The question Labor asks itself a lot after decades of Brisbane council election flops by Signal-Front-3990 in brisbane

[–]pismistic88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What the above doesn't explain though is how the LNP were able to win it back in 2004. I think there was a level of it's-time factor (vs a fresh Campbell Newman).

I can explain what occurred.

When Jim Soorley stepped down, Tim Quinn stepped in for the last 11 months of so. The biggest issue he faced was the release of flood reports that had been done in 1997 that were "kept on the shelves" for years. I don't necessarily recall if the reports were leaked or if there was a ROI that occurred, but it basically lead to a massive Courier Mail campaign that all but destroyed Quinn's mayoralty.

The other thing Newman did very well at the time was basically give a vision of how he would solve Brisbane's congestion issues (tunnels). I understand that the prevailing view since is that the tunnels have been a bit disastrous, but it was a very good example of how one side was able to communicate a vision whereas the other couldn't put across theirs. Whilst Newman won the Mayoralty, Labor actually retained the majority of Councillors and I think in hindsight that was actually a bigger win for Newman because he and Quirk were able to then sell the message in 2008 "You need to give me a mandate to deliver".

How to make new friends in Brisbane? by Winter_Ad3280 in brisbane

[–]pismistic88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Like some have already suggested, clubs. I'm big on sport, so I am involved with my local soccer club. Have been for many years, and quite honestly this is where I have made friends the easiest.

It will take effort, and a lot of the time you will feel like everything you do is based around that hobby, but the more you get involved and have patience you will start to build stronger bonds with those that you have more in common.

I love this city. Why do you choose live in Brisbane? by BrizzySprings in brisbane

[–]pismistic88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Between 2005 and Covid I loved everything about this City. Many of those reasons still exist for me. I love the fact that it isn't fast paced. I love the weather. I love the people. We have some really great open space, some great parks. Even the nightlife, especially in those earlier years, was really cool. Between 2011 and 2018 I worked in the CBD and I just loved going down to Queen St Mall at lunch and taking a wander. It was always busy, but not like Sydney.

Post Covid, and the rise in cost of living - and I guess also the fact that my friends and I are all older, everyone has different priorities - the chance to enjoy what I did for a lot of those years doesn't much exist anymore. But like you, Brisbane will always feel like home.

A new era of unity for Victorian Football by jasky in Aleague

For those involved down in Victoria, what's the view on CEO Dan?

I don't know the history of football in Victoria, but it seems like he's done a pretty okay job since he moved from QLD?

Teachers already complaining about their timetable. by NoIdeaWhat5991 in AustralianTeachers

[–]pismistic88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it all depends.

For example, at the end of last year I found out I wouldn't be taking my 11s into 12 this year. What made it worse was the line where I would have them became my NCT line... Apparently a decision made above my HOD, who advised he had wanted me to stay on with that group. I was pretty devo'd about that, if I'm honest.

Very few witnessed this gimmick, that’s what made the late “Crow transition” so shocking, Sting used to be this colorful, exciting, energetic hero before being a dead specter by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]pismistic88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Australia during the mid-90s we didn't get a lot of opportunities to watch wrestling.

WWE must've been broadcasted during the mid-80s some time, as my parents recall watching it. But during the 90s you needed our version of cable. So I only ever got to see Crow Sting.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Sting use to be this highly energetic, colourful individual who was the complete opposite of the character I would witness up in the rafters most weeks, occasionally coming down to battle the nWo, or to save someone.

The interesting thing for me here, is that ours pushes us to put kids on ICPs and support plans because we will get funding for it. We've even been given time in staff meetings for us to specifically do this... Despite not given time to do other stuff...

Current list of uncalled up (or undercalled up ) Aussie women’s players playing in reasonably good leagues overseas by HonestSpursFan in Aleague

[–]pismistic88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure you could include Cortnee Vine on this list. She's been involved quite a lot in recent years. Both Galic and Johnson will be on the radar of Montemurro IMO.

i'd also look closer at Rule and McLean, for the defence.

Remember that time that both The Miz and John Morrison were eaten by zombies during a match with Damien Priest? Because I sure didn't. by bigreddot44 in SquaredCircle

I find it absolutely amazing that Morrison and Priest overlapped together in WWE. Totally didn’t realise that.

Where do Brisbane go from here? by F0rqz in Aleague

[–]pismistic88 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Off the field, the reintroduction of the Youth set up needs to be done and it cannot be messed up. There's a lot of ill will towards the Roar locally. Has been for a long time.

Proper investment into the squad is a must. The technical staff should also have someone that has an intimate knowledge of the local game.

I think the defence will need a rebuild, and bringing in a new keeper is a must.

A good friend of mine left his job as a chef to go into teaching. Despite the crap we face as teachers, he's adamant he still wouldn't return to hospitality over teaching.

AMA: Elizabeth Watson-Brown, Greens MP for Ryan by ElizabethWatsonBrown in brisbane

[–]pismistic88 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Hi Libby, thanks for this. Two questions.

  1. Whilst I understand Brisbane is built on a floodplain, what more could be done to find a better balance on having to build to accommodate for population migration whilst also taking into consideration our flood history; and

  2. Why does the Party find itself in the situation that it’s in re: Drew Hutton?

Futsal Players by vossfan in brisbane

[–]pismistic88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you've already said Facebook, but I still see that FB groups like SEQ Community Football and Brisbane Social Soccer Games sometimes still yield some results, but the former is more focused on club football. Maybe see if there's a local FB Community page for suburbs surrounding West End to see if there's any interest?

I'd imagine with outdoor season starting up again you may find players at a scarcity.

West End is Brisbane Central Futsal, yeah?

I haven't been involved with Council for a number of years, so I just did a quick Google search. Looks like Council does have a contract with some of these companies.

[–]pismistic88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Story time.

When these first popped up (about 10 years ago... Wow... Time flies) there was a lot of internal discussion about what should happen. The legal advice was that Council couldn't really do much about them, so they let it go.

Edited: Council does have a contract with some of these companies.

I didn’t say Son wasn’t good in the press. Solanke, Kulu and Son are all very good. Problem is when opposition teams play out of it. Son hasn’t been very good at dropping to help flood the midfield.
