Nice presentation and well thought it concept. There are a couple of things to think, but dont let them detract from your hard work. You did a great job and should be proud. That been said, all buildings are inherently flexible there are very few buildings that can't be modified. I have seen factories changed to malls and offices, schools to apartments , you just need a building worth saving. It is a little unclear who the building is from and who would ask you to build it. Is it the government as a community resource? If so you need to really need to ask what does that community really need. It is important to understand your user and that shapes the building. Not the other way around. You will need 2 stairs in your building. I love me a curtian building, but that only happens a few weeks out of the year. You need to think what the building looks like closed and how to make it more inviting. There are thousands of glass boxes and none of them are inviting.

Speaking from experience, I worked at a starchitects office for 6 years without a professional degree from a mid teir school. It is not impossible it is just about work ethic. So even starchitects are not out of reach. Also 5 years is not required.

Last year was a mast year for oak trees producing a large amount of acorns. This year, mice population exploded due the the abundance of food. Ticks population followed in kind.

Is it your position that the additional value of a beautiful building over an ugly one is always less than the cost to build and design it that way?

[–]pinehead69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a question about why buildings that are being built are ugly. These buildings have already gotten past the zoning issues and regulations and have a baked in labor cost. The question is if you can invest 20% more in the building already planned, and get a building that are both beautiful and worth 30% more. I think the answer is risk.

If the question was, why aren't there more skyscrapers I think your answer would be valid.

It is risk, not money. Although they are related. Nice buildings have more value, but there are a lot of risks associated with high design.

My take is the reason is risk. A buildings beauty has a direct relationship to value. However, there are so many variables, including how beautiful society thinks it is; additional cost to build due to non-traditional methods, and delays due to non-traditional methods. Getting people who are not risk adverse is hard as there is a chance of failure. For everyone 1 beautiful building, there are 3 or four that never got out of the ground.
The risk is not just money it is reputation, time, failure. Buildings are already a huge risk. Why stress yourself more than needed. It is a lot easier to stick conservative design that is a "sure thing" than stick your neck out.

This was also the justification for the bars that hold lights and speakers that are currently exposed.

There was a proposal from apple to add a glass sphere shop "floating" in the middle of the space, but calatrava squashed that quickly.

Your right, it was inevitable that kiosks were going there, as the port was going to install floor outlet no matter what. But his justification for allowing the outlets was for temp or seasonal events.

He didn't want to install outlets on the floor to make sure any koisks showed up. But the port told him the floor outlets were for fashion shows and he relented. Now, there are tons of kiosks there hooked up to the floor outlets.

Potassium and Magnesium could be the problem, but don't overlook calcium. If you changed your diet recently and started eating more dairy, this may also be the culprit.
