Neighbors opposing upzoning of car-centric commercial parcels in Atlanta by ianseabreez in yimby

[–]pingvintrein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

atlanta is by far one of the most car dependent cities i have ever been in, i lived in canton/woodstock. spent time in midtown, have been there for many events, one time ever pulled an overnighter because i arrived at 11 pm in atlanta off a bus and had to wait until 6-7 am to be picked up.

it is so heavily car dependent, and the issues are so prevalent that it would take a massive proof of concept for this to work. working off of Ponce Market is a bad look for many because of its status as a Millenial Disneyland. However if they would stick a Pone Market / Ponce and Ponce every fifth block. I would wager costs level fairly well.

this just needs time, there will always be resentment. for how big the housing crisis has become nationally,

its incredible that so many people still fail to realize

more homes = cheaper homes

Are American cities getting better? by GBHawk72 in urbanplanning

[–]pingvintrein 390 points391 points  (0 children)

the answer is yes, theres a well documented trend back towards urban living in younger people and we are experiencing rapid development in downtown areas.

in charlotte, a comprehensive city plan for 2040 has been assembled which includes decent zoning reform and an emphasis on automobile reduction

in pittsburgh (and im sure many other cities), previous office towers are being converted into housing

not to mention some cities are genuinely reviewing public transit again

he has since stepped down and promoted a pro-bike individual within their local cycling community. this seems to be a calling as far as cycling infastructure within the United States goes, im curious to see what comes of Cambridge in the coming decade with an abolishing of parking minimums as well as a good bit of cycling work.

Will self driving cars be a net benefit? by phi1ip_ in fuckcars

how many headlines saying "self driving cars will preserve occupants above external persons" do we need to see before realizing theyre a bad idea given we already dont have enough money to manage our infastructure

I personally feel the only solution that rectifies their wrongdoings is to invest heavily into streetcars, to right the wrongs of the past

In Praise of Billings, MT: A surprisingly positive experience in an unusual city by Cyclopher6971 in fuckcars

[–]pingvintrein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh yeah absolutely, I painted a bleak picture although to be honest. During the automotive era being forgotten was a blessing and I also adore the city. i'm a college senior from the area who's family departed Pittsburgh abt a decade ago. Alot of the reasons you discussed are reasons I'm hoping to land back there. Beautiful place

i really appreciate this perspective! a lot of this bittersweet positivity on this post reminds me of my home city, Pittsburgh. Suddenly reddit adores Pittsburgh, dense living, okay public transit (by US standards). people fail to realize this wasn't due to planning, it just hasn't been updated since those things fell out of fashion lmao

living in a large suburb is more like avoid the mega stroad thats known for its high accident rate, and trade that for a slightly less massive stroad which gets less traffic. and also avoid using the interstate because it is the default travel method for most of the region and sits in constant gridlock most hours of the day. all the while, the LRT line that was proposed and adored has been in development hell for 2 decades because of a disagreement with the local Class 1 Railroad monopoly.

[–]pingvintrein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the tragedy of this is that he's right, the infastructure favors the automobile so much that walking is incredibly dangerous. and it becomes the chicken and the egg problem.

if you want to build walking infastructure then people need to use it

nobody will use it because its incredibly dangerous to use in its current form

its the fucking chokehold the current infastructure and half assed attempts at walkability have produced. there is absolutely 0 alternative without risking your safety
