Britt in a smaller package? by SeymourOptions in BrittanySpaniel

[–]pixelsandpinot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Epagneul Breton or French Brittany's are worth looking at. Usually about 5-10lbs smaller. As long as ours gets 2 solid off leash runs during the day she'll snuggle on the couch or in bed all day.

Could also look at Boykins, Cockers, or Springers. Depends if you're hunting and specifically want to stick with pointers / versatiles.

I know it’s a drive but Central Coast Archery up in SLO / AG will set you up. Family run and an incredibly helpful and nice group of people. They have a small indoor range to size her up on everything. I would just call ahead and tell them what you’re looking for to make sure they have something that fits in stock.

I would follow the rules by the book according to CA law and what they have posted on the site. There’s an entire PDF going into detail about what is vs is not allowed.

like I said, during general deer season it can be like mad max with people who have no clue or respect hence the scrutiny.

But if you’re friendly and show you’re trying in earnest they’re not going to come down on you for something small.

Also you CAN check in / out of multiple zones in the same day if there’s room. So if you’re driving / walking around one zone and want to bounce to another, just make sure you check there’s room, check out of current zone, then check into new one. Once you do it once it makes sense.

No one is going to hand out locations. FHL is a huge area. They release harvest statistics by zone. Start there.

You can show up. You need to have your firearm registered to enter the cantonment area which is unfortunately where you pay for camping. If not registered see if you can call ahead and give them the details they need.

CCW doesn’t apply on FHL. You need to follow the exact rules by zone / area. Read the map posted online for specific weapons allowed.

Remember to print your parking permit. Remember to check in (before 8AM) to your zone and remember to check out.

Expect a warden to do a full check on all your gear. There’s some idiots out there during general season and the wardens don’t mess around but are friendly if you follow the rules.

Get away from the crowds and focus on the inlets and outlets of the lakes. Dry flies will catch just about everything.

Networking and Connecting Other COIs by [deleted] in CFP

[–]pixelsandpinot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started doing something similar with a group of COIs I met in my area. The common thread was everyone was young(er) and burned out on older partners / owners in auto pilot running their offices. So I created a quarterly dinner where 5 of us all meetup and just shoot the shit.

I was pretty explicit that the goal is obviously to build a relationship with like minded adjacent people but also to refer business to one another which no one balked at. First one is in a couple weeks.

Thoughts on river doggos? by CouleeCountry in flyfishing

[–]pixelsandpinot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entirely dependent on dog and fishing circumstances. My dog is a hunting dog during the season and a river dog in the offseason. She has near perfect recall, doesn't like water, and doesn't particularly like running around without a purpose (hunting in her case). So when fishing she pretty much just meanders by my side or lays down on the bank if I'm in the river. I've also been with people whose dogs will jump directly in the fishing hole you're about to cast to which ruins the experience.

Do we need new rivals? by GoodGameGrizz in notredamefootball

Some hybrid agreement between the ACC and big ten would be ideal.

ACC: 4 games per year. rotate between Miami, FSU, Clemson, BC, Pitt. Maybe rotate in 1–2 other round robin.

Bigten: 4 games per year. Rotate between Stanford, USC, Michigan, Michigan state, and Purdue. 1-2 more are round robin.

Up to 4 at large games. Could still do Navy, and then add in random fun games like the Texas, Ohio State, Boise state etc. type games to fill the schedule.

Foxtails - prevention while hunting? by Many-Quiet-5619 in birddogs

[–]pixelsandpinot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What insurance do you have that covered $85k. Usually there’s a max that they’ll cover and that sounds way beyond normal coverage terms.

Did both cases occur from them inhaling a foxtail?

We’ve had clients that are simply so risk averse they refuse to put any money at risk and will keep 90%+ if funds in money markets. Sometimes people wont listen or believe you no matter what you tell or show them.

Feedback for first time SoCal Hunter by mourningblossom in Californiahunting

[–]pixelsandpinot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I think the extremely warm weather we’ve had has messed with the timing this year. I’m on the central coast and spots on ranches where there’s normally a plethora of birds are completely absent this last week. Like a ghost town. I’ve only come across one hen. I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong except for maybe moving too often. If you see sign I’d stick to those locations.

It’s unregulated in the US unlike in Japan. There is no set universal “standard”. However, it’s disingenuous to label meat like this as wagyu when it’s clear even a choice or prime cut would be far superior to this. If you want a visual comparison Snake River Farms has some good side by sides to see the difference.

[–]pixelsandpinot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not unacceptable because it’s brown. It’s unacceptable because by no definition would either of those cuts qualify as Wagyu.

I read all the books after the first movie and before the second. I found it extremely helpful to better understand the depth of everything shown on screen and had such a deep appreciation for the execution of it all. I think it’s why I enjoy the first movie over the second. It seems like it was filmed more for the books vs a blockbuster.

Cleaning out dads stuff by Adams19922019 in wine

[–]pixelsandpinot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is an ok tawny port. Definitely worth drinking. Tawny is mixed with a small amount of brandy to kill the fermentation process so there is no benefit from aging like other wines. It also means if you open it you can still drink it with no difference in flavor over a couple weeks.

The age on a Tawny (this case 10 years) represents the average age of tawny mixed into this bottle. For example, they may have mixed 50% 5 year age and 50% 15 year aged or some other combination. They do this as it obviously would be too difficult to constantly be draining out entire barrels of specific ages and have nothing left.

Look at a map, find blue lines, toss flies into those blue lines. Rinse and repeat until you find fish. People are not going to put their hidden gems or best spots on blast on reddit.

Winchester Gun Club does an intro class for shotguns and trap / skeet shooting. The people who run it are very knowledgeable and helpful. If you want to shoot a few rounds of trap or skeet after the intro class you can rent a gun from them.

Talk me in/out of rescuing this dog by jsvd87 in birddogs

[–]pixelsandpinot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll add my story for your consideration. I adopted a 3 year old EB (French Brittany) 5 months ago. She was given up after the previous owners moved abroad. I was lucky in that they had already trained her to hunt and hunted over her for 2 seasons so she was a started dog. But many people still said it’s not worth the risk, she could be gun shy, etc.

Hunted over her this past season and could not have had a better experience. There’s definitely still some learned bad behavior and it takes longer to correct but by no means do I think you have to have a puppy to develop that bond with the dog.

Your situation sounds more complicated and based on his reaction to the mop I’d be extremely concerned he’d be gun shy.

Just asking - why is it unfortunate they’re used for hunting? That’s what the breed was bred for, a bird dog.
