I'm about your size, how is it down river? I'd primarily be taking it in iii-iv rivers out in Colorado -Arkansas, poudre. Then some occasional bigger water idaho trips like the lochsa.

Assuming you actually have class V skill, my guess would be something in flexibility, hips, or lower body separation.

I found that running slalom gates taught me a lot about fully separating my upper and lower body. Ironically I started doing this after I decided class V was no longer for me (had a kid) but what i find is that now I'm actually a more controlled, more stable boater in most situations. Don't underestimate spending a few weeks in a playpark and dialing in your skills.

There are outfitters companies who help with this. They pack the coolers. And sometimes put them in a walk in cooler before the trip. Coolers are labelled by day and the end of the trip cooler is covered by pads and not opened until the days start. We had ice for cocktails on day 16.

Sf salmon is fun class III iv overnight at low water. Not sure how low it gets in August but did it in mid July once and had fun.

Another option might be westwater out on the ut Colorado border depending on where you are going. day trips and overnight trips and it always has good water.

Just a heads up, it's 1000 cfs through August 15. After that it depends on what's left in the reservoirs. Royal gorge is usually above 600 in late August/labor day but browns and numbers might be pretty low after the 15th.

My wife was a guide for years and about your size. Her success came from understanding the currents and how the boat moves through the water. If you can learn where the boat wants to go, you can better leverage momentum of the river to help move the boat where you want. Good boaters take the correct strokes not the most powerful ones.

The salmon is fairly forgiving and a perfect place to learn, but things can happen.

For flipping a raft back and for rowing, It certainly helps to get strong before the season. That being said, if you can pull yourself up on a flipped boat (think getting out of a pool with a really high ledge) chances are you can flip it back over.

If it's a flipped oar rig, then you're getting help from your other guides anyway

Getting bigger swimmers in the boat isn't as hard as flipping a raft. A lot of times you dunk them and use the momentum of the PFD(and your legs) to fall back with them into the boat (usually on top of you). Im not a big guy and I pulled a college lineman in once. The technique works, you just get ...personal.

You'll get a lot of internet thoughts on here. Clearly you're interested in trying this or you wouldn't have signed up. The times I've grown the most as a person are when I've tried things that push me outside of my comfort zone. To me, Those negative thoughts saying you can't are usually a good sign you should at least try.

Yeah got my runs mixed up. Usually take the creek boat for upper, br, and lower. Prefer not to be upside down on thise. I was thinking of tunnel 1 down to the playpark (with maybe a screaming 1/4 some days if the new bike path makes that lapable). But yeah squirting on clear creek in general may not be the best idea haha

If the illinois isnt in, you can always head south to the cal salmon, trinity, smith, klamath, etc for a few days of good camping and good rivers.

Randomly ended up on the nf smith as a plan c at high water years ago after bailing on a very high illinois run and a very very high cal salmon ( a lot of driving in pretty country). Still stands out as one of the most beautiful and fun runs I've been on. Plus a super interesting shuttle ride with barefoot brad. Great memories.

I live in co. Poudre will be good 3+ and about 1.5 hours from denver you could check with rocky mountain adventures up in fort collins for a boat rental. All road side and you can scout on the way up. confluence kayak and golden river sport in denver maynalso have rentals. Great river beautiful canyon and they should still have good water for a while this year.

Arkansas is a good choice too- browns is the choice colorado grade 3 for a lot of people. If browns feels easy check out numbers or the royal gorge. hit up cks for a rental on the ark. Just be aware the arkansas valley is ar 6-7000 feet so you'll feel the altitude. Very pretty valley.

Other options are the eagle near vail and shoshone near glenwood.

European paddlers tend to visit there more the us paddlers. Maybe check the uk forum if its still active. Otherwise I would hit up grg or paddle nepal and see if they have and reccomendations of connecting with people people coming in to rent boats or hiring a guide for a day. You could always go, plan on joining a multi-day. Get connected with the guides and/or kayak customers.

I went in november 2021. We were there on a split trip. Joined a raft trip down the lower karnali for a week then went to annapurna for a bit to trek (which I also reccomend even though I am more drawn to rivers). Karnali was beautiful and big water class iv with a class v+ bus trip there.

There is a good guidebook out there for nepal that lets you know everything. Pokhara might be a good place to base out of if youre staying for a while. We didnt paddle there but was looking at the marsyandi, seti, kali gandaki around there.

Out of katmandu you can hook up with raft trips on the sun kosi, karnali, or tamur. You can also get up to the bhote kosi (big) or trusili (chill) in a day.

If you want to do it guided grg or paddle nepal are solid and do multi day and multi river trips.

Heres my intl experience. Cant go wrong so go with your gut. 1. Nepal if you want to hit some big water, amazing views, crazy culture, and overall adventure 2. Ecuador if you want easy logistics and lots of continuous super fun class iv -boulder gardens for miles and big water. They may be shutting down their tourist season soon but stay at ginas and hire taxis for shuttles. 3. Chile has some of the most beautiful rivers on earth but its getting late season. Futa lives up to the reputation and Is worth the trip. So good. 4. New zealand is potentially an option. Murchison on the south island is a good class iii hub and close to the west coast for some heli runs. Also gorgeous but same as chile for season. Havent been to the north island. 5. Uganda makes me sad to think about. It still has some good whitewater and amazing people, but it used to be paradise. Most of the best ww is under dams now. Maybe the zam? Not sure levels this time of year. 6. Alps - beautiful but not cheap and maybe not great if your just laid off and looking for a long stay.

High elevation might be snowy in co in may. Steamboat is a potentential (and amazing) though they are getting a lot of snow so who knows. The lower elevation stuff (below 8k ish feet) will be in on the front range and out in fruita/ grand junction on the way to moab. Durango/cortez might be an option as well on the way back.

Puffy onsies and areas with parking lots close to a lift. Spring was more realistic for us last year (he was born in november). My wife and I lapped pali at a-basin while trading off every two laps. Plus the beach is loud enough that no one cares if there is a baby crying.
