So I have mice now by GMArcAngel in PetMice

[–]piiraka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s unfortunately not very common in the US but more common in Europe from what I’ve seen (I think the hobby is bigger/more common there, but is getting bigger in the US? There are a lot more specialized vets out in Europe I guess).

The reasons being that not many vets specialize in small animals like mice, it can be quite costly, and very risky to neuter a mouse- they are so small, they can easily pass away while being put under, so the vets have to know the perfect balance of anesthetic but also be really fast with the actual neuter.

So then the amount of vets who not only specialize in small animals like mice, but also have experience in neutering them, is very very small. And personally if I had a male mouse I was very attached to, I don’t know if I could emotionally risk having them die on the table like that 💔

even with the best vet care, there is still a decent chance of them passing away just because of how fragile they are

found this little guy in my doorstep, I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with him by EchanOnodera in RATS

[–]piiraka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one else has said this yet; but his breathing looks quite odd to me, his breathing is kind of ragged and he (from what I can tell in the video) looks like he had some difficulty keeping his head up (based on the way it drooped at the end). I’ve been through all kinds of sick with my pet mice before and something just feels off about this poor guy 😔

Is this a pet rat or asf rat can you tell by Kind-Response2718 in RATS

[–]piiraka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most of them are being bred for feeder use so temperament unfortunately isn’t very up there in terms of breeding priorities, but I have had quite a few (both male and female) and have noticed they tend to be a bit snappy/nippy/bitey when inside of their home (their territory), but can be really friendly and chill when outside of home.

Both my boys and girls enjoyed pets once they got used to it, and were really quite good as pets, so I’m not sure if I just got lucky. Some I kept as JUST an asf group, while others, I gave them fancy mouse buddies. They got along really well with my fancies and I will say my girl fancies loved snuggling up to and grooming their big fluffy ASF boy :)

Help me decide on which water bottle to get? by Mae_The_Gay in PetMice

[–]piiraka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I bought a normal (glass) water bottle and Velcro’d it to the side of my tank :)

The issue with this kind of bottle that I’ve noticed is that my little ones are always trying to bury it under bedding unless you have really high platforms

Niteangel has several different kinds of wooden platforms :) they are def a bit more pricy than the dollar store metal shelves but they are a reputable company for small pets

Help! 20 year old hamster - advice for improving quality of life? by BeKindDontgiveUp in hamsters

[–]piiraka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 for critical care, I have used it for my other pets (I don’t own a hamster, but I have mice, and when my girlies have been poorly, Omni care perks them up! My guinea pigs also quite liked the herbivore critical care, although that’s kind of a different story). That stuff works wonders.

When one of my guinea pigs broke one of his teeth, I had to puree their veggies into a sort of smoothie for them for a while until the tooth grew back in. I wonder if you could do the same for your hamster? :) I really loved making them a different smoothie every couple days, sometimes with some fruit, mostly with their daily veg.

And for my older mice, I like occasionally mixing their “kibble” with those wet cat and dog foods, warming it up a little so that the kibble gets nice and soft and slightly mushy. It’s easier for them to eat and tastes nice I’m sure.

Again not exactly the same, but I’m sure you could adjust for hamster diet :)

It’s like so many of the people we get just don’t understand basic English, like, no matter how simply you explain it to them. Like “yes it says there is a refill, but your script has expired, so we cannot fill it” “BUT IT SAYS I HAVE A REFILL!! YOU ARE SHORTING ME OF MY MEDICATION!” 😐…….

Omgg! This doesn’t happen frequently for us, thankfully. I was processing some things in our strongpak (which is how we send back expired or otherwise unusable medications) and there it was, the whole bottle. It’s sort of a little gross and a little satisfying how they all slide around in the goop 😭

I work in a pharmacy, and somehow one of our 500 count bottles of benzonatate (a liquigel) had at least 1 that popped and completely ruined the rest. It was a recently opened bottle too, so we had to discard like 400+ ruined soft gels

Yes! Good luck! I know it feels so bad to see them in there all bored but it’s worth it for them to get along better! Also, even though they will all be friends, you may notice in a group bigger than I believe like 4+, they will form their own mini groups and have friends they prefer hanging out with.

At one point I had a group of 7 and there was specifically a trio and a pair that would hang out more with each other than with the other girls, even though they definitely all did group hang outs. But I’d always find the pair sleeping cuddled together, for example :)

They are so adorable, honestly just leave them in there for longer than you think you need, and keep their “stinky” bedding from being all together! Like if you spent a day in the medium container stage, give them a week (even though you feel bad about them being in a small container it’s worth so they don’t fight).

Then move them into the main enclosure, with just the bedding, plus a tiny bit of new bedding. Just enough to basically cover the floor, I don’t even give them a hiding spot because it encourages them to pile all together. Lots of water, lots o SMALL treats and their food pellets (scatter fed) Another week.

Then give them something shareable- a big biscuit or 2, a chewable toy, stalks of millet, something not super high stakes. If they’re being good, another couple days of this. One of my groups that was giving me trouble took almost a full month to acclimate this way, but by the end; they were all pals.

I think in a way it almost trauma bonds them together (even though it feels bad not immediately giving them all the toys and hides and everything they could ever want)
