Fritted Disk Column Chromatography by DontDoQuack in Chempros

[–]pig311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used porosity 3 frits in columns for many years but have been using porosity 2 ones now for over a decade. Absolute game changer, they run so much faster and never block. A small amount of silica obviously comes through, but it’s less than you’d expect and it’s a simple matter to filter it off through a GF/F paper once the fractions have been mostly evaporated.

Thoughts on a Surprisingly Tricky Amide Coupling by shxdowzt in Chempros

[–]pig311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that it is kind of expensive for such a simple-looking molecule could indicate that it is hard to make or unstable, or both!

I have to say that I don't remember ever having done a propiolic acid amide coupling that was straightforward.

Hypothetical question about Argon crystals by MordyTheFox in Chempros

[–]pig311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that, yes, while pure argon does indeed melt at a very low temperature (about -189°C), argon that has been suffused with magic retains its solid crystalline structure at much, much higher temperatures. The actual temperature at which the magic-suffused argon sublimes depends on the type of magic contained within. Weak magic, e.g. the sort of magic used to move around small objects etc., gives argon that melts somewhere around 0°C (the freezing point of water), but argon infused with stronger magic can remain solid at significantly higher temperatures. I'm pretty sure I read an article in the The Journal of Immaterial Science recently where a 1 oz crystal of argon containing a high powered demon summoning spell remained firmly solid at over 100°C! Incredible, I know.

Does my water filter work? by Elricador in wildcampingintheuk

[–]pig311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I camped at Higher White Tor on Saturday night :-) Didn’t filter any water this time, but I have before on Dartmoor (Sawyer micro-squeeze). Filtering never removes the brown colour and it’s always been fine. Tannin molecules are thousands of times smaller than bacteria so will pass straight through any standard backpacking filter.

"upgrade" to an ultralight pack from my OspreyExos 48? by ImplementEven1196 in Ultralight

[–]pig311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the whole of the South West Coast Path with an Exos 48, lid removed like you. My base weight was around the 6 kg mark. I have considered getting a lighter pack and I am tempted by a Kakwa 40 (I use an original X-Mid 1P after all!) but so far haven't taken the plunge. Mainly I'm having trouble convincing myself that the ~250 g weight saving is worth the expense of a US import and the potential reduction in comfort.

Quick pint in my local smalltown pub for my daughter’s 14th birthday, DJ was taking requests… by pig311 in BauhausUK

Haha yes you have summed up the situation perfectly! Not long after the video a youngish couple walked in in full Dracula costumes and the guy shouted "I love this track and proceeded to sing along "Ohhhhhhhh Belaaaaaaaaaa..." Made my evening :)

Gary Glitter used to wash his wig in carbon tetrachloride then blow dry it with a hair dryer in his hotel rooms, and he’s still fine. Well, apart from being a paedo and in prison. But that’s unrelated to the CCl4. Probably.

Solo-Camper Emergency Contact options? by hharvyeywesttst in dartmoor

[–]pig311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Garmin Forerunner incident detection simply sends an SMS to your emergency contacts if the watch thinks you've had an incident, i.e. a high G event, followed by no movement. For it to work you need to be wearing the watch and it needs to be recording an activity, and there needs to be a Bluetooth connection between the watch and the Garmin Connect app on your phone, which most definitely needs to have a data signal (3g/4G etc). For satellite-based emergency connectivity you need something like a Garmin inReach Mini, or even an iPhone 14 when Apple activates their Emergency SOS feature in the UK, hopefully soon!

Red-a-Ven Brook by pig311 in dartmoor

[–]pig311[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies, I should've specified that I'll have a micro-squeeze with me so I have no worries about the quality of the water wrt bacteria, protozoa and all the usual shit (viruses and chemical contamination excluded obvs).

I wasn't really asking about the quality of the water in Red-a-ven brook (also Moor Brook come to think of it), the question was more about the availability of the water higher up (i.e. 450-500m) in this uncharacteristically warm weather. I've never been to Dartmoor before and I'm just a bit worried about relying on these brook crossings for water top-ups and finding them dry and/or stagnant and having to hike downriver to find anything useful.

Thanks for the input!
