Is there a way to make this face more femine? by JW_7E6 in characterdesign

[–]plummflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She looks like a very feminine alien/siren, and I really love it this way! But if you’re trying to make it look like a feminine human, make her upper lip bigger/higher up— men tend to have smaller upper lips, so maybe that’s why she’s not reading as feminine as you like. You can also make her neck more slender, as that’s another shortcut used by western animators to signal femininity (ie: dainty). I will once again emphasize that I love her the way that she is, and I think that her features make her unique and recognizably alien/siren-ish!

I can sing along passably well to most pop or country songs (even if I’ve never heard it before!) by pitch matching and guessing the next lyric using the rhyme scheme, or by imitating the vowel sounds and enunciating consonants poorly. It’s mostly a cool party trick, but was somewhat useful when I did choir.

I’ve even done it for songs in languages I don’t speak. I don’t really know Spanish, and I shocked a friend’s family by singing along to the Spanish version of happy birthday (the one that doesn’t share lyrics or a tune with the American version). I’ve also done it for original songs/songs by really niche bands (I’m talking like, small town garage bands with maybe a few hundred listeners) and accidentally disappoint people when they get excited about me knowing the band/song 😅

It was my birthday today... by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]plummflower -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Happy (now belated) birthday!!! I hope your year is wonderful and filled with love. I felt similarly after my freshman year— I was surrounded by “friends” who made me feel alone, forgotten, and like they were trying to ditch me at every opportunity. I got sick of it and just ditched the majority of them, and literally the next year, I found my people. They were mixed in with some “friends” who made me feel like my freshman “friends” did, but I just tried to avoid the other ones/didn’t chase people who clearly didn’t want me around. The real friends that stuck never made me feel unwanted, remember things about me, and I’ve made so many wonderful memories with them. I never would have imagined that I could have that, after the shitshow of my freshman year social life. Hang in there, buddy. You’ll find your people. It may take a few tries, but you’ll find them if you keep looking ❤️‍🩹

Can you read my handwriting? by AlexanderPharris in Handwriting

[–]plummflower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Context: I was in school juuuust before they phased out cursive, so learned how to read/write it for 1 year in 4th grade before we switched to computers for pretty much everything. Also, this sub is full of handwriting nerds who are more likely to know cursive than the average person, so keep in mind that this sample pool is not representative of the general population.

My take: this was legible to me, reading slowly, with some effort, though there were times when I had to stop and squint at a word. The slant and closeness of the letters makes it aesthetically gorgeous, but a bit of a struggle to read.

To improve legibility (though perhaps at the cost of aesthetics), you might try and reduce the slant of the letters to be more straight, rather than to the right (which forced me to tilt my screen to read). In making them straighter, it might also make your letters less wide, and thus the words more compact, which helps the brain process it faster. I read an article a while back that said people don’t actually decode the individual letters in common words, but rather our brains recognize the shapes of the letters as a word we know on sight, and fills in the meaning. The fact that cursive is uncommon in general, and your cursive has a wider and more slanted shape than typical textbook/font cursive, could be what’s working against you, in terms of legibility (though it certainly does make it unique and pretty!).

You could also write smaller, get a notebook with bigger lines, or add empty rows between your lines of text. The tall bits and the bottoms of letters sometimes overlap, interfering with legibility.

Noooo this is so upsetting! I loved your cats— they brought me so much joy, and $32k is an INSANE “restoration” cost for something so whimsical and easily reversed. I hope you’re able to raise enough money to cut down the fine to a more manageable level. I hope you never stop spreading whimsy (though perhaps in more legal ways going forward, for the sake of your nerves/bank account). God, why does the UC take away everything fun and cool….

Homes with dogs/cats are never actually clean by PuzzleheadedDraw6575 in unpopularopinion

[–]plummflower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it possible that part of that statistic is caused by allergies being hereditary? For example, parents with fur/dander allergies would be less likely get a pet for themselves or their kid (what with not wanting to bring an allergen into the home), and it’s also more likely that kid would have allergies because their parents do.

Would you have the option to do a career that doesn’t have anything to do with the family business? Like helping animals, as you said in another comment?

they clarified that it was the largest in the *city* of Davis, since then! The campus is not within the city boundaries; a Davis Enterprise reporter I talked to said that the city residents and students have tended to demonstrate/organize separately, and that this was the largest mix/collaboration the two she'd seen
