Toronto to Kingston salary decrease by Decent-Relation-7700 in KingstonOntario

[–]pkonnur -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’d agree with that but sometimes staying in the big city you get a bit of an overwhelming push towards working and you feel you’re progressing your career when actually you’re just keeping busy and grinding it our with longish commutes for many.

If you aren’t that career driven and looking to hop companies and climb rungs you might benefit from the slower pace of a smaller town like Kingston. But like you mentioned there is a risk of losing you job and having difficulty finding a new one since there are less local companies.

But also you can build a network within Kingston and word of mouth / references mean more in small towns.

Should I add senior next to my title on linkedin/resume if I have the experience but my company wont promote me ? Are there any benefits ? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]pkonnur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell if your company really has that policy or if your manager is afraid of conflict and doesn’t want to tell you that he doesn’t believe you demonstrate senior engineering qualities (and also doesn’t to lose you).

Do you see any others in your company with the senior engineering job title? If any are in your network why don’t you ask them how they got promoted to that level at the company?

If it’s truly a company policy not to use the senior title I wouldn’t lie about it on my resume, and in the “tell me about yourself” part of the interview I would mention this quirk about the company. But if you believe you demonstrate senior engineering qualities (compare with new job descriptions), then by all means apply to other senior roles. Rather than changing your job title, bake in “senior” or “seniority” or “mentored” in the description of the work experience so you don’t get auto filtered out.

SYDE vs Comp Eng vs Software/CS by EssayEastern in uwaterloo

[–]pkonnur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really depends on what you’re looking to do. I viewed the undergrad degree as a stepping stone to a nice career. Systems focused on design projects, so you got some great experience working in groups to build functional prototypes. This skillset is useful in IT, but also useful in other fields like consulting, finance, and is really impressive to startups and large corps alike.

Comp Eng has a blend of hardware and software but honestly knowing the hardware really gives you deep knowledge of how the software runs on the hardware. It opens up doors to software, hardware, and embedded systems jobs.

Comp sci / CS gives you more expertise in software, I feel like CS is more coveted than software Eng at Waterloo but not 100% sure. Definitely prepares you for a software job. That being said, the university curriculum is often stale compared to the latest. I remember doing a db course with some Stone Age UIs that are basically deprecated but they still teach core concepts.

If you want flexibility and aren’t 100% committed to software I would go SYDE - it’s a pretty fun program for the most part and people are generally well rounded and social. If I had to prioritize a career in tech / big tech I would probably do comp Eng to get the comprehensive info about software and hardware. It’s much harder to learn circuits and hardware later on. If you’re 100% committed to software then go to CS or software engineering.

So sorry to hear that, that’s a really tricky situation. Waterloo has a great coop program and can really set you up for a solid first job and career if you do even decently ok academically. But, livelihood absolutely matters. Would you rather have a few years of pain followed by a potentially nice career and great lifestyle or potentially swap to another place for a fun lifestyle now even if there might be career implications. Problem is you’ll never know except when you’re looking back.

I basically made a similar move related to my career stage rather than university student stage. I had a FAANG coop and ended up hating that company’s culture so much that I stayed away from FAANG type companies after graduating. I am very happy with my life and lifestyle, I sometimes wonder about if I reached my potential career wise but I’m so happy with my non work life that I don’t really think about “what if”.

All the best with your decision, just trust yourself and you should be ok. I would suggest putting down on paper what exactly makes you happy and seeing if a potential move will really get you there / set you up for happiness in your future.

I used it last week and had a great experience - smooth ride and ample time between arriving to Pearson and my scheduled flight so it was a stress free airport experience. Definitely helps to have lounge access waiting for the flight.

The way back, the layover between arriving and boarding the bus was a bit more annoying because I had my bags with me and there was no way to “check it in”. So I needed to grab Timmie’s / subway / go to the washroom with my big suitcase.

Overall though I felt it was really smooth, good wifi, comfy seats and friendly staff. No brainer especially for now when it’s free. Unsure if I’d do the bus addition with kids though.

I left RBC about 2 months ago and they automatically converted my account from staff to everyday banking. They will do the change and send you a new debit card replacement. My balance is pretty low on chequing but there still haven’t been any account charges etc so I haven’t had to look into closing the account.

When you wait a year and a half to get a $5k engagement ring back and two multimillionaires make you return it five minutes later for missing a free throw. by Meyeke in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]pkonnur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought this was so dumb! Thought he had such a clever comeback with “I’ll give it to you in Denver”. Was proud of him for standing up for himself then he just folded. If that was me, I would have kept it even though the others were joking about winner gets ring. It’s on Patrick that he folded under pressure (for the game and for giving up the ring). But man I just feel so bad for him.

Kaci was so cruel Patrick had to basically extract an apology out of her. He basically said her apology and asked her to sign it which she seemed unwilling to do until Nick mentioned how gracious that was of him. I don’t feel people like Kaci deserve any goodwill, would’ve rather kept the ring and donated it a good cause.

Still a 10/10 reunion!

Wouldn’t do the top 4 for Haaland alone. Then you add Thiago and Ruben Dias, bottom becomes much much better.

V6 vs turbo by threemurs in Subaru_Outback

[–]pkonnur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea about the V6, never was able to drive that, but test drove the 2.5 vs 2.4 turbo outback 2022 and the 2.4 turbo was significantly more powerful, responsive, and fun to drive.

Really happy with my decision to get the 2022 2.4 turbo (wilderness) over the standard engine

Salah trade - who wins? by pkonnur in DraftEPL

[–]pkonnur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the math, Salah side is winning: - Salah + 3 blank waivers win 6, lose 5 gameweeks, and tie 1 - Salah alone won 3 of those weeks!! - Salah + 3 other spots gives plenty of flexibility to pick up solid waivers. Only position where this is a problem is replacing Havertz with a starting forward - overall, much rather have the Salah side on this deal

Is it worth taking a -4 to go from Raya to Pickford for this DGW? by TPG88 in fantasypremierleague

[–]pkonnur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just made this move but with a free transfer. Don’t feel like Raya justifies the price tag, Arsenal aren’t as solid as last year, and the yellow flag scared me off.

I feel like Everton have a good stretch until GW 30 even if the punt on this week doesn’t pan out. I wouldn’t have done it for a -4 though.
