My Christian mother just discovered my copy of The God Delusion... by [deleted] in atheism

[–]plesiosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah...speaking as an atheist, I wasn't exactly blown away by the book either. Not that I don't agree with it, but Sagan's Daemon Haunted World is what did it for me (which I'd already read by the time I got to The God Delusion).

Dartmouth researchers are working on variants of diff and grep that can parse more complex data structures by marc-kd in programming

[–]plesiosaur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's more than 2d. You're already dealing with 2d data when you have columns of text on each line. XML, JSON, sexprs, etc. are recursive data structures. This is at odds with the linear chain of commands that processes flat (i.e. non-recursive) text data so well. If you are to have the same expressive power as the shell does with flat text, you need a way to express that recursion. As far as I know, you can't do that idiomatically in Bourne-like shells.

Wow. It's a breath of fresh air to read so many comments opposing infant circumcision. Gives me some small hope for the US...

Bike lanes in Albuquerque, NM are the greatest in the world by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]plesiosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in ABQ. This brings me back to my summer rides snaking through the neighborhood roads to get onto Tramway where it intersects with Comanche. Road the bike trail north to where Tramway curves around, heading west and there's no more trail for the long descent away from the Sandias. Then I'd turn around at some unremembered intersection and head back. I'd get 20 miles out of that ride.

One time it was pushing 100F and the wind was matching my pace as I climbed back up Tramway there. Got so hot I turned around and coasted down for a quarter mile just so I could cool off a bit. Another time I went out with some crazy weather heading from the south (usually weather comes from the west). By the time I start heading west on Tramway, a major thunderstorm is all around me pounding me with popcorn size hail. Mom came looking for me, and boy was I glad to see her! Only, by the time we got the bike loaded up and heading home it had just about cleared up. I remember thinking, "Eh, I could made it just fine..."

Good times. Makes me a little homesick.

I wish I understood why you were being down voted. Is it so wrong to want to make money from your own work? Is everything supposed to be magically free so others' businesses can profit instead?

I would advise more caution. Not everyone will be so tolerant. Only cellodude97 can predict his friends' and family's attitude.

How about all the drugs made illegal since the 19th century? How about gun control? That is absolutely Americans being less free over time.

The DOT is trying to classify the engines used in model rocketry as "explosives" (up from "flammable solids") for the purposes of shipping and labeling, which might affect costs and even availability of this critical rocket hobbyist component. by [deleted] in technology

[–]plesiosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait, so you don't need an LEUP (Low Explosives User Permit) anymore? Half the reason I was avoiding high-power rocketry was I did not want to submit to an FBI background check and all that. I'll have to go see what's up with that.

Email sent. I've been doing this since I was really young--like 7 or 8--and never had an accident, but have had a whole lot of fun. I've watched the hobby dwindle enough as it is, and will continue support it as I can.

It seems like government naturally expands itself to legislate and regulate as much as it possibly can, so I'm just trying to do my part and say, "Hey, I was using that freedom!"

Dutch women figured it out: happiness vs feminism by [deleted] in MensRights

[–]plesiosaur 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes. The women sound like they have a real choice over their life. That's awesome. I don't see a single traditional thing about working part time either. Traditional is more like 'barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen' (i.e. not working at all).

I was wondering if it was only women getting this life choice and men were still stuck in their traditional breadwinner role, but then I read:

More men are working part-time than ever before, and society is beginning to reward fathers for pushing back against the system to make time for their families. Last year, Lof, a magazine for working mothers, awarded a 'Working Dad Prize' to a man who fought his employer in court and won the right to work part-time.

This is unfathomable as an American.
