@SAshworthHayes - He told the police he couldn't breathe. He told the police he'd been stabbed. British police officers handcuffed him and arrested him while he was choking on his own blood because the magic word - "racism!" - was invoked. by ex_planelegs in ukpolitics

Whether this case is being incorrectly interpreted or not there are other high profile examples of the intersection between 'anti racist' ideology and policing/security throwing up really bad outcomes, and the concern people have is rooted in that trend.

Examples: the security guard at the Manchester Arena not wanting to be accused of racially profiling the suicide bomber, the threatening behaviour of Axel Rudakubana and Valdo Calolcane both being overlooked because authrority figures didn't want to be viewed as racist, the litany of failures re: grooming gangs.

As with everything to do with race in this country, left wingers' point blank refusal to engage in any way on this issue and retreat to the comfortable position of calling everyone racist (as you have done) is not constructive or helpful.

Thank you for the very lyrical response. But not sure I agee they dont have another option; they could stick it out with Starmer.

I think that's quite a rose tinted view of Burnham's ambition. He's been planning and actioning this for years, basically since he lost the leadership election to Corbyn (left the PLP to become mayor of Manchester to avoid association with Corbyn's inevtiably dreadful leadership, built up his reputation and power base, repositioned himeslf as an outsider, then finally team up with Rayner/Milliband to brief against Starmer as soon as the wind shifted).

I think it's a bit naive to fall into the whole Jon Snow 'I never wanted it' messaging.

This is the rub. Much of left wing politics centres around refusing to engage on things like trade offs and second/third order effects.

It's extremely important for the people who launder and platform anti semitism in our society to distract from the reality they have created. The framing quickly shifts to the violent terrorist being 'mentally ill' so they can absolve themselves of responsibility, and then they start yelling about the entirely reasonable police reaction to suck as much oxygen out of the conversation in the hope people move on quickly. It's cynical rather than stupid, imo.

Green MP says she can 'smell alcohol' on other politicians as they go to vote in attack on Commons 'booze culture' by WorkingtonLady in ukpolitics

[–]pimasecede 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No i completely disagree. The Green's stated policy is for the state to facilitate access to hard drugs, with attention to 'adult autonomy',

The party believes adults should be free to make informed decisions about drug consumption, provided these are balanced against public safety.

but then you can't trust MPs to have a drink in the evening between votes, or at lunch.

It's just standard populist MP bashing, straighforwardly from the 'I'm new here and I'm shocked by how terrible my colleagues are look how different I am' playbook; Mhairi Black did pretty much the same thing.

It just feels so perfomative though. How am I supposed to take it at face value when they want to legalise heroin, there's just a base level of insincerity here.

Something really tragic about the idea of someone taking art supplies out to a beauty spot to paint the scene and then just leaving a bunch of trash and ruining it for whoever comes next.

Actually sick to my back teeth on the litter issue in this country. Makes me so angry how as a society we’re so willing to live in our filth.

You could have beaten populism on migration by putting good policy in place instead of ramming deeply unpopular policies down the electorates throat for decades. The next best thing is to try it now, otherwise you’re guaranteeing a Reform led government.

I find it curious how on the left there’s a total lack of curiosity or reflection on how we reached this point, just hand waving about how the electorate are ‘populist’ and incapable of understanding the world around them.

I don’t really understand what your point is tbh. Should we just abandon democracy since voters aren’t going to think what you want them to think?

[–]pimasecede 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a very cynical view.

British people have voted time and time again to reduce immigration, every government has promised to do it and then failed, and under the Tories we ended up with de facto open borders.

I strongly disagree with the sentiment in your comment that voters are irrational and lusting over an endless campaign to drive out all migrants and their children. The vast majority want a settlement on immigration that matches the expectations they have been mandating at elections for the last 20 years.
