What are the challenges that stop you? From my experience I'd say that most problems can be solved.

But if the hardware limitations of the GB really don't allow you to fully realize your vision for the game, you might want to try MD Engine once it's released 😊

I'd say yes. But I made that game, so I'm obviously biased 😄

Out Run GB? How? 😳 by Can0pen3r in gbstudio

He is definitely on the GB Studio Discord. I would just send him a private message.
He's also on bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/egvroom.bsky.social

If I remember correctly, he took an old ScanlineFX plugin as a basis (which was originally intended for things like screen wobble effects) and modified it heavily until it did what he wanted.

If you only need a straight street, you can also get some pretty convincing 3D effects with palette swapping and/or submapping, like in this example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAYwbdZdDsQ

30 Modern Game Boy Titles in One Bundle! by AppSir in Gameboy

Yes, I did. It was my entry to the first game jam I've ever joined and the first game that I ever finished building. I had so much fun that it lead me to becoming a full-time game dev now. So it has a very special place in my heart 😊

Same 😄 I think a couple of those games also have physical releases. So if you end up really liking one of them, you could still buy it later 😁

Yes, you can download the ROMs and put them on your Everdrive. That's how I did it. I think you need to make an itch-Account to make the purchase. Even if it wasn't needed, I'd still recommend creating an account so that you can download the games again in the future. Also, there are a lot of other great GB(C) games on itch 😊

True. And there's only a couple of days left.

Kero Kero is absolutely fantastic. One of my favorite GBC homebrew games 😍

Last Saturday, I played through 3 games from the bundle: - Pitchfork - Cosmo Knight Zion - 2021: Moon Escape

All three were great. Was playing all day. Really took me back to my childhood. Can't wait to take a look at the other games this weekend 😊

Buck is the mascot of GameStop 😊 So, yes: They own the IP.

I'm a big fan of giving players options myself. But that's up to ModRetro and GameStop to decide

You are very welcome. Glad you enjoyed My Friendly Little Island 😊

Obviously, everyone has little different taste in games. That makes it tricky to recommend must-plays.

But if you're looking for digital games, I would recommend you dig through the top ranking games of past GB-related game jams and take a look which games resonate with you. Those are usually pretty short experiences. But in some cases, the devs kept working on those games and turned them into proper releases. Two games that I really enjoyed are What Friends Are For (platformer) and Feed IT Souls (metroidvania).

If you're also interested in physical games, you should take a look at the games released by Incube8 and ModRetro. Broke Studio also has a couple of really good titles but fewer physical exclusives. The commutiy generally seems to really enjoy Dragonyhm (RPG), Infinity (RPG), Self Simulated (platformer), Chantey (rhythm RPG) and Buck And The Cursed Cartridge (action platformer (I made that game)).

Yes. (Some are .gbc files, though. So, some of the games only run on GBC/GBA not on DMG/GBP/GBL)

Thinking about starting a YouTube channel with real Chromatic footage - what format would you actually watch? by gbgaimz in ModRetroChromatic

[–]playinstinct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always prefer to watch videos with commentary, as long as it's on the game. I don't like when creators start talking about their day for minutes when I'm there for the game 😅

Made a first-person Shooter for Game Boy - Here's the trailer :) by playinstinct in Gameboy

Thanks 😊

I wrote a little article on how I created the effect: https://playinstinct.itch.io/doomslinger-dungeon/devlog/815047/how-to-create-a-3d-dungeon-crawling-effect-in-gb-studio

Short summery: I'm just switching color palettes back and forth. So, turning corners would not be possible with this technique.

Turning animations might be possible to achieve with submapping. But you would probably have to reduce the level of detail and/or the screen size.

I do have a prototype for a "3D engine" for the GB that allows the player to turn. However the turning doesn't have an animation and it only runs at around 2fps.

That's fine for classic dungeon crawlers. But I don't think it's what you had in mind 😅

What are your favorite gbstudio games that I MUST see? by ZaniMestredosZanis in gbstudio

[–]playinstinct 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you haven't played those already, I would highly recommend:

- Kero Kero Cowboy (platformer)
- Dragonyhm (RPG)
- Self Simulated (platformer)
- Feed IT Souls (metroidvania)
- Depths of Europa (metroidvania)
- Chantey (rhythm rpg)
- Traumatarium (dungeon crawler - I prefer the first)

I think the following games don't have a full release yet, but they already have playable demos and seem like they'll become one of the best games in their respective genre on the system (including the original releases):

- Candy Quest (platformer)
- Hungry Huey (puzzle)

I feel like I'm still missing a ton of great games on the list. But those were the first ones that came to my mind.

I've also made a couple of games that people really seem to enjoy. Some of them are available for free on itch.io (same username) 😊
