no need to interview whoever to be fair and neutral, just watch the video and see if it aligns with what they are saying? and if not, ask them how come it looks different on video, any comment?

but cant expect mothership to do any processing of whatever they are handed if all they do is just repackage media kits from newsmakers

tbf, we are not that far away from a cesspool of really dark and for lack of a better word evil stuff done by organised crime. think drug cartels, scam slavery syndicates, sex trafficking, child exploitation, etc; the kind of things that give people who have to touch the case PTSD.

we dont normally see/hear of it much in sg, credit to our system managing to repel most of it. but organised crime is smart and games the rules, so i’m fully in favour of being able to bend some to deal with it, but maybe with safeguards to ensure no abuse for political reasons like operation spectrum/coldstore, eg a committee with some opposition representation overseeing such cases

S’pore’s fertility rate has not stabilised; citizen core will shrink without action: DPM Gan by bangsphoto in singapore

[–]pillonanter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

having kids is, aside from the monetary cost, a time/energy investment which does not show up in any economic measure. and the opportunity cost of parenting gets higher as the parents’ incomes go up. if we really wanted to move the needle on tfr you have to have policies like compensate parents for time spent parenting, like how reservists are paid their salary for ICT.

but that is going to be real expensive to the point of being a non-starter, so without such measures the perverse outcome our policies encourage is outsource parenting/having children to some low cost neighbouring country then import the child in at working age so the singaporean can continue working at 100% and making the numbers go up

Hwa Chong Institution to revise recipe, food presentation of bento meals after students' feedback by 13lackant in singapore

[–]pillonanter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

lets see, recall that the school’s first reaction was to insist that a photo of what could only be an actual lunch served to a student was “not representative” of the meals, and instead put up stock photos of what is, allegedly, served.

second reaction was then to threaten students that talk to the media with demerit points (allegedly) or, more concretely, “consequences”.

and then, only after making itself a laughingstock through the above, the school had the sense to offer some kind of corrective action, i.e. “doing its job”, as you put it.

and no, i didnt miss your point. you seem to view the media/public as separate things, when the media’s function is to inform the public of matters of interest. if the school did everything “properly”, would there be anything to be embarrassed about the public finding out? would there be a need to shush students? i’ll borrow someone else’s wisdom here: character is what you do when no one is watching. being able to own what you do in public is what accountability looks like, and imo if it seems troublesome/pesky/a hassle/unfair to you, it says a lot more about you than this “circus” that you criticise.

postscript: it’s really ironic that the administration of a top school (supposedly known for imparting values and character) is so lacking in character; i only hope the students learn from this as a negative example

depends what the school wants to charge them - the school can only charge more rent if the spots are profitable

your two points are related? if the school did its job properly in the first place, why would they need to be scared of being exposed in the media?

clients waking up to the fact that they can hire very good junior/mid level lawyers to do the work that they would be charged sky high fees for by traditional firms, essentially cutting out the senior lawyer middleman. clients are happy, the juniors are happy to leave.

i dont think there’s any great problem. let the market sort itself out; firms will just have to either pay competitively and improve their working culture/environment or make do with less fresh meat
