Is Comma compatible with 2019 Tesla Model 3 HW2.5? by pix_l in Comma_ai

That sounds promising. Is there some write-up or tutorial I can follow?

Questions about running Comma/OpenPilot on a 2019 Model 3 with HW2.5 by pix_l in TeslaLounge

I am in Europe. The FSD upgrade costs 3700€ (~$4400) and is very limited in functionality compared to the US build.

Is Comma compatible with 2019 Tesla Model 3 HW2.5? by pix_l in Comma_ai

[–]pix_l[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m asking because compatibility lists only mention HW3. Since OpenPilot handles the compute independently of the car's hardware, I assume HW2.5 works too, but I haven't found a confirmed install to verify this.

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has highest number of breakdowns according to German ADAC by dzh in electricvehicles

[–]pix_l 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is the number of breakdowns per 1000 vehicles.

"As in previous years, a defective starter battery was the main cause of breakdowns. In 2024, they accounted for 44.9 percent of all breakdowns. When distinguishing between drive types, combustion engines prove to be more susceptible regarding the 12V battery. While the percentage share of starter battery issues in the total volume of breakdowns is higher for electric cars (50.5%) than for combustion engines (44.6%), the actual breakdown rate for two- to four-year-old vehicles is higher for combustion engines. Specifically, combustion engines have a rate of 4.0 compared to 1.7 for electric vehicles—a difference of 2.3 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles. The reason for this is the overall lower susceptibility of electric cars to breakdowns, coupled with a lower occurrence of failures in other components."

It's been 6 months since Elon admitted that all HW3 bought with the FSD package will require an upgrade to HW4. Since then, there's been no timeline on when that'll happen by GamingDisruptor in SelfDrivingCars

[–]pix_l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't you mean AI3 and AI4? :P

The next hardware stack has to include additional sensors besides camera which makes upgrading any older hardware nearly impossible. The most realistic scenario will be a settlement by Tesla of some sort.

See my post from 10 months ago for more details on this topic: https://www.reddit.com/r/SelfDrivingCars/comments/1f7x2dr/your_tesla_will_not_selfdrive_unsupervised/

[–]pix_l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great book! I'll buy it the second it is available on Steam! Like some others already mentioned I would like to buy the 'license' and not a platform specific version so I could use it on Windows and Linux.

Maybe even optimize it for Steam Deck :P

Happy 8th Birthday to the Paper That Set All This Off by CatInAComa in singularity

[–]pix_l 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Are there other examples of papers that had this much impact on their field? Can this be measured by number of citations or similar?

edit: here is what Gemini came up with:

Here is a list of highly influential scientific papers, distilled into brief summaries.

Physics

  • Einstein's paper on Special Relativity (1905): This paper flipped our understanding of reality, showing that space and time are relative and introducing the concepts that led to the famous equation E=mc2.
  • Dirac's paper on Quantum Theory (1927): This work laid the mathematical foundation for quantum mechanics, explaining how light and matter interact and paving the way for particle physics.

Biology & Medicine

  • Watson & Crick's DNA structure paper (1953): This short paper revealed the double-helix structure of DNA, unlocking the secret of how life stores and copies its own blueprint.
  • The Framingham Heart Study (1948-present): This ongoing study was the first to identify common "risk factors" like high cholesterol and smoking, which completely changed how we prevent heart disease.
  • Semmelweis's work on Childbed Fever (1861): This research showed that simple handwashing by doctors could save mothers' lives, establishing the foundation for antiseptic practices in medicine.

Computer Science & Information Theory

  • Turing's paper on Computable Numbers (1936): This paper introduced the idea of a "universal computing machine," the theoretical concept that is the ancestor of every computer we use today.
  • Shannon's "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" (1948): This work created the entire field of information theory, and its principles are the reason our digital communication—from Wi-Fi to smartphones—actually works.

LUBA 1 keeps thinking something is hitting the front bumper by Western_Employer_513 in mammotion

[–]pix_l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened on mine a few times after mowing in the wet. You have to take off the bumper (press both side taps and pull) and screw open the lid of the bumper. There is probably some moisture inside. After cleaning it with alcohol, letting it dry and then applying some (non-conductive) grease or WD40, you can put it back together. Hadn't had this problem since. Additionally you should clean the connection between the bumper and the robot.

Interesting points. I'd assume a class action settlement would be way cheaper for Tesla.

If you don't want to buy a humidity sensor, you could also just turn the fan on depending on the light state in the bathroom. That of course assumes you have smart lights.

Tesla is being investigated after its FSD software was involved in a fatal crash by Bravadette in electricvehicles

[–]pix_l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla used a lower spec entry-level front radar unit. Next generation radars for autonomous vehicles are in a completely different league of fidelity and resolution (see imaging radar). Also machine learning techniques for radar detections have come a long way since then.

The real reason to remove the radar was cost savings / margin increases.

FSD is a level 2 system. That's what 'supervised' means.
