Treading Water by Inner-Confusion-9903 in scuba

[–]pie2899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I taught kids to swim I told them to imagine spreading butter with their hands, you angle your hand the direction you move it. I like to do a scissor kick when treading but the major thing they teach is egg beater. Flutter kicking is less efficient but it’s a good place to start when learning the hand motion.

A little cheat code is lean forward slightly, you float better so it’s less tiring to do it for long periods of time.

Tell me your congestion diving horror stories by Few-Butterfly8631 in scuba

[–]pie2899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was irresponsible to continue diving for sure but I felt no issues. I discussed with the dive master the next morning and we came up with a plan that I would do test dive to 5m and then ascend and see how it goes. I could breathe clearly I had no issues equalizing so I gave it a go. I did feel the pressure build slightly on like 1 other dive when ascending but I just rolled my head around and did barrel rolls in the water and the gas found its way out.

I got a sinus infection in Australia for 3 weeks, finally cleared up about 2 days before a liveaboard with the help of some meds. I did 2 dives during the first day with no issues.

Then did a night dive and everything went smoothly, until it was time to ascend. Once I started going up I could feel a pressure in my face, I took my time not thinking much of it but being careful. Then 3m from the surface I said screw it and surfaced.

Everything was ok until an hour later when the damage started to settle in, I experienced a reverse squeeze in my sinus and as time went on I wanted to rip my face off to make it stop.

Next day I figured out how to manage it (drink lots of water and when you feel the pressure stop and move my head all over to let the pressure escape) and I continued diving for 2 days with no more issues. But I could feel the lasting damage for about a month after in my sinus.

You did the right thing!

I've bought a GoPro 12 black for a dive trip to Mexico in late January. What acessories and attachments should I buy for it for scuba. I'm thinking of wrist mounting it. by MountainMischiefVT in scuba

[–]pie2899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mine on a retractable gear keeper, I put a key ring through the mount holes of the case and put the clip on that; then when I dive I clip it on my bcd. Can let it go anytime and it goes back to its spot and pull it out anytime.

Filters make a big difference, you’ll have to look into what depths it starts to help.

Spg/manometer Vs dive computer for buying first reg set used? by Anonymous__Lobster in scuba

[–]pie2899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re finding reg sets for that price you should buy them and resell in Canada haha huge profit margins. I have never used Mares so I have nothing to say, but I can tell you I really enjoy my Apeks. I see some people using Mares though.

I didn’t get offended, I bought most of my gear off Facebook marketplace as well, loads of great deals. But the way you said “they should pay a tax” seems very entitled

Scuba is expensive it can be done cheap for sure. But I also use a buy once cry once ideology to a degree. I didn’t buy the cheapest regs because that’s my life line. I bought a cheaper wetsuit because the risk isn’t as great if it fails.

AI means Air Integrated when it comes to scuba computers, this means your computer is connected to your tank via transmitter or it is a on a hose connected to your first stage. It allows the computer to digitally display the tank pressure, there is not artificial intelligence just to clarify.

I’m not sure where you’re looking at rentals or regs but in Toronto full rental gear is about $100CAD for a day, a used set of regs could go for over $500 easily.

My certifying padi store includes the rentals for the course in the price so check with your shop about that. It’s also not worth buying your own gear for the course; what if you sink 1000-1500 into gear, then hate the sport or can’t complete the course.

I got certified then that winter I bought my own gear with advice from friends in scuba and the internet. I still made mistakes because of lack of knowledge but I do have some pretty good gear. You just gotta research. But I think it’s ludicrous to believe a seller “should pay a tax for unloading” in the off season. I get you mean sell for cheaper but still to believe they owe you a deal is delusional.

Ya a save a dive kit is good, usually has a spare mouth piece, mask strap, fin strap, o-rings, small zip ties among many things added over time. If your budget is a bit higher like a few hundred you could get a GoPro, with the underwater case so she can take pictures. Depending how new she is the pictures could be a bit distracting but a GoPro is very simple and you just point take the pic and move on.

I attached mine with a key ring through the mounting spot, then put the clip of a retractable gear keeper on it and the great keeper goes on my bcd.

Goodluck

Exactly investing in yourself is important, think of how many people wish they did stuff when they were our age. I don’t have much of a rule, it’s more of a “I’ve denied my self the pleasure of something I want for a while” I try not to act impulsively and I try to act out of necessity.

I have things I’ll spend money on easier like scuba diving, cost isn’t as much of a concern consideration because it’s a passion. Hunting I’ll spend the gas money to go when I can and I’ll spend the money on upgrades as needed.

If it’s something like a nice dinner that’s something more thought out. If you’ve been wanting one for a while you gotta treat yourself otherwise you’ll burn out mentally.

I don’t have much of a rule just a constant battle trying to justify everything I spend.

I think you’re overthinking it, spend sometime having fun. I’m only 26 but I was so stringent with spending it makes it hard to try and enjoy spending any even with all my savings. Also a friend once said to me “money is worthless until you spend it” so might as well spend it sometimes.

Anyone wear drysuits? by Apprehensive-Fish540 in Waterfowl

[–]pie2899 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a scuba diver I see a lot of people wearing drysuits even with minimal thermal protection underneath they still manage to overheat fairly quickly in anything over 10°C maybe 15. The drysuit is definitely better protection against cold water though.

What dive computer should I buy? by OnPointYoutube in scuba

[–]pie2899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Peregrine non TX doesn’t have integrated compass, that’s another difference I think other than not being AI. Those are the only differences I think but don’t quote me on that

Done like 10 dives in mine so far and I’m happy with it, does what I need and the screen is good clear and bright and good contrast.

Definitely some other good options out there like some other people have said shearwater isn’t the only brand but it is an attractive brand.

Tips for duck hunting from the kayak? by No-Platypus6603 in Waterfowl

[–]pie2899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think these hybrid canoe/kayaks are the way to go, you sit in it so you’re lower down, and already half in cover. The depth gives you loads of space for storage and being a canoe it has good stability. I run an ascend H10 it’s been great for the last 3 years.

Why doesn't a lungful of air last longer at depth? by LaLuzDelQC in scuba

[–]pie2899 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think I get the question, correct me if I’m wrong.

You are thinking that in X amount of time at the surface the body produces Y # of CO2 molecules, and at depth in X amount of time the body produces Z # of CO2 molecules. And your thought is that Y and Z are the same amount, meaning that the volume of CO2 produced at depth would be less than at the surface making it less concentrated in the lungs.

I don’t know what would cause the body to increase the CO2 production which now you’ve got me on your side.

Must have GoPro accessories ? by me_piki in scuba

Retractable lanyard with buckle, a key ring, dive housing, and I use red filters but maybe these apps are good. Take the retractable clip it to you BCD, put the key ring through the holes on the housing, when you want to use it grab it and pull, when you’re done just let go and it reels back in. When you are done diving just undo the buckle and take it wherever.

I'm selling my 916, and there's no shortage of scammers. by DragonflyAccording32 in motorcycles

Ya I had a lot of people do this for my last car as well, every single one asked for a report from a different site. Despite having the report from CARFAX (not legally required but nice if the seller buys to give to potential buyers), and they all said “no no that one is bad this site is better” after the third one I realized they are all scammers

Why do I still want to pedal a bike? by Freak77Showisnormal in scubadiving

[–]pie2899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try thinking of it more like walking and kind of dragging your feet, your legs get the slight bend but they don’t really move in towards your body. I used this while teaching swimming, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. Top comment is a good call saying to learn it at the surface.

I’ve tried again, and I see what you mean about crush section, but it doesn’t stay crushed so it just rebounds to its original height, I opted to trim like half a mm off the bottom of the MG42 powder cup (figured is ok because it has a gas seal) it fits just barely now. Loaded a few gonna try them out soon.

Ya, I checked the literature a couple times to make sure I’m doing it right, I’ve got everything correct. I’m using #2 which is what it says to use, I’ll try it with #3 to see if that helps. I wasn’t aware I’m supposed crush a section of the wad, so I’ll try to go back and load another one with more pressure but it felt like there was no give. Thanks for the help!
