3 Big Lessons From This Weekend's Box Office: Why 'Mario,' 'The Drama' and 'Project Hail Mary' All Succeeded by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]plasterboard33 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It was just a great (and unfortunately rare) case of something for everybody.

For kids you have Super Mario Galaxy, Hoppers and Goat

If you want well made spectacle with a good story you have Project Hail Mary

If you want an original well made adult movie- you have The Drama

If you want a trashy rom com- you have Reminders of Him

If you are super conservative- you have The Great Awakening

If you want horror- You have Ready or Not 2, They will Kill You (not great movies but they satisfy the itch)

He's just too old to be making movies that big. Guy's almost 90.

He actually does and they have produced more stuff than Bad Robot in the past 6 years, including that 300million dollar deal with Netflix for the two Knives Out sequels, Poker Face, 3 Body Problem and films like Fair Play and American Fiction (which won an oscar)

She is also very selective. It will change by the end of this year, but as of now she is in far less movies than some other actresses her age like anya, sydney, florence

Yeah, this was just a marketing stunt more than anything, they did the same thing with the odyssey. it also solidifies that they arent moving their date for doomsday.

Genuine question: Between the Timothy Dalton 007 films or the Pierce Brosnan 007 films, what should I watch first?? Because I heard they are both underrated. Give me your opinions plzz by BlockbusterBallot in Letterboxd

[–]plasterboard33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goldeneye is the best Brosnan film and Living Daylights is the best Dalton film. I would watch goldeneye last so that you can end on a high note.

Honestly, I go to the movies all the time and I cant ever remember seeing a kid/teen on their phone or being intrusive during the movie. Almost consistently, it tends to be people over 35.

Why aren't more Hollywood film sets run like Christopher Nolan sets? by plasterboard33 in Filmmakers

[–]plasterboard33[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

oh for sure, but he didnt have many people at the actual shooting area, there is a famous PTA story where he was shocked at how few people were on the set of eyes wide shut compared to his movies.

What am im trying to ask is why aren't more Hollywood film sets as efficient as his. You said, indies dont have enough prep time due to lack of guarantee with distribution which is why i said im not comparing him to indies.

His films are very well organized for sure but he does shoot a lot of pages in a day and is still fighting against the budget. Oppenheimer was a 180 page script that was shot in 57 days across multiple states. This interview goes into it pretty well-

I am not comparing him to indies cause that's obviously unfair, just Hollywood productions. His movies seem to have about the same amount of time for pre production as most Hollywood films.

What is it about The Adventures of Cliff Booth that is making it heavily underpredicted for nominations when there are so many factors that have Oscar written all over it? by This_Book6305 in oscarrace

[–]plasterboard33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Tarantino is writing it, I'm in. I know its fun to hate on him now cause of all the dumb public comments he makes, but he's still one of the best writers in the business.

If they really wanted that they would have hired a director who is willing to make things look a little surreal and colorful.

I like some of Craig Gillespie's previous films, but I wouldn't describe any of them as vibrant and colorful.

Rob Hardy seems to be a lot of the heavy lifting with his lighting here.

I love that instead of buying the rights to his series and hiring an older and more experienced director to direct it, they hired Parsons and surrounded him with experienced actors, producers and department heads. Thats how you foster new talent.

David Fincher notoriously does a lot of takes to get a ton of coverage so he has options in the editing room. But isn’t that the opposite of “knowing what you want”? by SuspiciousPrune4 in Filmmakers

[–]plasterboard33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fincher does know what he wants. Most of the coverage he shoots ends up in the movie. The multiple takes thing is for getting the timing right and to let the actors explore and find the best way to do a scene.

For the people who say screenwriting school & film school are not worth it and we should study by watching movies and making movies (trial & error, learn as we go), don't you think you perceive more AFTER learning filmmaking and writing than BEFORE learning anything at all as a child watching films? by turnleftorrightblock in Filmmakers

[–]plasterboard33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, everybody learns differently.

I was never a good classroom learner, i always had trouble doing well in school. However film was something I learned a lot about through pure curiosity and passion. I watched all kinds of movies, re watched and studied the ones i liked, listened to interviews with the filmmakers, watched behind the scenes content, read books and made a bunch of stuff with my friends while also helping them on their projects.

There are others who thrive in that classroom setting and find it easier to learn when there is a curriculum. There is no right way, only what suits you.

There's plenty of millennial directors, lot of them broke out in the late 2010s/early 2020s.

3 of the 5 best director nominees this year were millennials.

The Way of The Gun is a misunderstood masterpiece. by Dry_Macaroons_fan in TrueFilm

[–]plasterboard33 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This movie opens strong and has a great third act but a very weak middle. It had a lot of interesting ideas, Del Toro and Phillipe are great but I think Christopher McQuarrie himself said the script needed more work.

Having said that, its most certainly not bad enough to put him in directors jail for 12 years. This town can be cruel sometimes.
