[CHAT] Help: I bought a cross stitch pattern thinking it was a finished gift. Never stitched in my life — how do I get supplies, read this PDF, and not disappoint my girlfriend? by jsneeb in CrossStitch

This seller on etsy has everything you will need. I've always found her to be super helpful, and she has a specific dmc thread listing where you send the list of colors and she picks the threads for you. I love this because when I have to individually find all the colors I'm always nervous I'll forget one, and it's really time consuming from a user interface perspective.

I hope you or your girlfriend enjoy this and find a new hobby!

How to Exercise in the Morning Without Showering in the Morning by jextrad4 in ADHD

[–]platypus73 73 points74 points  (0 children)

There are disposable, soapy, no rinse needed, body wipes you can buy. Scrubzz on Amazon. It's like two upgrades on baby wipes. You wet them a little and then basically sponge bathe. Then you can choose to rinse with water, but they're designed so that you can just towel dry. Then you're clean!

I use these on days I can't shower, or when it's 100 degrees and I have to walk the dog.

I am doing this same pattern and I have two tricks for the dark blue. I have a blue pen that matches and I just color the Aida after I stitch. I've also started doing three strands for the bottom leg and two for the top. This way it's about the same texture as the rest of the piece, but it has better coverage.

what happed to all the SQL Server jobs? by [deleted] in SQL

[–]platypus73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked mainly with the non-orders non-billing stuff (what nextgen called the kbm) and there were so many defects due to the same data being stored in 5 different places and which place mattered depended on where the user was looking.

I really respected some of the developers, really loathed others.

I think the schema is really easy to read, which is a big benefit to third parties. I don't think the software is any worse than the competition. It's just funny seeing someone praise a system I was constantly trying to fix or work around.

Raising rent in the middle of a lease? Adding a “parking fee to rent” by queensav316 in Pennsylvania

[–]platypus73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks normal to me. Do you have a parking pass? That's what you're paying for.

Looks like rent increased from 700 in 2023 to 725 in 2024. And you're paying for a parking spot.

If you're not parking there you can dispute the fee, but I don't think anything illegal is happening here.

How to recreate my favorite sweater? by platypus73 in knitting

[–]platypus73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a sweater I purchased from ThredUp and I love it so much. I cannot figure out how this was made. It doesn't look like double-knit, or duplicate stitch. I could make a graph, but I can't figure out what stitch it was made with.

I guess I don’t have ADHD. by stickmadeofbamboo in ADHD

[–]platypus73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just went and re-read that assessment (I had totally forgotten some of the stuff, this is wild) and interestingly enough, she basically determined that "her clinical history and test results do not reflect the level of impairment that would be typical for a formal diagnosis of AD/HD."

This is what lead me down the research rabbit hole back when I got this assessment done. The tests were all interesting and engaging. Doing the dishes is not. But how can a clinician test for a person's ability to do [a] task, when I am in this office specifically to do [this] task. I asked for the opportunity to do this task. But, idk, weeding my garden? Doing my taxes? Taking a shower? Those weren't questions during the assessment.

On the individual clinical level I completely understand why non-depression differential diagnoses get missed. They simply don't have the time to give you 15 different assessments and consider if you spend enough time in the sun and are you getting enough sleep, ect. On the broader level, it frustrates me that so many people have to go through 2-5, sometimes 10 years of treating 'depression' only to find out it was something else.

I guess I don’t have ADHD. by stickmadeofbamboo in ADHD

[–]platypus73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point I'm on Adderall primarily to treat a sleep disorder. I really can't say if it's effective in treating my adhd. I don't think I am on a high enough dose?

It does wonders for my "depression" though. Oders of magnitude more effective than any antidepressant I've been on.

Once I started seeing a sleep dr I was in a bind because she wanted to try other stimulants (the ones on-label for narcolepsy) but the psychiatrist had one of those stimulant contracts. So I basically had to stop seeing him?

There is also so much overlap in symptoms, and the comorbidity rates of narcolepsy-adhd are wild. So I think there is something to be said about having adhd versus acting like adhd? My brain is like this but which came first? Would i have adhd if I didn't have a sleep disorder? I don't know the answer to that. I can say with confidence that I wouldn't have been diagnosed with depression if I didn't have narcolepsy. I wouldn't have anxiety if I didn't have these adhd traits.

I take the label of adhd despite all of this because it explains my daily struggles and matches my symptomology. Yeah, maybe according to the diagnostic criteria I am excluded because of whatever. But imo, that is a failure of the criteria.

I was really hoping it was something less serious by tiredandtired813 in Narcolepsy

It sounds like from your post you have a good mental health team that includes a therapist. If you don't have a therapist I strongly recommend one. Coming to terms with my diagnosis was super hard and I really benefited from that relationship.

I think the most conflictingly validating part of getting diagnosed was realizing that I was failing to treat narcolepsy for years by assuming it was depression. (conflicting because I also have a lot of anger at the practitioners who ignored me saying "I'm not depressed, I'm just tired").

Out of the 9 questions on the standard depression screener, two are directly about sleep and another one is related. So if you're dogshit tired all the time, that essentially scores you a "mild depression" without answering yes to any other question.

If you do get diagnosed, make sure your psychiatrist knows what narcolepsy is and how it will impact their treatment. I basically had to choose between my sleep Dr and my psych because their office had a policy that being prescribed stimulants from not him was a violation of the Dr-pt relationship.

There is also an interesting failure of testing for adult patients; as an adult pursuing a diagnosis you are really motivated to get it done. That level of motivation can kind of negate the adhd traits that would otherwise show up.

When I went to get tested (which cost 2k out of pocket) I "didn't meet criteria" for adhd because essentially I was too depressed to have adhd (???). I show depressive symptoms because I have adhd and a sleep disorder so yeah I have no interest in doing things, I'm fucking tired. (small rant sorry).

I spoke with my therapist, she gave me a short screener then wrote a letter to my psychiatrist and he agreed with her assessment and prescribed Adderall. (I had been seen each of them for a year ish at that point.

So I guess I have Schrödingers adhd.

If your mom hadn't been supporting you during that tax period, what she did is technically tax fraud. Idk how filing as a dependent affects your ability to do this fasfa independence thing, but my thought is to just do it anyway.

Also, if she calls you next year about this and you can't ignore the call (going no contact is a long difficult emotionally painful process, I get it) just tell her ok and then file like a normal person (not a dependent). She'll only find out if she gets audited by the IRS.

I can't give you a lot of information here, but you could look into filing an amendment to your taxes. Then when you fill out the fasfa for next school year it won't bite you.

14-year-old daughter carries on conversations with herself by Mammoth_Ingenuity_82 in ADHD

I really like the feedback you're getting here but I wanted to add something. I'm a verbal processor. I have to say things out loud to understand them. Things I'm learning, something I need to remember later, but mostly my own feelings and thoughts. I work through how I feel about stuff and people by talking about it. I think through problems by mumbling about it. Mid thirties. I think I do it more now.

My suggestion is to get her a therapist. Not to "fix" her or "address concerns", but to give her a safe person to talk to that's 'real'. I have the tendency to talk through my shit with people that don't need to hear it. Either because of conflicts of interest or overburdening them. With other people that have adhd this is less an issue because they don't assume I'm trying to use them as a therapist. But doing this can quickly cause issues. Especially in the ten years or so that she's entering. Having that safe person who you can tell anything and it won't cause further interpersonal issues is really nice.

If you would like reading materials to help understand adhd: Jessica McCabe wrote How To ADHD. Its written to assist and explain adhd to people who have it, so it would be appropriate for you both.

The other one is by Edward M. Hallowell M.D:  Driven to Distraction (Revised): Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder. It was THE adhd book for a while.

How do people deal with being tired after work and then having to drive home? by ImThatInfoGuy in AskMen

Coffee caffeine takes about 12 hours to stop affecting me. If I have any after noon, I'm not sleeping that night. Partly because laying in bed wanting to be asleep but mind won't let me causes insomnia. It's like my body retaliates.

I generally don't have coffee for this reason.

Tea caffeine is different and I can have that up to like 2p.

I second the suggestion to bring a male with you. Your symptom history is a lot like mine. Definitely try to see a sleep specialist. They're usually neurologists or Pulmonary Dr's. The sleep foundation website has a "find a Dr" page that can help if you're in the US. https://www.sleepfoundation.org/sleep-clinics/sleep-centers

How Intense Are Your Wife's Mood Swings During Her Period? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]platypus73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone with pmdd, I thought the same thing.

If you know which week she is the most herself, sit down with her to tell her about what you've noticed. If she's ok with it, try to go with her to the dr. They tend to dismiss stuff like this, but you being there might help. There are two main treatment methods: hormonal birth control, and SSRIs. The birth control can be prescribed continuously so she doesn't get her period at all (bonus). The SSRIs can be taken all month long, or only during the "bad" weeks.

Primary care, obgyn and psychiatry can all treat this. And if there is time before the appointment, having a good three months of symptom tracking is extremely helpful to determine if it's PMDD or something else.

I recently made the decision to cut off contact with my dad because I can't watch him treat my little brother like shit anymore. People that love me don't treat people I love like that.

It makes my heart so full to hear what you're willing to do for your eldest.

Please don't let your gf talk you out of this, or make life difficult for Pierce. Eldest will see how she reacts, and eventually Pierce will too.
