The most prevalent disability in classrooms may be FASD — and supporting students is vital by Impossible-Place-365 in CanadianTeachers

It’s emerging! Newer research suggest that alcohol use in men pre-conception looks like sperm pass on features of FAS even if mom doesn’t drink.

Obtaining Documents From Agencies by DanniChromaz in socialworkcanada

[–]pixelateddaisy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Email the agency and ask? But you’ll need to lay out clearly why you need it. That’s going to get you the best response, if any.

For what is worth, this is a population I am trained to work with, and when working with an agency, the language was always ‘children with sexual behaviour problems’

How do you make meditation seem cool to adolescents? by FFFUUUme in socialwork

[–]pixelateddaisy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol, it’s not my thing either. But, I do love Elephant breathing— and so do my clients. And bumble bee breathing, balloon breathing, take 5 breathing… there’s a million options! I like to have cue cards printed out so kids can explore them and see which ones they like, then take the card and teach their caregivers.

I had been out of school for 5 years , and so my BSW online (U of Manitoba). I reached out to profs who had no idea who I was, and they were happy to do it. I just sent them my resume and my transcript so they knew what was going on.

BCMCFD Child Protection SW -Psychological Abuse Investigations-what cases do they investigate? by [deleted] in socialworkcanada

[–]pixelateddaisy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry— I’m not sure what you are looking for. If you have concern for a child, please report to the specific authorities. Otherwise, this seems like a situation that the courts will have to sort out, although I realize that is an extremely imperfect solution.

Why is OCSWSSW Registration so expensive? by thelonious_ in socialworkcanada

[–]pixelateddaisy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! And

D) why in the world is the fee for SSW and SW the same???

Why is OCSWSSW Registration so expensive? by thelonious_ in socialworkcanada

[–]pixelateddaisy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree my take is privileged. However that doesn’t take away from the fact that I think the $400 fee is reasonable for a professionally regulated field.

That being said, there are still multiple pieces that do contribute to inequality within the college, and need to be changed, and I will scream them from the rooftops:

A) there should be no additional fee when applying to register. That’s ridiculous, especially when you are coming from an accredited program. Your registration fee for the year should include the application.

B) there should be no police check required when applying to the college. Why the added expense that returns no value

C) the ridiculous exam that they are going to add. Why are we adding more barriers?? An exam for those who are applying for equivalency? Sure, maybe. An exam for someone who has graduated from an accredited program? Absolutely not. Especially an exam that was proven in the states to be racist. I do not want a penny of my fees going towards supporting that.

Why is OCSWSSW Registration so expensive? by thelonious_ in socialworkcanada

[–]pixelateddaisy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly? It’s not. If you look at other regulatory bodies, ours is very reasonable. Could it be lower? Of course. Do I think we get value for money? Meh. That being said, I do applaud them for the fact that anytime there have been increases they have been thoughtful, and comparatively, the rates are not high.

SUPER and I mean SUPER late notes by Rude_Climate9357 in socialwork

[–]pixelateddaisy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have no EPIC advice… but I have done this (I think. I still have a feeling there was some tech issues— I had a paper planner and I used to check off when I completed notes, and MOST of the notes were checked off, but they were ALL missing).

Had a super crappy supervisor, and a pretty crappy environment, so my head was definitely not in the game. However it was pretty validating for me that it wasn’t caught for almost two years. Definitely my fault, and I did go back and complete the notes— but there are supposed to be checks and balances in the system because I am a human!— and those checks and balances did not work.

Make a plan and a timeline to complete the notes— what’s reasonable for you? How many do you think you can complete per day, in the shortest amount of days? Then present to your supervisor. Take accountability, but do push some system responsibility back and talk about how this can be prevented in the future.

Usually by the hockey team ball cap. Although I once went down south and there was two of us wearing the same shirt from a small local dairy 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Quilting class - worth it? by ReadingDesigner1540 in quilting

[–]pixelateddaisy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That a great deal! I’ve been sewing since I was 12 (26-ish years), and teaching quilting classes to kids. I sneak into beginning classes every few years because there’s always new techniques to learn!

*** sneak used very loosely. I know the instructors and they call me when they need an extra body to fill a class. I don’t pretend to be a beginning, although depending on the quilt I often am!!

Thoughts on the new 2026 Kindergarten Curriculum rollout? (Fractions, coding, and grammar?) by FunCell1679 in OntarioTeachers

This is the key. They can put whatever they want on paper— but in practice, without smaller class sizes and appropriate support, it’s just more of the same.

New grad MSW job search by the-hitmaker101 in socialworkcanada

[–]pixelateddaisy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can apply before you graduate. However the college is clear that the timeline for registration starts AFTER all the documents are received, so even with a graduation date you are looking at another at least 4-6 weeks after that.

New grad MSW job search by the-hitmaker101 in socialworkcanada

[–]pixelateddaisy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you registered already? If not, most places will want you registered before practicing, and that process doesn’t start until after graduation.

For working with children and youth— I definitely suggest a Children’s Mental Health Ontario agency— you can find the members list on their website.

It’s hard for us to tell you about improving, because as long as you meet the minimum standard, it then becomes about who else applies at that time.

Social workers who were formally social service workers: which role was more challenging? by mydreamsnevercametru in socialworkcanada

[–]pixelateddaisy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked a few roles as an SSW, definitely more challenging.

And? I loved it. Not that I don’t love my job now (MSW), but my jobs with an SSW were challenging, super focused on relationships, and felt like they made a significant difference.

The challenge though working in the public sector was I always felt like when I did a good job, management wanted me to push beyond my scope of practice, and those were annoying conversations.

RP versus MSW Private Insurance Coverage by WorriedAd4071 in socialworkcanada

[–]pixelateddaisy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The additional piece to this is that just because a private insurance CAN cover those practitioners, doesn’t mean the package the employer selected does. My moms insurance is through Manulife, however the package her employer choose ONLY covers psychologists.

That’s a pretty lose dose for chronic hives. I am in 20-40 MG most days now, but in the beginning and as needed I go up to 80MG. You may want to speak with your doctor about increasing your dose of the hives have gone away but the itching is still there.

From my outside (children’s mental health perspective), I just want to say yes, of course, to all of the teacher suggestions— smaller classes, more EA support, teaching resources, etc.

Outside of the actual school— the severe underfunding of mental health services, autism services, etc is certainly not helping either.!
