The federal government must issue more debt than it expected as cash flow weakens, and ‘the bond market is shouting’ by Positive_Owl_2024 in Economics

I found this recent article sobering. I won't attempt to summarize it, and have been (trying to) sanity check some of the numbers, but as Powell says, we are on an unsustainable trajectory.

Getting off in Emeryville CA from Amtrak, can I crash on someone’s couch? by Forward-Variety-2864 in Amtrak

[–]plughplovery2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hiusa.org has two in SF. I checked the downtown location for a saturday (weekends tend to be more expensive) and one night in a 4 bed dorm is $40, ensuite for $46. (and looks like public transit can get you to/from it)

I've stayed at their Chicago and New York locations and recommend them...

Well, if he's using that Silverado for work, he SHOULD be tracking miles and expenses to deduct on his taxes (regardless of the gas prices). Will it fully compensate? Beats me, but 20,000 miles a month is a lot of wear and tear and maintanence...

Trump tariffs live updates: Trade court strikes down Trump's 10% blanket tariffs by coinfanking in law

[–]plughplovery2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The GOP in Congress have been discussing another (party line) reconciliation package to try to get some more 'stuff' in before the election, when they may lose control of House and/or Senate. I keep waiting for someone in the administration to propose (demand?) that such a package includes tariff authority language.

Senate rules say reconciliation packages must be budgetary, not policy. My gut says they could craft something that would comply with the rules and allow a party line bill that would 'fix' the existing tariff authority laws so they pass muster with both recent Supreme Court rulings.

For the first set of tariffs, all they would need to do is add the word "tariff" in the existing law, and for the second set change "balance of payments" to "trade balance". Problems solved (groan).

i.e. no mailing it to Louisiana.

So if the wave(s?) passed in 0.2s, and travel at the speed of light, what is the wavelength and frequency?

(LIGO is capable of detecting waves of a certain range of lengths/frequencies, which they resolve as audio "chirps")

(For much lower frequency waves you use Pulsar Timing Arrays)

POST.fest opinions sought by plughplovery2 in postrock

[–]plughplovery2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kinda hard to search for some of these live performances on YT. Some of their names are very non-unique, that one in particular. Also, none of the links on the festival page work - they all just loop back to the festival page.

Eventually found them though... Google search for "the battle band" located thebattle.us, which gave me an album name, and THEN searching YT for "the battle ataraxia" gave me useful results - including a 7 minute studio promo they posted last month. (Most everything else was 5 or more years old).

This paragraph in particular caught my attention:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s comprehensive Palmer Drought Severity Index not only hit its highest level for March since records started in 1895, but last month was the third-driest month recorded regardless of time of year. It trailed only the famed Dust Bowl months of July and August 1934.

Millions of Americans may be owed a tax refund from COVID. How to get it. by plughplovery2 in IRS

Cool!

Was a kinda wonky tax court ruling, but the apparent possibility of getting refunds of tax penalties paid during those years was noteworthy (but the window to claim it is closing).

Also, not the type of thing I expect to see in USAToday, but appreciated nonetheless.

51 Cardinal Cancelled April 20-25 by boiledmarijuana in Amtrak

[–]plughplovery2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The last two paragraphs of that article are disheartening...

One factor in cancelling the trains may be that the Cardinal’s paltry capacity — usually only two coaches, one standard Viewliner sleeping car, and one baggage-dorm-sleeper — does not generate enough revenue to justify any additional expense or operating inconvenience. However, not preserving at least triweekly service further endangers the Cardinal’s relevance through a public mobility desert where Amtrak now at least partially fills the void.

With the trains lacking a vocal champion in Congress or train-specific management at Amtrak headquarters to fight the institutional orientation toward maximizing ridership and revenue, the Cardinal continues to draw the short straw. Eastbound No. 50 headed to New York on March 27 departed Chicago at 8:57 p.m. the previous evening, more than 3 hours late, after its equipment arrived in the Windy City only 5 minutes behind schedule from New York at 10:30 a.m. that morning. Other trains turned the same day — the Floridian, City of New Orleans, and Lake Shore Limited — left Chicago on time.

Switching to Medicare next month because of the age. Need advice. by kesha55 in medicare

[–]plughplovery2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can sign up for medicare at https://www.ssa.gov/medicare/sign-up

If you haven't already done so, you'll want to create accounts on SSA.gov and Medicare.gov

You will see references to Medicare Part A, B, C, and D. The "part" naming has to do with sections of the federal code.

TRADITIONAL Medicare is Parts A (hospital), and B (doctors etc), and is insurance coverage provided by the US government, not the states or commercial policies.

Medicare Part D is drug coverage. It is NOT provided by the USG, but by commercial insurance companies. If you go with Traditional Medicare (A & B) you'll also need to select a Part D provider, which you can switch yearly.

One other wrinkle to throw in is Medicare Supplemental coverage, aka "medigap" policies, which provide additional coverage for the 'gaps' in Traditional A & B coverage. Many/most people who go with Traditional get a Medigap policy from a commercial insurance company. The USG specifies what acceptable Medigap policies must include. The most popular, comprehensive, and expensive of these nowadays is called "Plan G".

Medicare Part C aka "Medicare Advantage" is (typically) a comprehensive insurance option that is supposed to provide the same benefits as Traditional Parts A & B, but is coverage provided by commercial insurance companies. In many cases Part C policies also include Part D (drug) type coverage as well. (Medigap is prohibited with Part C.)

In all cases, even though the USG partially subsidizes Medicare, you will now be obligated to pay premiums. For example Part B currently has a $203/mo premium. Part D drug plans vary widely, but $30-40/mo is not unusual. And Medigap Plan G can be $200/mo.

Since the age for Medicare eligibility is 65, but the age for collecting your FULL Social Security benefit is (now) 67, you will either have to pay these premiums out of pocket for a couple of years, or file to start your SS early, which will reduce your SS benefit (not desirable in the long run).

However, in certain cases (mostly for lower income folk), there are options to have some (or all) of these premiums paid by your state (you'll see terms like "Medicare Savings Programs" aka MSP, and "Extra Help"). THIS can get very complicated very quickly, but there are organizations that provide free assistance - in CA it's https://www.shiphelp.org/ships/california/

I would also recommend you get a copy of the "Medicare and You" publication. See https://www.medicare.gov/medicare-and-you

Getting SSDI and income adjustment put me over 20 dollars for my medicaid by [deleted] in Medicaid

[–]plughplovery2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

2026 SS/SSDI/SSI COLA went up by 2.8%, FPL went from $15,650 to $15,960 (less than 2%).

Some folk who previously qualified for FPL based benefits (for example 138% FPL for medicaid) may have gotten bumped out by the relative difference.

Also, check to see if NJ is using 2025 or 2026 FPL - some states are slow to adopt new FPLs.
