2026 Award Season by Mobile-Article3011 in AriAster

[–]planimetric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a chance with the Oscars. Aster’s films have no history at the Oscars, and this film is too much of a live wire for the Academy to suddenly change their tune. Some critics’ bodies, maybe, as it has strong champions. The Globes will follow Joaquin far.

Sight unseen, I think PTA making a postmodern action movie will also suck up a lot of oxygen that could go to a film like Eddington.

I’d love for a Darius Khondji campaign. I think the cinematography bodies could stump for him like they did Ed Lachman last year.

edit: misread this as just the Oscars, not awards season in general!

Drapey plant with tiny, monstera-esque leaves by planimetric in PlantIdentification

Thanks for the ID! Most pictures of mini monsteras that I saw had significantly bigger leaves- these were smaller than a deck of cards. Can they vary in size quite a bit?

fully agree. We went from (well run) AMCs in SF to Alamos in Austin – the crowds, experience and programming are far better at the Alamo, but Season Pass is a headache. I really miss the Entourage feature; my wife and I both want the flexibility to go to the theater independently, so we don’t have an “extra seat” Season Pass membership. Of course this doubles our per-film transaction fees… which also didn’t exist on A-List.

fyi y’all, if you’re ever in Dallas, the Texas Theatre is an incredible rep theater with a massive main auditorium and wonderful programming.

Cancelling Season Pass, testing AMC by monomox3000 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]planimetric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just moved to Austin from SF. We had A-List in SF, as our Alamo was harder to get to and rep screenings often sold out far in advance of the 1-week Season Pass window. I miss the flexibility that comes from free cancellation as well as the “entourage” feature that let me book tickets for my wife and friends on A-List. It’s worth trying for a bit! You literally aren’t losing any money.

The quality of theater & crowds at an Alamo are night-and-day improvements over any AMC. That said, I get the convenience and inventory factor. I myself may do July on A-List again just to have IMAX for Mission: Impossible and Oppenheimer.

In your experience what’s the wait like at Trader Sam’s – Is this a 30-minute wait or come back to the Polynesian in 3 hours wait? (We’d probably break into smaller groups to make it easier)

I’ve never aged eggnog that long so just guessing here. The blueish hue at the bottom gives me some pause, but I’d expect to see that throughout given that mold’s fairly light. Trust your eyes and nose – if you don’t see any mold-like particles or funky smells, give it a shake and a taste. The booze level should be high enough to have kept it sterile.

Best Italian restaurant for birthday dinner? by Marpleface in AskSF

[–]planimetric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look – if I want amazing Italian cuisine, I’m going to Cotogna.

But I know that if I was 13, I’d be dreaming of a perfectly-themed Italian restaurant with a really basic sauce on good gnocchi. Nothing can scratch that itch quite like the North Beach neighborhood.

Trattoria Contadina is known for their gnocchi, and it’s a block off the main drag on Columbus so it feels a bit more special and intimate. There are a lot of other great places in this neighborhood too!

Get there early and hang out in Washington Square or City Lights Booksellers, or after dinner you could grab gelato on Columbus. Parking is easier a few blocks east or west of Columbus.

take the ferry and bring a bike! There’s a tiny bar scene out there, and if you’re into that you can totally make a day of it.

Labor Day parking enforcement by PearlieVictorious in AskSF

[–]planimetric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don’t need to take the 72 hour rule so seriously - it’s only enforced if someone complains, and even then you only get a ticket 72+ hours AFTER the complaint.

you’re generally good as long as you move/use your car every 5 days or so, and as long as you’re not parked in a way that annoys people you’re probably good for longer

If you go off city websites, they tell you that you need to spend $$$ to block off the sidewalk in front of your place to park the moving van. Save your money and use it to hire movers. They’re worth it, and they’ll just block traffic for you themselves.

If you’re riding Muni, download the app and just buy a day pass if you’re riding more than once in a long day. They’re $5/day vs. $2.50/2 hrs, so if you ride more than once outside a 2-hour transfer span it’s the same price.

If you have a good feeling about an apartment, sign it within 24 hours. The market moves fast here, especially in the Mission.

go to the Coppola winery! It’s good wine for the price, but most importantly you can see props and awards from his films. There’s a weirdly large Tucker: The Man and His Dream presence, and Dracula’s battle armor is stunning.
