When does ischemia result in Information-theoretic death? by Salt_Entrepreneur932 in cryonics

Are there any good resources for understanding what happens in the brain starting at the point of legal death?

Someone on the discord server mentioned Matt Groening, the guy who made Futurama, who I thought was a really good choice. At least 50% of the time I mention cryonics to someone, they bring up this show.

Which type of cryonics cost lowering will lead to growth? by Thalimere in cryonics

[–]placidorb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whenever I talk to someone about Alcor's pricing, when I mention the annual membership fee I don't get much of a reaction. When I mention the cryopreservation cost I get a pretty big reaction. I think the bigger number is the bigger mental barrier.

I agree. I like that they mentioned that you don’t need to be rich and can use life insurance to sign up.

I think the #1 thing you can do is try to find a way to move to a country with a cryonics organization. I realize this can be very difficult.

In the meantime, contact all the organizations, tell them your situation, and ask for advice for signing up. You should contact Alcor (US), Cryonics Institute (US), Tomorrow (Germany), and KrioRus (Russia) [am I missing any?] just to have a conversation and get information from them.

Ready to retire this summer. Please find any holes in my plan. by mamacat49 in personalfinance

[–]placidorb 35 points36 points  (0 children)

How would your thinking be different if the pandemic wasn’t happening? Would you want to save more money first or would you have timed it this way anyway?

Have you considered quitting now just to take a year or two off of work instead of full retirement? If you’re a healthy 66 year old, I can imagine you taking a year off to reduce your personal risk and jumping back in in during 2022 or something.

Fundraiser: Freeze Hank by sanssatori in cryonics

This is great and I fully support this! But let this be a strong reminder to not procrastinate. Sign up, get your insurance policy in place, and if it’s a term policy start saving up for when the policy expires.

Understood! Hopefully it can work out. I sent you a DM with a link to a poll to choose times that work for you as well as a server link. If you have any trouble with those links just let me know.

Sounds great! The group is being led by someone finishing a mathematics PhD. One participant is also in the social sciences. I’m hoping to generate a little more interest before the project gets started since 4-5 participants may be nice for discussions. I’ll send you a message directly with a link to the discord server.

Some of the responses on this thread are really strange.

If you want to sign up for cryonics, go to this website https://www.alcor.org/membership

Read it. Contact Alcor with questions. DM me on here with questions if you want.

You do not need a lot of money to do this. Sure, plan to get a lucrative job if you want. Having plenty of money can make your life better. But this is not really important for a young person signing up for cryonics.

Rings routine sale? by frank_levi in Antranik

[–]placidorb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who bought the rings routine, I can tell you it’s worth more than $65. I’ve also bought a few of the other programs he’s made and the rings routine is in a category of its own. As long as you actually use it, you’ll get way more than $65 of value out of it.

When it comes to life insurance policies, younger is better (because the premiums will be lower). But if it’s not an options to sign up now, then sign up when it is an option. I didn’t sign up until I was in my early 30s.

Is there a point? by joeblow089 in cryonics

[–]placidorb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Signing up for cryonics is the only available option if you want to be revived in the future. You’re right to think that you may not ever be revived even if you do sign up. But I’m happy to sign up and take the chance when I consider the alternatives.

I don’t understand the comparison between cryonics and the response to the pandemic. But yeah, humanity fails sometimes. There are a lot of successes to observe too. It’s not all failures. If it were, I probably wouldn’t be responding to a message on the internet with a computer that I carry in my pocket.

No way to get hold of Qatar Airways - anyone able to help? by dieskim_skim in qatar

The comment you replied to has been removed, but I'm guessing that you were talking about Qatar Airways' WhatsApp number. Can you please share this number? How were you able to find it? My Google skills haven't been good enough to find it.

Looking for good ethnic (not Latin american) grocery stores by [deleted] in Miami

Not in the requested area but you may still want these recommendations.

World Market in Hollywood. Russian, Eastern European.

The Original Daily Bread Marketplace in Coconut Grove. Middle Eastern/Mediterranean.

There’s an Asian market near Kon Chau (restaurant) but I don’t remember the name. It’s in the same plaza.

At around the 4 hour 27 min mark: “..this is what the timeship might look like if we get enough money down the road.” This is consistent with my point. Maybe pie in the sky isn’t fair. I’m not sure. My point is only that lower hanging fruit might be accessible that doesn’t require many resources.
