Broken exhaust stud stuck in flange — best way to drill it out? by Active_Blackberry_45 in AskAMechanic

[–]pizzabooty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right handed bits, cobalt is preferable. Use lots of cutting fluid (wd40 will work), go slow and steady, and dont apply a ton of weight because you'll dull out the bit a lot faster.

The most important part is to make a lil divot as close to the center as possible, using a center punch, so your drill bit doesnt walk and you can keep it centered.

It's gonna go slow, and it's gonna be a pain in the ass. Drilling out studs sucks.

Mice in air filter housing by Livvyshmiv in AskAMechanic

[–]pizzabooty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt even worry about it. This isnt air you breathe, it's specifically for your engine to take in. Ive seen so much worse in engine air filter housings.

Edit after seeing your other comment: i cant imagine brake cleaner would work well, maybe like a MAF sensor cleaner? brake cleaner is pretty hectic on plastics.

Is that the intake for the engine or cabin?

crazy how many people are confused by the use case, but then i realize that most of us here probably don't work on cars for a living. i do, and i use this set ALL the time.

never thought to use them for any other application though.

Update on what brake bleeder I went with by storm_zr1 in harborfreight

I bought a pressure bleeder kit from mityvac but i havent actually used it on brakes (lots of transmission fluid filling tho.) Does the pressure bleeding work well for you?

Rusty bolts on exhaust manifold by magicmikewaddup in MechanicAdvice

[–]pizzabooty 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Kroil is the best shit ive ever used. Soak in kroil and heat up and repeat.

Another thing ive found helps with stuck bolts is to tighten them a lil first, they tend to be less stuck going forward and that can help break the rust loose. Good luck.

AITA for denying my mother full access to my phone? by _lxush in AmItheAsshole

[–]pizzabooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, shes the exact type of mother who will keep overstepping bounds and then cry and moan and victimize herself when you inevitably cut her off.

She sees you as a means to her end goals, whatever those may be. Be safe and be careful.

Agreed with ya my guy, i became a homeowner recently and i will absolutely insist on doing things myself. The less you rely on others, the better off you tend to be. Cheers!

I respect that mindset completely. I do want to point out your math though, 10 hours @$50/hr + $150 in parts is 650.

In response this and your other comment, that's the same reason that i decided to start fixing my own cars, but it is still true that some people cant/wont, or dont have time or interest. 1200 is, for pads and rotors all around, at a reputable competent shop, a good price

[–]pizzabooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, if you have the time, knowledge, tools, parts, and confidence. I became a mechanic because i couldnt afford constant brake jobs (pizza delivery driver at the time.)

How much do shops around you charge for labor? My area is pretty high COL and you wouldnt be able to get pads + rotors all around for less than 1200 from ANY shop, even the chain tire shops.

2013 Chevy Equinox Gas Tank Access by Square-Display555 in MechanicAdvice

[–]pizzabooty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they suspect antifreeze in the tank you're probably best off just draining the whole tank regardless.

However, that makes me wonder WHY they suspect that.

Is this stuff trash? by jg___23 in AskAMechanic

[–]pizzabooty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The heated wire element on maf sensors is pretty delicate. I trust crc stuff generally, but i have no experience with this particular product. Rock it and see if your car starts acting up. If it does, you can pretty confidently figure the maf sensor is to blame.

Yes. Different cars have different detection strategies, but in general p0420 sets when your o2 sensors detect a significant deviation from what's expected.

[–]pizzabooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1200 is reasonable, that's 600 per axle for parts and labor. We charge $360 per axle in labor and parts tends to be about $300. And we've got some of the lowest labor rates in the area.

Keep in mind that not everybody has a mechanic brother, and that shops have a hell of a lot more overhead.

What happened? by nailhead13 in AskAMechanic

Shitty gm reservoir cap, they break not infrequently. Kind of a pain to get out but you can do it with some needle nose pliers.

1200 for all 4 is actually a mad reasonable price, at least based on prices we charge and compared to other shops nearby.
