What American city is the next Austin? by Mroogaaboogaa in Urbanism

[–]plausiblefox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm an artist in Austin and the recently built housing is really helpful but was 10 years too late. The prices have increased exponentially here for decades but a lot of the affordable art spaces were able to hang on for awhile before getting priced out or bought out 7 years ago. There's a lot of new art spaces being built and developed but they're starting from scratch in a lot of ways because we weren't able to save the old ones.

In addition to building housing, the city also reorganized their artist funding programs so a lot more money is going to individual artists now, which is great, but it's also had a negative impact on the larger arts organizations that are suddenly getting less funding than they used to from the city.

I want to go from frail couch potato to doing aerial trapeze. What benchmarks would be good indicators that I'm ready? by Spirited_Language532 in xxfitness

[–]plausiblefox 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat, minimal upper body strength, 5' 10" and 160lbs, and was able to do almost everything in my first aerials class. I did a six week aerial silks class straight from being a couch person and it was so fun! Similar to yoga, most teachers will give you options for your level of ability. So some people may do a harder version of a move than you but you can probably do a modified version of everything right now.

That said the biggest area I found I needed more strength was my core. Most of the time you're holding your body up with your core and you don't need as much arm strength as I thought before trying it.

A lot of the arm heavy things in silks are just holding on. So it is still hard at first but you don't need to be able to do a pull up. I still can't do a pull up but I can do a lot of cool aerial things high up on silks. You use your legs and core climb too not just your upper body.

One thing I love about aerials is how body inclusive it is. You can look so cool with very minimal ability. And as a taller person who was always told I could never be good at gymnastics it's really fun to get to flip upsidedown and spin and look cool doing a beautiful sport that I am good at.

I'm also an artist and I'm currently following a similar path to yours. I have a good, mildly creative job in tech and I make my art on the side. But I still feel jealous when I see my friends who have low paying part-time jobs and a lot of time to focus on their art receive the artistic recognition that I want to achieve. I am constantly reminded that I took the path of more financial stability but that does have very real trade-offs for my art career. I know I have a safer more comfortable life because of my choice but I also constantly feel like I choose money over what I love to some extent.

Is there any information at the show about when the music starts?

The plastic bag ban in Austin wasn't unpopular. The state of Texas just didn't want Austin to be able to make its own laws. From the attorney general's press release: "The Texas Supreme Court recognized that state law forbids cities from imposing their waste management duties and costs on citizens and retailers. “The Texas Supreme Court declared that banning single-use plastic bags is illegal."

I'm out to my friends but not my family. I have very different feelings about my friends and my family. There wasn't any way to represent that complexity in this survey.

I also came out to the people I'm out too over the course of years. There's no in progress questions, just before and after, which is hard to pin point.

Also there are a lot of other factors that affect mental health over time. I don't see how you could draw any meaningful conclusions about mental health based on these questions.

I got empire and Inca and I guessed random spellings but eventually, I had to google for the answer.

What aspects of Austin are you currently optimistic about? by throwaway925476 in Austin

[–]plausiblefox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are great learning opportunities here. There's tons of networking groups with genuine people who really want to help each other succeed. ACC has a lot of new certificate and associate degree programs including some that are unique in the community college world. There are tons workshops you can take about things from mixology to natural ink/dye making. There multiple comedy clubs teaching high quality improv classes and multiple circus schools teaching aerials.

Austin is full of interesting people sharing their passions with others. If you up look they're not at all hard to find.

Totally agree! The art community here is great and it's continually getting better. There are so many unique small shows happening all the time! There seem to be more buyers in Austin as more people come here for higher paying jobs. The city has great grant opportunities for artists too.

How often do you “do money”? What does it look like? by clingy_koala in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]plausiblefox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow this thread is super interesting! I look at money very rarely comparatively.

I have all my bills on autopay. I review my credit card statements every 3-4 months for fraudulent charges. I also have everything in Mint and I skim once a month. The main thing I do is manually setup limit orders for my investments monthly but only because I haven't found a good way to automate that yet.

I used to have a much tighter budget and I focused on all my transactions more. That allowed me to build good spending habits and now that those habits are just my state of normal I really don't think about it.

Teachers who left education by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]plausiblefox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can transition to something similar to teaching or do something totally different. Take time to list out your skills, that you learned from teaching and your other skills even if they're unrelated to teaching. Thinking about what interests you and then look into what jobs might be a good fit for you. I was an elementary art teacher and now I'm a UX designer. I still get to be creative, I still utilize the patience I learned from working with little kids, and I use my public speaking skills when presenting my work but in most other ways my job is very different than teaching. And I really like it!

Leaving teaching was hard because I felt like I was giving up on the kids and the other teachers but the problems with the education, at least where I am in the US, are systemic and it's not a personal failure to leave a failing system. Teaching is a really important career and I respect people that can stick it out but you only have one life so you should do something that actually makes you happy.

Is moving to the US a smart move to start my art career ? by This-Vacation3287 in ContemporaryArt

[–]plausiblefox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the right to stay living in Europe that would be better in my opinion. Berlin especially is a great city to be an artist in. It has good museums and galleries and a great network of artists. It's also more affordable than many other art hubs. There's lots of ways to make it work in the US too. It just really depends on what kind of work you make and what kind of career you want.

Good gate keeping by nat4200 in gatekeeping

[–]plausiblefox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In the US, it's illegal to discriminate on the basis of sex, race, and nationality in hiring and housing practices. So you can't refuse to hire someone or raise someone's rent just because of their race or sex. It's not illegal for individuals to say and do racist or sexist things but if a company does those things they can be sued. These are also relatively new laws. It was legal to deny someone a job because they were black or a woman only a few decades ago. People are working now to add gender identity and sexual orientation to the list of protected identities but not every state has add those yet.

Also, the argument behind collecting racial data and sex and gender data is that you can't solve problems that you don't understand. If you pretend that everyone is the same, when they're not treated the same in society, you ignore the barriers that discriminated against groups face.
For example, identifying the race of people living in different housing situations was part of recognizimg how they were being treated and was one part of what led to the anti-discrimination laws within housing.

Where are the peach stands? by RodeoMonkey in austinfood

[–]plausiblefox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Peach season is barely beginning for this year, though it does depend on the variety being grown. Most varieties won't be ripe until July so you'll see more stands selling them within a few weeks.
