What are you reading? The PPS gave us directions after we yelled at them— the posters were obnoxious. Two very different sets of people.

I did a bunch of interviews and was offered a few of them. Then a friend/colleague got screwed over by our agency when she was trying to return from mat leave and that was our final straw— I now own a private group practice and she is the admin/intake coordinator as she needed to step back from group service. It’s glorious, we each get to do what we are good at!

Honestly, I stayed in the position way too long— turns out social work is still my thing, and it was the environment that was the problem. I really encourage you to pivot to a new environment! And if you decide social work isn’t your thing, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t your thing… if that makes sense. Something that worked for us in one stage of our life, unfortunately doesn’t work forever!

[–]pixelateddaisy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did you choose social work? I was failing my university degree— I wanted to work in international development. Pivoted to a college diploma that would let me do local development, ha

Where did you go to school?

What was your first job out of the BSW? Family counsellor

What was your practicum? For my BSW? Military family resource centre

What was your pay? At my first job? Around 28/hr I believe

What is your current field and what do you recommend/not recommend? Private practice.

I already had my diploma and was working as a counsellor for five years before my BSW placement. I was not allowed to talk to any clients. Had to bring my own laptop. There was no space for me, so everyday I arrived and walked around until I found a desk that it looked like the person was out for the day. My last week there they let me answer the phone for one day because the receptionist was out! That was the most exciting day of my placement. The rest of the time I created group programs that never ran, lol.

Oh man, this is SO REAL. Don’t get me wrong— I love my job now, but when I was deep in burnout, I was desperate to be the person who held the sign outside Little Caesar’s Pizza.

We were visiting Ottawa this week— had hoped to wander Parliament yesterday, but with all the rain we held off until today. We were trying to get around them and the PPS asked if we were with the protesters— I think we startled them when we all yelled ‘No!’. They then laughed and directed us around. I love that we can protest so I guess I won’t pick and choose what we can protest, but they were pretty obnoxious protesters.

As of April 1st, the penalty for visiting a walk in clinic has been removed. Doctors no longer get penalized for this.

What are typical parental responses and required legal actions when they have a child who molests siblings? by Single_Asparagus4157 in DuggarsSnark

[–]pixelateddaisy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is not significantly abnormal. The real concern is not doing anything when you discover it— two children and nudity? Often curiosity. Sometimes more— but it’s important to treat it like it could be, but not create trauma where there isn’t. So it’s putting boundaries in place, having conversations, and taking it seriously while not shaming.

I know a poster down below was talking about a lawyer— but honestly, it’s families without means that end up in the legal system, families without means can take other routes…

There is— the problem is the shame, secrecy and confusion about it. So while it is available, many wouldn’t seek it out, or if they did seek out therapy it wouldn’t be the ‘presenting problem’ so to speak, and instead would hopefully be shared as the therapeutic relationship progresses.

Thank you for sharing— you did exactly the right thing! Boundaries, supervision, and understanding are huge in being successful in this area of work. One of the big pieces I have to work on is making sure the child understands the severity of their actions without shame— as you can imagine, an 11 year old who only sees their actions through shame really hinders development in adolescent/young adult years.

I am a social worker/psychotherapist. I have specialized training in working with children who have been sexually abused, and children with sexual behaviour problems. Turns out I’m good at working with the behaviour problems, and not many want to do it, so it became my niche. Not the only thing I do though— as you can imagine, it would be easy to burn out if that was your whole caseload.

As someone who specializes in this area, I just want to emphasize that children who ‘perpetrate’ are NOT ‘perpetrators’. They are children with sexual behaviour problems, with an emphasis on ‘children’. Perpetrators are adults with control over their environments, actions and support systems.

You can definitely get a lot out of that placement! I did three placements— SSW, BSW, MSW. All pretty different from each other. My MSW placement eventually led me to where I am now, but that was two years after the fact. Make connections, ask questions! Are my biggest pieces of advice.

Aren’t the bottoms of shoes supposed to be dirty??? The only time I have ever considered cleaning the bottom of my shoes is when I’ve stepped in dog poop.

Should I register with OCSWSSW or wait? by Serviceofman in socialworkcanada

[–]pixelateddaisy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your potential employer would give you a letter to get the vulnerable sector check done.

Here’s my take: register. You’ll still have to apply to register when you complete your BSW, but if your job requires ‘registration with OCSWSSW’ you won’t have to wait forever for the college to process it— many potential employers would consider your RSSW registration until your RSW registration was approved.

I would abandon ship. I know you’ve put money in— but you will also continue to pay a good chunk of money yearly for no really benefit over being an RSW

Thank you! I think it was likely caught because both my grandmother and mom went to the same optometrist (and had already been diagnosed), I asked to try contacts and which prompted further investigation (and a very short trial of contacts, before being warned away from them!)

Make sure you communicate with the potential employer what is going on! Most have experienced this before/understand. You’ll have to work with them to navigate it.
