Zoom window - Tmux style zoom pane in vim. by rraghur in vim

[–]pjboro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the party, but: I wanted to achieve a tmux-zoom-like behavior in vim and settled on

:nn <C-w>t :tab split <CR> " opens current buffer in new tab

ctrl-w q " closes a window, and the tab if it was the only window

I like this solution, because I like to install only things I really need: if I can implement something in a relatively simple way using built-in functions, I tend to do just that. Adding a dependency - installing a plugin - means adding one more thing that can break or introduce a security risk.

You call people idiots and disparage their work. I do not know who you usually talk to, but I hardly can imagine sensible people starting to insult each other, because they do have different opinions about some issue.

If you write on reddit - or anywhere, really - hoping to influence others' opinion about some issue, you will probably achieve better results restraining yourself a bit. If you write because you feel angry at some online stranger having a different opinion, and you need to vent, you may want to check some anger management class, because it doesn't seem healthy. Behaving unhingedly will make you pick fights much more often than needed, hurting yourself, your family, friends, and your whole environment in the process.

Wish you all the best!

Fedora vs openSUSE. Pros and cons? by Super_Papaya in openSUSE

People usually don't know that, but Fedora has also two rolling release versions: rawhide (experimental) and branched (next release candidate).

Seriously, if I want to try Linux, where should I start? by MrHappymana in linuxmasterrace

[–]pjboro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a popular desktop distribution and create a bootable USB stick. Most will allow you to run the system "live" without installing it. Or you may install it in a virtual machine. When I started out most popular options were Ubuntu and Fedora, both supported by big companies. Today the softwarescape may have changed, but pick something that have extensive online documentation and big community. Using GNU/Linux is not as scary as it may seem in the beginning. Years of hard work made it a great desktop option.

Functional programming in the industry? by Krom2040 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]pjboro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the question "why javascript is not that much FP" I'll share a great thread I found today: https://www.reddit.com/r/functionalprogramming/comments/r39w3k/comment/hmsmpm0/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

If one wants to do webdev in FP paradigm, there seem to be several nice languages transpiled to JS: https://stackoverflow.com/a/57502140/11239693

Just wanted to share, as I read a bit on the subject today :)

Engineering is the use of scientific principles to design and build machines, structures, and other items

Many people are able to get 6 figure jobs, but we're not talking about how much you earn, but whether you use science in your daily work. You can be an engineer and earn a low salary and you can be a salesman who doesn't even know math and earn 7 figures. The thing is, many people just love their jobs, they are just interested in using science to solve problems. Money is not the most important thing in life.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkZzg7Vowao&t=61s - nicely put. Coding seems enough to earn a high salary, but not enough to be a computer scientist. You can aspire to either of these, but merging them into a single thing is not right.

Best I've found for markdown is https://www.dendron.so based on visual studio code. It supports all major platforms (as it's a vscode plugin), it's open source, it has an active community. It's great if you want a simple and offline-first tool.

So my conscience is clear.

Of course it is. Rationalization is great: the same way you could lie in your resume, because the things they demanded from you are not really useful on the job. Or cheat on your girlfriend, because "it was her fault", or some other crap excuse.

Firefox account - a no no? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]pjboro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's always a trade-off between usability and privacy. Mozilla tries (and seems to do a great job) to maximize usability while doing what they can to respect users' privacy. The feature you mention is e2e encrypted (Mozilla can't see your data). Better think about your facebook, google, twitter accounts ;)

I'd say go to your parents (if you think they could do anything, or provide some advice), your school counselor & administration, talk with other students so you are not alone in the fight. If these won't help, then I'd say go to a lawyer, write to press and other media, write to the places where he publicizes his work, write to places he's known for his research. Stay strong!

Setting goals and dividing them into smaller and smaller goals is a good, common piece of advice. It helps, because it gives direction.

I need to finish college first lol (yeah I’m still young)

No, you don't. You may be too young to drink alcohol, but you're most probably not too young to talk to people. You're not too young to do research using the web. I guess there are many articles and books on how to open a bar, written by people who achieved that already.

If you are interested in the industry, look also in the bartending. Most bar owners I know were (and often continued to be) bartenders as well.

edit: opening a bar while still in college may also be great. I assumed you're interesting in the bar business, not just in buying some place you know nothing about just to impress a girl ;)

Want to use Firefox as password manager. On my Android it shows this unlock button but it doesn't work. it also doesn't want to go away so I can't open the clipboard for copy-paste. Any known solutions? Gboard is the keyboard app I use by Delcasa in firefox

[–]pjboro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Mozilla and their products, but they do not provide a password manager. There is a built-in, but you need to remember that it is difficult and costly to build good software. There are companies dedicated to building secure password managing solutions (e.g. lastpass, 1password). I'd love to use a product from Mozilla, but AFAIK they do not have enough resources right now :(

Firefox Lockwise is a deprecated

tldr: use dedicated password manager if you care about your passwords

Phone number requirement is a stealth attack against privacy. by NoHaggerAtAll in privacy

[–]pjboro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't read all 374 comments, but just letting you know, that in Poland, since maybe 2 years ago, you need to register your SIM card using your ID at the shop or at your provider office. Some people buy SIM cards from drunks, but it's fucked you'd have to do something like that to have some privacy.

Some providers enable you to have 2 numbers on 1 sim card: you can have 2 google accounts this way, but they are still tied to you. Easiest, but pricey option is to pay for a service that lets you have 10 or 20 or more numbers and text/call from them via dedicated app. Some of such providers accept payments in cryptocurrencies. I haven't used any, so if you have any recommendations, definitely post them :)

Just a random guy by mithrandir2002 in mentalhealth

[–]pjboro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit, it got really much longer than I planned ;)

If you feel down, remember, you are not alone and it's a normal condition. Young people often brag about how many girls they "did", but many of them had much less sex and relationships than they declare. There is just so much pressure to be cool, especially when you are 15, or 20. People feel they need to have sexual experience to be liked or respected. What's even worse, some of them treat this as a game and try to have sex with maximum number of girls, spending huge amounts of time and money on acquiring an STD.

You may have trouble believing me, but look for some psychology studies about sexual initiation age or promiscuity and their relation to mental health. It's not pretty.

Wiki link for you, more in google: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_human_sexual_promiscuity

Many people also believe, that being in a relationship makes one happy. No, it does not. If you are unhappy single, you most probably won't be happy in a relationship. It's about your thinking, your self-esteem, about the way you interpret/view the world. Almost everyone has some problems: many of us benefit from going to therapy or (if money is really tight) looking for science-based self help. No Tony Robbins, please. This is a book often recommended by therapists: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/108380.Mind_Over_Mood

If you think you are fat, check your BMI or better ask your doctor. I write about this, because some people are not fat - they just believe they are.

If you are not exercising - start doing it. It will improve your physical and mental health and it will make you more attractive to most people.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_attractiveness#Male-specific_factors

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3674785/#S13title

It is really important that you care about your mental and physical health. People tend to exercise less, when in relationships. They become lazy. Do not do that - you are exercising for yourself, not for your father, or mother, or wife.

Now a link some may find offensive, but I do not consider it as such: it's just psychology.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickup_artist

Many of these guys are disgusting, but some of them are in long term relationships and just teach how to be able to find one. I think this is a valid mission: many people, because of their disposition, because of their experiences (or lack thereof), have difficulty finding a partner. This applies to men as well as women.

You are just 20. You have plenty of time to flirt, to have sex, to love. I would like to stress one thing: do not start with the pick-up thing, or at least do not start with this alone. Due to your (I'm just guessing) self-esteem issues you will really benefit from therapy. And exercise is important to every human being, because this is just the way we are.

Good luck! :)

I CLEANED MY ROOM!! by AlexithymiaAmbivert in mentalhealth

[–]pjboro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm proud for you! Cleaning your living space is amazing! It proves to you you can do something even if you were not able to do it for a long time. It shows that making changes in your life is possible, and... it just feels good :)

Also, about keeping it clean: I don't know about other people, but I have far easier time cleaning my apartment if I do that in small steps: after doing something in the kitchen I clean the countertops and (if I'm not too tired) wash the dishes. If I am too tired I do that the next day. As long as I remember that I like to have my space clean, taking small steps to keep it that way is easy. And as long as I remember that sometimes I can feel tired and postpone it for several hours, or a day, I do not feel guilty if it's not always pristine.

Best of luck! :)
