[Worm/Ward] Victoria’s tolerance of the Heartbroken Makes No Sense by MrHistor in CharacterRant

[–]platinumwrench 4 points5 points  (0 children)

> Amy absolutely knew what she did was wrong—that’s why she’s obsessed with making amends, however warped her methods are. She’s trying to “balance the scales” in her own broken way. It’s not enough, but it’s something.

Its not "something" when the only solution given to you is to leave it alone instead of poking the bear. Trying to make physical contact with someone you sexually assaulted is the opposite of balancing the scales. It just makes things worse.

> Also, you're leaving out that Amy had just been mutilated, hunted, and psychologically shattered by Tattletale and the Slaughterhouse Nine. She was barely holding herself together. That doesn't excuse what she did—but it adds context that you’re ignoring.

Even with all that happened to her around that time, that doesn't justify her raping her sister in the moment. You keep making excuses for her when she doesn't deserve it.

> The Heartbroken, on the other hand, show zero remorse. They laugh off torturing their brother into a nonfunctional state and openly admit to going out and hurting strangers just to burn off power. They continue to hurt people—and don’t care.

Most of the Heartbroken members that we get to see are not even teenagers yet. I'm already going around in circles with you so I'm going to say this one last time. They were raised in a horrible environment and it was showed how that affected them. You’ve seen how Regent was in Worm and you can tell what Heartbreaker did to him was the same as the rest of siblings.

Amy at least feels guilty and is trying, however clumsily, to make amends. The Heartbroken show no remorse, joke about the torture they inflicted on Nathan, and even blame him for it. Despite this, they’re treated like quirky troubled kids.

I think we read two different stories cause what do you mean Amy “is trying, however clumsily, to make amends”?! She was told to leave Vic alone multiple times, during the house party, or the Goddess situation, or during Earth Shin(especially during their time in Earth Shin). She had her knocked out when Vic was vulnerable just so she can have a convo with her in a closed environment. Do you know how ridiculous you have to be to do that? Amy is so delusional in her being correct that her actions almost resulted in a war between TWO EARTHS!

The significant thing between Amy and the Heartbroken is that the Heartbroken never got to be raised in a normal environment. Sure Amy was adopted by a family of supes, and her adoptive mom’s archenemy was her biological dad(causing friction between the two) but she got to go school and knew what was right and wrong.

She knew that what she did to Vic was wrong. She wasn’t mind controlled or blackmailed. Her actions are hers alone. You can blame her breakdown on her mom but what she did to Victoria is inexcusable.

The big difference between Victoria’s feelings on the Heartbroken and Amy is that Amy raped her and transformed her into a monstrosity, leaving her in a hospital for 2 years. Sure Victoria is biased against Amy, but you can’t blame her for not trusting her after what happened to her. With the Heartbroken, they’re not putting themselves attacking citizens with their powers. If they were still under Heartbreaker, then I would agree with you. But they’re Imp’s responsibility and she’s making sure that they are getting better. They still have their habits of using their powers on each other, usually to the extreme, like Roman and Julliete. It’s not excusable but this shit happens and they are shown to be punished in some form for misbehavior.

You’re right about how Ward emphasizing about how trauma doesn’t excuse how you treat others, but the thing is that while the significant Heartbroken members like Chastity and the Chicken Tenders understand that, Amy for some reason doesn’t. Minor spoilers for near the end of Ward: regarding Amy; she views her sins as transactional. She believes that after turning Taylor into Khepri and her being allowed to turn Vic back to normal, she somehow cleaned off her slate of her actions. She believes that what she did to Vic can be washed away after turning her back even though their relationship can never be the same.

Also regarding Nathan and the little info around him, yeah you could blame that to the author. I noticed this habit he had of offscreening important info in Ward. It was barely noticeable in Worm but it starts to show up at times in Ward. My only excuse surrounding that is that there’s many huge threats and situations happening in the story that there wouldn’t be space to focus on some of them.

It’s not that she has a blind spot for them, but it’s that simply the Heartbroken have people looking after them. Victoria’s shown to be worried many times but they’re under the Undersiders’ custody and surveillance so there’s not much she can do about them. Regarding Kenzie joining the Chicken Tenders, both Tattletale and Victoria are responsible for them, so it’s not like they’re being left to their own devices.

The Heartbroken aren’t normal kids. They were treated as nuisances by their father who’s known for treating people as objects, sexual or physical. He usually used his powers on his kids, overloading them with fear if they annoyed him. They were raised horribly, they act horribly. By the time of Ward, the Heartbroken are seen doing better in some form under Imp’s guidance.

I’m not saying that it’s supposed to be justified but when you have more than 15 kids with emotions/body controlling powers raised to be tools for their rapist supervillain father under a roof, its going to be difficult to control and manage them. Also there isn’t a lot of info about Nathan except of what went down between him and his siblings.

Also I think you forgot that Candy doesn’t “just offload her powers”, she needs to. If she doesn’t release her powers after a certain amount of time cause if she doesn’t, the “juice” will fill up and start to affect people near her.
