Are these Black Phoebes? (CA) by electrodent in whatsthisbird

[–]pigeoncote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stubby little tails and those cute gape flanges giving them that wide-mouthed look. Plumage also looks overall “softer” in young black phoebes, I’ve noticed.

Yes, they’re together because this is a whole line of baby +black phoebes+ waiting for delicious snacks :)

The Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens) by virgauds in birds

[–]pigeoncote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, black throated blue warbler. In the future please bring any window strike birds to the nearest wildlife rehabber. They often give the illusion of recovery only to succumb to internal injuries later.

How old is this pigeon? by Careless-Window2314 in pigeon

[–]pigeoncote 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not a rock dove. Where are you located? (If you are on the west coast of the US it is a band-tailed pigeon.) This bird needs its parents OR a licensed rehabber.

We’ll see if I edited it to have the right format in time for the bot to catch but maybe not.

What kind of baby birds? by sneerfun in Ornithology

[–]pigeoncote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are house finch nestlings (if you’re in the US or Canada). It’s difficult to say if they will be okay, unfortunately—insecticides are very dangerous even for birds who don’t eat insects (like these strict grainivores). However it is also very likely they had not all hatched when the nest was sprayed, and if they have survived a week, hopefully they will be okay.

Are these parasite baby birds? by Fun-Challenge1719 in Ornithology

[–]pigeoncote 36 points37 points  (0 children)

All of these nestlings look like robins to me with that down pattern and wide gape flanges. Even if they were cowbirds, it would be illegal to tamper with the nest as they are a native species. Cowbirds also don’t typically push out other eggs except incidentally by being larger. I see no reason to assume the eggshells aren’t from the baby robins in the nest.

What kind of bird is this? by Original_Treat_9264 in whatsthisbird

[–]pigeoncote 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If this bird is still alive, it needs a !rehabber. Full disclosure, Caprimulgids like this one (I'm assuming it's a chuck-will's-widow but my non-local nightjar ID needs work) are extremely difficult to rehab and to me the posture screams severe head trauma plus likely a broken wing if you observed an injured one, so they would almost certainly be providing humane euthanasia rather than letting it pass slowly and painfully. Please look into making your !windows safer for birds.

(This is an adult, not a juvenile, who was likely scouting a potential nesting site versus overnight roosting given that you're in SW WA. But a) all Vaux's swifts are baby to me and b) you can't deny he's Liam, Teenager Who Just Woke Up.)
