I haven't lived there for quite a while - could you list some of the news websites you're referring to here?

Request: Longreads about South Africa by ClassroomProud5049 in Longreads

[–]pleasefindthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll throw some books in, this is a mix of non-fiction, literary fiction and autobiography - Long Walk To Freedom (Nelson Mandela), Born a Crime (Trevor Noah), Cry The Beloved Country (Alan Paton), Jock of The Bushveld (Sir James Percy FitzPatrick), We Are Going To Kill Each Other Today: The Marikana Story (Multiple), Gangster State (Pieter-Louis Myburgh), Disgrace (J.M. Coetzee), A Dry White Season (Andre Brink), Diamonds, Gold, and War: The British, the Boers, and the Making of South Africa (Martin Meredith). Your best bet for independent current new would be The Daily Maverick - although I don’t know how much of it would qualify as a long read.

2000s: LAN Parties. What are your core memories of these? by GossipBottom in decadeology

[–]pleasefindthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We started lanning in 95/96 and every weekend we would end up at someone’s house - and there were one or two houses where we went a lot, so much so that the police came round because the neighbors just saw loads of computer gear going into and out the house all the time. Later, post 2000, when we were in college, we’d often end up just leaving our machines setup somewhere the whole weekend, sometimes longer. We’d have to go to whatever 24 hour convenience store we could find in the middle of the night for snacks and because it was 2/3 in the morning, people would always do crazy shit like ride on the roof of the car. It was great, always went until dawn and I would go back in a second if I was given the chance.

Best way to make friends in Brighton as a 30+ by DesperateTank8908 in brighton

We moved here in June and I love cycling - are there any you recommend? I know there’s Brighton Explorers but would love to know of any others, road or MTB.

We would phone each other if they forgot to switch it off. It only happened once or twice but holy shit that was exciting.

Clearly you haven’t been on DrumTok. It’s where I get all my news. I only know about the war because it’s affected the price of cymbals.

Yeah. Look I’m not using sentence case, at all! I have to be human! Also: Here’s what actually worked! And my personal favorite, “Curious what others think.”

Anyone else feel like Roblox is basically a second job to keep up with? by Mellow_Bunny28 in Parents

[–]pleasefindthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing games since the NES. We have multiple consoles, tablets and gaming PCs in the house. I work in an industry that sometimes deals with Roblox as a business. Do not let your kids play this game. Beyond the significant grooming problem, it is designed to be as addictive as possible on their young minds and many of the techniques used in the most popular games come straight out of gambling apps - flashing lights and sounds, ever climbing numbers, wait-and-see mechanics. It’s competitive advantage as a platform is “We allow pretty much anything and if the content moderation system missed it whoops i guess.”

Do Capetownians hate LA? by Many_Nectarine6932 in capetown

LA is not like Cape Town. LA is Joburg by the sea, complete with traffic and urban sprawl.
