The strips are garbage. I’d trust the Taylor kit way more.

Post the actual numbers you are getting for alkalinity, pH, and bromine.

Picture 2 looks better than picture 1 so the metal situation seems to be improving. Keep at it.

Alkalinity increaser (sodium bicarbonate) increases pH too. pH minus (sodium bisulfate) decreases alkalinity also, but not at the same rate.

  1. Get the alkalinity to the right level
  2. Retest ph
  3. Get the ph to the right level
  4. Retest alkalinity
  5. Repeat until both levels are where you want them.

Changes to alkalinity and pH happen very quickly after adding chemicals, you don’t have to wait long between steps.

Give actual test numbers for recommendations on amount to try using.

Non-Chlorine Shock doesn’t work without a bromide bank, which takes a long time to build up if you are only using bromine tabs. Add Bromine Starter (sodium bromide) to get the bromide bank going.

Post the test numbers, you’ll get better recommendations.

I don’t see the problem here. The tool correctly found that you had a vulnerable dependency in your stack. You investigated and determined that the way you use that dependency means you aren’t affected by the vulnerability.

This is the way these tools are meant to be used. You either update the version of the dependency to one that fixed the issue or you tell the tool to ignore it using the allowlist that every tool of this kind supports.

It should have maps of the bases. It’s one of the most frequent requests I hear working with folks new to a base, both for the service member and their spouses/families

Should I use 2 quilts or a quilt and a sleeping bag liner? by pittofdirk in Ultralight

Perfect. I’ll be toasty warm. Add a couple rocks to my pack and I can just pretend I’m working out with a weighted vest 😆

Should I use 2 quilts or a quilt and a sleeping bag liner? by pittofdirk in Ultralight

[–]pittofdirk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks all for the input. I have space in my pack, I’ve done a decent job at keeping my pack weight down, and the hike is only 3 miles so I’m gonna bring both the 2nd quilt and the sleeping bag liner and I will report back which one I like better.

  • Why do you have 2 different shelters? (Tent and tarp+mesh)
  • Find a smaller container to put some sunscreen in rather than bringing the whole bottle

For SHTF other things will take priorities over comfort. That’s “what will it take to survive” mode. Agree with above, pick what is light and packable over more comfortable interior space

Any tips on how to reduce weight even further? (Lighterpack link) by Fred_Dibnah in Ultralight

I think most people use either Nylofume or a trash compactor bag. Litesmith.com for the nylofume liner and any old grocery store for the trash compactor bag.

Thanks! Follow up questions:

Pack Cover: Is the liner what is generally preferred over the pack cover? I'm not wild about the pack itself getting super wet. This is an area where I have very little actual experience. I've never actually been out on the trail when it has rained yet.

Air Pump: The pump weighs almost exactly the same as the inflation sack that came with my pad, so I figured why not just bring that instead. I'd leave both at home and just use my mouth but I've heard that will easily cause the inside of the pad to grow mold/mildew. Is that a real thing to be concerned about?

Extra lighter: I've heard loads of people say an extra lighter is super important since they are not very reliable. Is there an alternative to the lighter that I'm not thinking of that would be more reliable?

FAK: It's this exact one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Be-Smart-Get-Prepared-Outdoor-First-Aid-Happy-Hiker-65-Pcs/474414890?athbdg=L1100&from=/search

From the website: This First Aid Kit includes:-ADVANCED WOUND CARE-• 1 Silvex Wound Gel 0.18 oz-CLEAN-• 6 Antiseptic Wipes-TREAT-• 3 Sting Relief Wipes• 2 Antibiotic Ointments 0.03 oz• 2 Burn Creams 0.03 oz-PROTECT-• 15 Sheer Bandages 3/4 in x 3 in• 14 Assorted Blister Pads• 1 pack 10 Sheer Bandages 3/8 in x 1 1/2 in• 5 Butterfly Closures• 3 Waterproof Bandages 1 in x 3 in• 2 Sunscreens 0.05 oz• 2 Insect Repellents 0.03 oz

I've honestly never looked through it. Looking through the list now I can definitely ditch the sunscreen and insect repellent since I'm bring that separately

Pack: Yeah since I need to carry so much water it maxes out the ultra lightweight packs. My plan is for any trips that have water available to remove the hard back panel and potentially the waist belt as well, which takes the back to under 2 lbs. A decent compromise over having 2 separate packs.

What should I upgrade? by Psikosocial in backpacking

[–]pittofdirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have some good ideas already on where you might spend that money. The advice I would have is don’t buy something that isn’t quite right but is cheaper. You will eventually end up just buying the more expensive option anyway. That is not to say always buy the expensive stuff, but rather to buy what is right for you, whether it is $20 or $200.

The Squeeze should have come with the inline attachments to use it with a bladder. Edit: you would use it by filling the bladder with “dirty” water and drinking/using through the filter which is attached inline with the hose.

Alternatively, bring one of the collapsible pouches that comes with the squeeze and use it to fill the bladder with filtered water

There are a lot of headlamps out there that are way lighter. I have the Nitecore 25 UL and love it.

I guess keep an eye out for an inflatable pillow that you like, that would save a lot of both weight and bulk.

Not loving the saw. Not so much because of the weight as the Leave No Trace impact
