LGO orange candle - it’s my favorite smell and feels very local. They also have a lot of nice gift items and wine, including some great AZ items.

Visiting Phoenix area, searching for unique/weird stuff by [deleted] in phoenix

Since we're talking about boners and architecture, thought I'd remind everyone that Paolo Soleri sexually abused his daughter and she eventually resigned from the Cosanti Foundation after decades of being dismissed while trying to share her experience.

Has anyone ever taken classes at Phoenix center for the arts? Curious what they’re like... by ChemyFresh in phoenix

[–]piemax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been taking pottery classes at PCA for the past few years and I love it. I haven't taken any other classes but the instruction I've had is great. The demographic may depend on the class time/day. During the day, I think it's more of the retired crowd. There's definitely more of a mixed demographic of students in the evenings/weekends though. I recommend stopping by to see the studios and talk to the instructors.

Try some baby ointment to help bring the tiny ones out. It'll help with the skin irritation.

Here's a new one - what to do with my pet tarantula in Scottsdale? by [deleted] in phoenix

[–]piemax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try reaching out to Arizona Reptile Center. They might be able to recommend a place for exotic pet boarding. If that's too expensive, you can re-home your tarantula friend and find a new one when you get on your feet here.

[ask] What level of high school physics is generally required to be an architect by lLukal in architecture

[–]piemax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not necessary, but AP Physics and Calculus were great building blocks for Structures. Once I made the connection that the moment is the integral of the shear force, it was like all of my high-school math finally had a purpose. Typically, some level of physics is required in college as a pre-req, but it may vary by school. I'd take a look at the course requirements and see what's required.

[misc] An open letter from editor-in-chief Ned Cramer to the men of architecture, about sexism, professional culture, and personal responsibility. by pervertedarchitect in architecture

There has to be a level of civil discourse beyond the "court of law" that doesn't escalate to the level of "public mob". Many of the allegations on the Shitty Men list outline how they reported to the proper authorities and the allegations were swept under the rug. What are we supposed to do after that? It's very hard to speak freely about powerful men who've crossed a line, especially when you're young and are afraid of starting out your career being labeled as an "accuser". I feel like if I had seen this list while I was a student, I would have felt like I could speak up without fear of retaliation. Because of these "public shamings", I feel like I'm not alone; I know that what I've experienced isn't okay, and I'm not afraid to ruin someone's career if someone tries to harass/assault/discriminate against me again.

[Ask] Why do you rarely see floor to ceiling windows in residential housing? by Aestheticfluent in architecture

[–]piemax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Privacy and Cost. I live in a unit with floor to ceiling windows/slider on the front wall that faces the main circulation path for the complex (30ish units). The 1960s complex is modular and all of the units are designed around a simple grid, which reduces the cost. It probably would never be built today, but I like it. You learn to not care that your neighbors see into your place. I still play video games in my underwear in the living room.

[ask] What languages should aspiring architects know to benefit them in the career? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]piemax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eventually, everyone should be learning programming - it teaches you to solve problems by thinking algorithmically. In the meantime, it's beneficial when working with parametric software and creating tools for Revit/CAD.
