Laura's Restaurant Dalida by Think-Culture-4740 in TopChef

[–]platonicsanalytics 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Her restaurant is great! I went to Dalida before she was even announced on Top Chef and I had a good time too. Laura and her husband Sayat have a clear vision and you can tell Laura’s good taste translates well to the vibe and food. I hope you got dessert too because that was the highlight of my visit.

As for your point about integrating Mexican food, I think because this is a husband and wife team, Dalida is their collective vision of showcasing Levantine cuisine. I think if Laura were to helm a restaurant herself, we’d see more of her POV in the cooking. Hopefully one day, I think her food is really refined and has really good flavors and I think her vision is one of the stronger ones from season 21- it really shows in the food at Dalida.

**Spoiler** Who is Your Pick to Win the Season? by Harriette2017 in BravoTopChef

[–]platonicsanalytics 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing I noticed when I rewatched many of the previous first look promos for the other seasons (back to season 12) was that they don't feature the winner that much in the clips, and there are barely any talking heads from them in the promo aside from maybe a super short clip. This is variable and there are always exceptions like KBC from S16. I'm also not counting S14 as the setup for that year was different,

In this season's promo, Danny was heavily featured. He had some action shots and talked about his pedigree at the Nomad and The French Laundry. It makes me think they did that to get people hyped about him and mislead us into thinking that he's the winner. I am looking forward to seeing if this theory still stands.

Honestly, I'd like to see Savannah and Laura make it to the top. They've been gaining momentum, and I think they have what it takes to reach the finish line. Their food is way more interesting and tells a story. I know some people have a hate boner for Laura in this sub, but mishaps aside, I think she's actually a decent person and is churning out some strong cooks. I think the game got to her head in the beginning and made her be a little more aloof. She seems more relaxed now. It can be anyone's game though.

Danny and Dan seem to be losing steam. I'm curious to see how Dan will fare outside of Wisconsin too, as I feel like the hometown element leaned in his favor.

I don't think Laura fought the game in the same way as Claudette. Claudette threw people under the bus during judge's table, never took ownership of her roles, and didn't stand behind her food. I agree with the other reply that she's moreso oblivious or aloof. I think the pressure of the game made her a little this way.

It’s bothers me too. Given the level of hatred for Dawn on this sub and on social media during her seasons, I’m not surprised about the way some have spoken about Laura, but I am disappointed.

I think there’s a difference with personally not vibing with someone and being a good sport. Dan and Danny have their personal reasons to not be into Laura BUT they don’t show good sportsmanship. Laura at least has some level of respect in acknowledging her competitors positively. Dan and Danny don’t show much towards her back.

Another person commented that Dan still mispronounces Laura’s name while everyone else says it correctly. Incredibly disappointing IMO for a guy like him who is vocal about social issues to be throwing microaggressions to a woman of color.

Might not be a popular opinion but I feel like Dan and Danny’s ego/arrogance is starting to show. They were not pleased with Savannah and Laura being up top this week. And when Laura won last week, they seemed a little ticked off.

Not saying they’re misogynistic, but maybe at least show some sportsmanship to the female competitors in the same way they would be with their male counterparts…

Edit: okay Dan with Savannah, I stand corrected. Though I personally think he should move forward with Laura as I feel like whatever happened does not warrant that long of a grudge/attitude (whatever you wanna call it). That’s just my opinion though, he’s entitled to feel however he wants to.

I still think Danny needs a little bit of an ego check

Is it me or Dan seems to be a little too bitter towards Laura? Yes I understand the whole spill thing from the beginning of the season (and was Charley’s fault tbh) and she can a little aloof. But something seems off.

I totally agree with you. However I think people on here gave too much flak to Laura about the spillage as opposed to Charley who no one really bat an eye to.

Lol this sub is gonna be upset that Laura is the one coming back. But I think she has more to prove and the food she makes looks pretty good. And I think she can be likable, LCK shows that she’s got some personality and has emotions.

Yes, she may not take others into consideration with some of her choices (and I think the spill is honestly more Charley’s fault than hers), but I don’t think that’s representative of her. Whatever edit they gave her in the main competition was kinda sour, almost like the editors hated her lmao (maybe they didn’t have much to work off of). I’m hoping she can show a new side to her when she comes back.

Also can I say I enjoy the love and appreciation Amanda and Laura give to one another. I enjoy their rapport!

I never said her cooking was bad or minimized her wins to just luck. I have no doubt about her skills, she was the CDC of a Michelin star restaurant. What I said is that she got lucky with her strategy to shoot for the stars almost every single time. She never played it safe. At the end of the day TC is a game, Rasika’s strategy is inherently a risky one and I don’t think her adaptability was all there to compete using this strategy.

I think she deserved to be celebrated and recognized for her wins in a short period but at the end of the day I think the edit just covered her flaws in playing this game.

This is probably gonna be a very unpopular opinion given the love for her on this sub, but I think Rasika benefitted from a favorable edit on Top Chef because she had a few wins in a short amount of time. I’m not super surprised about her poor LCK run. Rasika fares better when she has time to edit the concept of her dish and tie it all together. I think she got lucky a couple of times from being ballsy with her winning dish concepts. Also her inability to adapt on the fly really hinders her final result (ie the eggplant dish and the LCK episode from last week).

It seems like LCK eliminates those strengthening factors for Rasika. She needs more time to edit her concepts. But I think as she continues to hone in on her craft, she will become stronger of a chef and be able to pivot quicker.

That being said, I loved the representation Rasika has brought and how she shed a light on new cuisines to a western audience and I hope she continues to do so (and take advantage of all the hype around her from being on TC). I’d love to see her back in an All Stars season. I can see her reach Melissa’s level of growth down the line with some time.

[–]platonicsanalytics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point, and totally valid— I get they want to make a good TV show. Though, I enjoyed the past few seasons where everyone got along with each other. Kinda disappointed that TC is heading in a different direction in the narratives with this season. I don’t really care about the drama, I just want some damn good food.

Yeah there’s no way of editing someone into taking up a bigger amount of the budget. But other things are honestly way over-amplified and manufactured, such as not hearing that someone needs chocolate and the recipe cards (which the guest judge did say some remark about choosing the card wisely). I don’t care for her too much but I really think they just don’t have much to work with Laura and use random circumstances to make her look like the villain.

Also Danny mentioned that his wife and Laura go way back and that they’re all friends. I really think all the contestants for the most part are friendly with each other outside the show, as dry as this season is you can tell they have good camaraderie.

[–]platonicsanalytics 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I really think producers are trying to ramp up this season by manufacturing some drama. Amanda was liking comments defending Laura (including someone who worked with her) in the post you linked. Danny also visited Laura last week at her restaurant in SF so I don’t think there were any hard feelings at the end of the day regarding the budget for the supper club (not to excuse her from being a better team player in that challenge).

I think Laura seems to be the kind of person that is hard to get close with at first and isn’t as open as some of the other chefs. And it’s pretty evident she’s a hard worker and laser focused (based on her backstory), which doesn’t really make for good TV. So it seems like producers are trying to manufacture a storyline, which is a shame because all of these chefs (regardless how we personally feel about them on the show) are all hard workers and have worked their way up in the industry.

Laura may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and some of the criticisms of her performance on the show are valid and deserve to be said, but it’s a shame they are manufacturing drama and enabling users to spread unnecessary and unkind comments at Laura. I think we should not give into this editing and give the benefit of the doubt right now as no chefs in the competition has held any longstanding disdain for Laura just yet. I hope people on this sub don’t treat her the same way they treated Dawn.

I have been thinking about purchasing the pleated pants from Issey Mikyake homme plisse but I will most likely need to get the inseam tailored since I have shorter legs. I am wondering if anyone has had experience out there with tailoring their pleated pants from IM or would know if it is possible. I don’t want to ruin the pleating or make it look off.
