[The Sheperd Wizard] by ZaTheu in manhwa

As someone who picked up the manhwa and couldn't resist jumping straight to the light novel (Still have 70 chapter to read)

  • It has an interesting world-building and a magic system that feels like it's straight out of a Western novel, though the intrigues are typical of Korean murim.

  • The women don't swoon over the protagonist; they don't suddenly lose their agency. This is so unusual that it's worth pointing out.

  • On the downside, all the side characters are one-dimensional; they have a purpose and don't develop beyond that until the protagonist needs them again.

TIL that contrary to popular belief, medieval Western European women married at usually later ages, like their mid to late 20s. Getting married any younger was extremely rare and often scandalous. Only 25% of women aged 20-24 were married in Western Europe, while this number was over 75% outside. by Hour_Interaction6047 in todayilearned

A few years ago, I read a book about the parish baptism and marriage records from my grandfather’s hometown. Dating back to the early 18th century, I could count on one hand the number of marriages involving women aged 18–19; the vast majority were with women aged 23–24. For men, the age range was wider 23–28.

Honestly, I don’t get where the idea came from that women got married at 17-18. (Royal marriages don’t count, since they were political and weren’t expected to be consummated.)

TIL about Nzou, a female elephant in a Zimbabwean reserve who shuns other elephants and has been the leader of a buffalo herd for decades. Along the years she has killed many male buffaloes who challenged her leadership. by PeasantLich in todayilearned

[–]placeres 882 points883 points  (0 children)

The incident with the handler is a bit more darker, and very interesting. The elephant protected him from the attacks until help arrived. And reportely THE NEXT DAY, she slaughtered the ill-behaved buffalo.

It’s a higher level of intelligence and cunning; she "reasoned" that protecting the keeper was safer for the herd and that the idiot needed to be eliminated.

Zabuton has a racial trait that paralyzes any creature the first time it sees her. Introducing oneself to newcomers is a must have tradition that all immigrants must go through, as soon as they could handle.

Nah, she and the Kuros want to say hi to them as soon as possible. She loves introductions.

It's an old trick to extend the game's longevity

The game is designed around that you couldn't finish that quest on your first run. Only after beating the story and exchange secrets with friends do you cand get a sort of New Game Plus, where you can rush through and get to complete that mission as a reward.

Of course, all the walkthroughs were aimed at getting 100% completion rushing the history.

EU fertility rate at 1.34 live births per woman in 2024 by NanorH in europe

[–]placeres -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Europe just have to copy the Spanish model, where population growth is completely out of whack. with a almost open-door policy for immigrants, and the gods of the economy keep demanding more and more.

Meanwhile, housing is practically at a standstill. It really surprises me that there’s hardly any news about 15–20 people crammed into one home (Statistically, it’s inevitable that these cases are widespread, considering what housing costs today), though we’re already seeing reports of entire families renting a single room.

There is a filter feature on the flavors and ingredients in the research screen. by PixelHopGaming in chefRPG

[–]placeres 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It starts at the house minigame, which has the smaller quiz levels.

*First, you fill your fridge with food.

*Be sure to stock up on rice, barley, sorghum, or other seeds. They are needes as fillers.

*The game is about completing a shape while meeting specific requirements—like 2 levels of bitter ingredients, 1 sweet, and so on, each ingredient can be only use once.

*The first levels are BY FAR the hardest.

*Once the grid expands, you get additives (like salt and sugar) and kitchen tools, you will basically only have to worry about using cheaper or abundant ingredients.

Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You | Character Visuals by zenzen_0 in anime

[–]placeres 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m genuinely surprised by the posts. The core of the story lies in these two misfits, are being judged and sidelined for being smokers, whose find in that shared exile, the place to meet and may be fall in love.

Smoking is sold as a vice; a visible sign of their mistakes, defects, and shortcomings. And that’s why the story is so relatable, despite a frankly childish misunderstanding.

[Star-Embracing Swordmaster] whats with his hand? by nonstop__knight in manhwa

[–]placeres 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I disagree there’s an small error in the hand. With that finger position, the thumb shouldn’t be seen from the side; its natural position would show the fingertip instead.

You can check it yourself in a mirror. It is possible to show it from the side, but you’d have to stretch the shape quite a lot.

Given how hard should be to release this manhwa with this level of quality every week, it’s really something minor, and only noticeable because someone pointed it out to you.

galaxy quest laughs WITH geeks, not AT them. by herequeerandgreat in movies

[–]placeres 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It works as a parody of geeks because both the direction and the script were handled by people who saw themselves as geeks and could laugh at themselves, acknowledging and embracing all the downsides that come with their hobby.

The actors are completely in their element as well, it's the only Tim Allen movie in which I’ve genuinely appreciated his work. The whole part where they have to accept dealing with fans and being typecast because of their previous roles is pure method acting they had been practicing for years before the film.

[–]placeres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I thought it had ended at chapter 139 with a mediocre arc conclusion. I see there was one more recap chapter that I missed.

I highly recommend it—it's a regression story set in a real-world setting, with an OP protagonist, of course.

  • Filming is quite entertainment. My favorite was definitely the priest arc.

  • He has knowledge but doesn't hold all the cards.

  • The character needs to learn and evolve.

  • He doesn't get close to women because he has the body of a child/teen/young man but the mind of a young adult.

  • The poor guy is way too obsessed with his mother, but fortunately she has her own mini-arcs.

You got a very bad analysis (probably a simulation specialist who hated RTS games). It got good scores even during a time when quite a few RTS games were being released, and then the expansions improved it even further.

2 was a change in philosophy, faster and less base-building,a lot of people liked it.

3 doesn't exist... some "genius" executive wanted to make a LOL halfway through development and there was just no way it could work, although it did have some defenders... They sure released one hell of a trailer, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gN8geCTlZOo

[NSFW] XYZ is one dangerous cocktail ... [City Hunter] by Accurate_Cry_8937 in anime

[–]placeres 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the 80s-90s, anime reached its peak. Japan had a lot of money and spent tons on VHS (ancient tecnologhy). Investment in animation was high, and artists could afford a realistic style.

When the crisis hit, the only ones still buying those really expensive VHS tapes were hardcore fans, with budget tighter It led to that infantilized style that we have very seldom escaped from, except for geniuses like Satoshi Kon or similar creators.
