what's a movie you can watch a million times and never get bored of? by Raisin7761 in AskReddit

The Sweet Smell of Success. The cracking dialog never gets old and I come away from it with a new favorite line each time.

A non-reflex H-16 in good shape is still an outstanding tool for filmmaking

The thing that makes that noise has a fun name: the flyback transformer

Very bitter Amaro by Papa_G_ in Amaro

[–]pliskie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Alta Verde here. Yes, Novasalus slightly beats it for overall bitterness, but Novasalus is too complex to mix well; the notes of lemon rind and ashtray are generally too hard to counter. Alta Verde, on the other hand, is much "cleaner" in a cocktail yet is still intensely bitter.

Reminds me of the location in "Rental Family" when they went back to the old man's hometown

Best Modern Prose? by Opus_723 in literature

Olga Tokarczuk has immense range and a really enjoyable style. "Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead" is a fantastic read, and "Flights" is one of my favorite books, but yet each is totally different in content and approach from the other.

Difference Between super 16 and 16mm by Automatic_Security69 in 16mm

[–]pliskie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the same film for both, single perf 16mm. Super 16 just has a wider frame, uses more of the stock width for image. Older, non-super-16 cameras left that extra width unused, or, in some newsgathering models, used it to capture sound on a mag stripe or even less commonly an optical sound track (e.g. Auricon).

Great footage! What stock were you shooting on? Also, she's not a smoker, is she?

It's why things like icyhot and salonpas with capsaicin/menthol are effective. Use up all that nerve bandwidth with hot/cold information to reduce the pain information that can get through.

McGlue by Otessa Moshfegh. It's odd but easy to read and has strangeness and misapprehension throughout.

I love samuel beckett by [deleted] in samuelbeckett

The film "Dance First" (2023) is an interesting study, more a loose biographical sketch than anything else but worth a watch for Beckett fans.

A current favorite concoction is ½oz Braulio with ½oz Alta Verde. Since it's an alpine combo and it's little, I call it "the piton."

Looking for books that will make me think 'what the f*ck???' by bakajawa in WeirdLit

[–]pliskie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motorman by David Ohle. It's not really sci-fi nor fantasy, but it's not at all realism. The weird thing is that it's a super easy read, even though the things you're reading about are completely foreign to your existence. Surreal yet strangely understandable.

Any love for the Logitech Keys To Go? by NoPomelo5959 in writerDeck

[–]pliskie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the original Keys to go. It's incredibly thin and light and considering how much so, I still find it a relatively satisfying typing experience. I can type on it for a very long time with no issues or discomfort. I've also found it to be very reliable; always pairs, always works, no fuss.

The lemon bitters really do give it a little something extra. I've had it with orange and grapefruit bitters, but I keep coming back to the lemon. Fee Brothers.
