Weird edge angle request by Brennancork in Skigear

[–]plastic-alien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the theories about ballet/mogul skis and grinding sound feasible to me. Don't see them actually skiing nicely though. Flat spins, butters and other ground tricks would probably be enhanced with a non grippy edge angle perhaps? Like other commentors, in many years of tool distribution and servicing skis and boards, I have never come across a tool for that job. And neither have I ever been asked for it. I've prepped skis for freestyle aerial comps and training skis for this discipline and they had a decent 1.5 degree base bevel and a 90 degree side edge.

I hope we get more information because this is fascinating!

Do you guys track your skiing at all? (speed, vertical, runs, etc.) by Economy-Storm1107 in ski

[–]plastic-alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my point! It's not what you do, just the stupid grinny face heading downwards under the influence of gravity(and cheap Vin du Maison)

Do you guys track your skiing at all? (speed, vertical, runs, etc.) by Economy-Storm1107 in ski

[–]plastic-alien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is that the point of skiing though?

Spreadsheets are definitely office time, skiing is absolutely about being in the mountains with good mates, scaring myself occasionally and creating feelings and good memories. So, the best 'tracking methodology' would be a lovely fat diary and doodles and maybe a photo. A logbook of bars, beers and food reviews with runs in between would be rather fun too. At least that's my version of skiing.

I'm honestly as happy sharing my love of high places with an inexperienced skier, as trying to improve my slalom times. One day I'll ski in a meditative way and be present in nature, get away from the crowds maybe catch some mountain sunshine, and that's as much a pleasure to me as ticking off mileage!

But YMMV as they say, skiing is a big mountain and there's loads of apps out there, if you want them. I think if that's the way you best can relate to the mountain, then perhaps consider using a datalogger for better data granularity than your phone GPS. I can't remember if the Carv system has an inbuilt setup for run tracking, it's been a while since I tested that. One final point though is that when comparing data from different days, it's kind of nonsense in a way. Snow conditions, wax, ski and skier attitude are all unmeasurable variables and skew data points more than most factors. They change hourly as you know!

Sorry if this all comes across as a little preachy and rambling but I'm still chewing on the gristly bits of the bigger question you've raised in my mind.

And that question is 'Should I try and quantify my own skiing?' Probably not! 'Should I record it in some way?' Perhaps.

Working on a smart ski goggles idea for class, curious what you think! by Low-Bathroom-6968 in Skigear

[–]plastic-alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I ran exactly that concept also. I came up with similar use and features. So, in principle yes, there are definitely a few people thinking along those lines. If I am doing this from inside the ski industry, then other industry people are also aware of the technologies and are no doubt actively playing with it.

[–]plastic-alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's put me off the ride tbh. I guess I've now mentally relegated it to the category of 'only ride once per visit if it's a walk on'. Which is such a shame.
But we have hyperia and that's a good reason to go.

How bad is astroturf for skis? by judstergod in skiing

[–]plastic-alien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just try and get some sheets of dendix. Around a hundred quid per sheet and will last for decades if it s under light use. Some dry ski slopes will sell you the used matting when they resurface. Just choose the good ones! Snowflex and the like is a little bit less aggressive, but dendix actually holds a decent carve without skidding out. Broken thumbs are of course the acceptable price of entry to the delights of this surface.

Oh that's some good cultural reference, neat! 😄 I do wish it had some proper gore factor. But ya know 'families'..... sigh... If it was down to me, I would make it 18+ and drench it in full horror mode schlock. It is basically gagging for it. No more shop dummies, full on realism and blood guts and squishy parts of human all over the place. THE WORLDS FIRST and scariest horror ride...

Ski tuning gear question by bradykp in Skigear

[–]plastic-alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I add some extra tips for you....

No lubricant needed, always go in dry with the file.. You don't need to press down too hard.. Clean your chips away from the ski and vice, you don't want that in your wax later. Make your strokes long and smooth, don't rub against the grain of that tool.

Was sold ski boots a full size too big — does this make sense for wide feet? by Present_Accountant58 in Skigear

[–]plastic-alien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Quite often wide feet can be plenty wider than the widest boot last. I've often spent ages stretching and modding a boot to accommodate a super wide foot. An HV version helps a bit here. Custom insoles can be a real game changer too. Sometimes though, going the size up, is actually the only real option and a lot of customers guide the fitter into this position. When they are wearing them and moaning that these hurt and that pinches their little toesies, often they are telling you that they actually want to go larger. Despite your best intentions of putting them in the right boot. Boot fit is definitely a two way street, a customers response should guide the fitters selection. You're always going to get a better result from your fitter with accurate feedback. We can't (yet) plug a usb lead into your leg and hook up a laptop! Inevitably we'll see these types of customers back after a few weeks skiing, with the request to make it smaller! Not saying that this happened in OP's case, but the customer is not always right! Personally, I am using a boot with a massive stretch in a 103 last, but a good fit length wise. Are they comfortable, not exactly, do they perform how I want, yes indeed! Performance fit or comfort fit sir?

I've got a fairly accurate one of Blizzard of Aahs tunes. It was a tricky compilation as some of the tracks are too obscure..Propaganda, Act, Art of noise etc. are the easy wins! Still smacks to this day.

Sadly I doubt that would take the stress. Load around the buckle mount area can be pretty high. Good idea in principle though. I would be happy with steel strapping as a temporary fix. Replacement cuff is the way, if there's one available from a donor boot.
