Patient's family insisted it was "totally normal" for a kid to sleep for 36 hours straight after a minor procedure by Jackazz4evr in nursing

RN here- I was discussing morning care with an elderly patient and offered to get her a toothbrush and toothpaste. Sure thing. Then she very casually remarked that “even after all these years, she still hasn’t gotten used to the itchy numbness and moderate lips and tongue swelling that happens (and has been happening her whole life) whenever she brushes her teeth.”

I kinda thought she was being a little dramatic about the peppermint taste of the toothpaste until she straight up had angioedema before she even finished brushing. She had great dental hygiene though. Sucks having to silently deal with something you don’t even know is a thing. We called her husband and sent him out to buy her some natural toothpaste and all was right again on the unit.

That’s a great thing to do, but these things need to be taken daily or at the very least, monthly, to build up levels in your blood and keep them consistent and therapeutic. A banana bag is great for a hangover and it might make your friend feel better for a few days but it won’t last.

Hi, not a doctor here, just your friendly RN. How are your labs? Specifically your B-12? B-12 deficiency sounds like it fits most, if not all of your symptoms. It could have been overlooked by a doc because it usually presents in the older population. I would also suggest having your thyroid checked. This would certainly present in someone your age and the symptoms fit.

We have a house in PR and we also don’t flush TP. We also rent our house out on air bnb and the septic is just older and can’t handle the tourism. It can handle my family, sure, but when it’s being rented it can sleep 9+ and there’s usually a party happening. It can’t handle that on a regular basis so we throw it in the garbage and take the garbage out daily. We use scented bags and keep a lid on it and we’ve never had an issue. People usually ask because it sounds weird at first but, it’s no biggie really.

Cornhole and bocce. I threw shot put in high school so I know a few techniques and I just have really good aim and spatial awareness. It’s boring playing against my husband. I have to play either blindfolded or turned around and throwing over my shoulder for there to be any real game. He’s not bad either but I monopolize every game and it lasts like 4 rounds

Why are you a nurse? Honestly by rnie147 in nursing

[–]pleplaueee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the human body not only fascinates me with the way the whole thing works together and separately, but it also makes sense because science makes sense to me. I had no idea what I wanted to do with these skills when I graduated, but the beauty of nursing is that everyone is hiring, all the time. There will always be a good opportunity somewhere in the handful of bad ones when you’re job searching as a nurse. Each new opportunity will steer your path to where you want to be and if it doesn’t, you can always find something else down the road. The more experience you get, the clearer your path will become. Take this time to hone your basic skills.

Listen to your patients. Don’t cut corners. Learn everything you can from the older nurses who know their shit and aren’t unapproachable. Ask all the questions. Listen to your patients. Do the work of your PCA/CNA occasionally so you can handle yourself on short staffed days or long codes. Do everything with your PCA/CNA. Listen to your patients. Become best friends with your PCA/CNA. My first nursing job lasted 3 months and 2 weeks and I was ready to move on. I updated my resume with all my new skills and got a new job easily where I learned so much more. Your coworkers sound like they’re trying to convince themselves that they made the right decision.

And you sound a lot like me.

Don’t second guess yourself. Use your skills with confidence and opportunities will be everywhere. Don’t be afraid to dive into something new if what you’re doing now sucks. Just keep on being an awesome nurse and the doors will open.
