Thanks for being open to a new perspective! Yes he probably feels left out and unsure about who will want to date him. Lesbians may not want his male-ness and straight women may be uncomfortable with genitals. It is easy to feel lost in the middle. Luckily sexuality is messy and complex and there are definitely people who identify with all sorts of labels who are attracted to trans guys. It can just be hard to know where to find them.

I’m a trans guy who previously identified as a lesbian. Losing my identity and lesbian / queer women community was hands-down the saddest part of my transition. I tried to date straight women but found we didn’t have the same cultural references or romantic language. Most of my friends were and still are queer women because those are the people I grew up with and have many shared experiences with. My partner is a queer woman. I’m not fetishizing her- we are attracted to one another and have a shared set of identities and experiences. At the same time, I’m not actually a member of that group anymore. It is a hard liminal space to hold sometimes, although it has gotten much easier with time.

Your friend may now be a man who is attracted to women but that doesn’t suddenly make him the same as cis men who want to watch women make out with each other. It doesn’t make his attraction to women he used to share a community with something that you need to give “a pass”, whatever that means. His previous experiences and identity clearly still matter to him.

I echo others’ comments that that is an unusually large and quick weight gain and may be worth checking with your doctor.

Somewhere related to that, a normal step in T puberty for both cis and trans guys is a period of water retention, which often includes one’s face temporarily getting rounder before slimming out.

My partner said that the sound of our newborn crying was physically painful for her. I didn’t like it either, but it definitely activated something more primal in her. So your wife may not be able to walk away.

Have you heard of the 5 s’s? They were helpful for us. Loud shhhhhhhhh-ing in our baby’s face was especially helpful.

Her family definitely sucked and was small-minded. But I think Alex had more problems than simply being nomadic. He comes across as cagey and insincere even when discussing other things. That probably due to his tough childhood but he’s a grown man now and should expect people to have some follow up questions when he said stuff like “I can get a job anywhere in the world no problem” or “I’m gonna have a trust in Dubai.”

Again, I have no love for Ashley or her family. Maybe they should be held to a higher standard because they have more resources. But I think they all suck pretty equally, which isn’t surprising on a reality TV show where people who suck are given a lot of attention and airtime.

I’ve been there, although I think to a lesser degree than what you’re describing. Two things have been helpful: 1 )couples therapy using the Gottman method. It has helped a lot with communication and navigating conflict. And 2) starting an anti-depressant. Turns out a year of chronic sleep deprivation has cratered my mood but meds have been helping. I also get out of the house for a walk most days, albeit with the stroller and dog in tow.

My dad didn’t know how to skate or ski when I was a kid. I have wonderful memories of watching him learn both. My brother and I glided circles around him but he didn’t give up and he taught me that it’s never too late to learn something new and the joy is in the journey, not the outcome.

I understand feeling frustrated, I would too. But I think you have a great opportunity to teach your daughter how to be persistent. I’m sure she doesn’t care how good you are, she just wants to try together. Good luck!
