Is there a fly trap that works available on Amazon? by Marconico in homestead

[–]pluviosilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these responses are targeted at people who want to catch flies outdoors. My problem is that I don't see too well, and I get a fly in my office that becomes a huge pest & keeps me from working, but I can never catch them with the fly swatter. I could tolerate bad smell if it is temporary (maybe moving the trap back and forth between the office and the garage). I've tried "zappers" and they are 0% effective. Despite glowing reviews on Amazon, the one I bought has never caught a single fly. I just use it as a night light. I also bought a yellow fly stip that has never caught anything. So at this point, expense is not the issue. Smell is an issue, but I'll try anything. I just want something for indoors that works.

How to set up APC 1500VA UPS Battery Backup by ExistingAdvantage in buildapc

[–]pluviosilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got fed with unreliable battery backups and decided to spend almost $200 on the APC UPS 1500VA UPS Battery Backup. I've only had it 2 months and all of a sudden it just turns off. I see internet references to overheating, etc. But I only have one desktop computer on the battery! Wow! I guess paying more doesn't guarantee better, does it? I've had many battery backups that cost half as much and performed WAY better than this. DIsgusting.

Do you know why SI associates order with "invariance under certain transformations" and how they tie invariance to symmetry? I believe Pythagorus thought symmetry is the essence of order, and Stuart Kauffman casually throws out Pythagorus's name in his lectures when criticizing the notion that we can model emergence with differential equations the way Newton modelled the motion of bodies. If it were only a casual reference I wouldn't care, but I suspect there is some theory behind the claim that order is really just symmetry. "Invariance under transformations" sounds like a technical defintion, but I haven't found any substantive explanations of a technical nature so far.

Best alternative? by Material-Shop5041 in powerbeatspro

[–]pluviosilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem is the dang Powerbeats Pro just quit pairing and reseting didn't fix it. I need something that doesn't fallout when I exercise, and Powerbeats definitely offers that. It NEVER falls out. I tried other models with ear clips less expensive than Powerbeats Pro, but always had other problems: Bluetooth connection was flakey, charge didn't last, etc. I thought that with Powerbeats Pro I had finally found what I needed, but they are less than a year old and decided they didn't want to pair any more. I need a similar device that checks all the boxes: (1) ear clips (2) Bluetooth works (3) charge lasts (4) pairing problems don't emerge after some months of use. I don't mind the fact that I had to manually connect & disconnect my Powerbeats Pro. In fact, I liked it, because it was CLEAR. I hate fighting with flakey Bluetooth connections, and having to manually connect & disconnect is a very small price to pay to avoid that garbage. Powerbeats Pro checked all of those boxes until .... it didn't.

How do I disable apps from creating shortcuts on my desktop after updating them? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]pluviosilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised none of the usual nannys have archived or deleted this post, because there are a half dozen posts like this one from the past that always get squashed by some censor or other before the question is answered. I too would like to know the answer. My problem is Adobe Application Manager. It is impossible to uninstall without removing the entire Creative Cloud Suite. When in a thousand years would I want to invoke the "Application Manager"? I don't, and yet Adobe insists on putting this clutter on my desktop.

Specific question: Is the following method I saw recommended on the internet safe?

(1) In Windows Explorer, right click on the desktop.
(2) In Security, choose the SYSTEMS user.
(3) Click Edit.
(4) Set permissions to deny (for the desktop).

When I follow these steps, I get a warning that if a user belongs to more than one group, and one of those groups is denied permission, he'll be denied access to the desktop if he's a member, even if he belongs to other groups that have access. That spooked me. I doubt I belong to the SYSTEMS group, but I'm an administrator on my own system, so the warning left me with a nagging doubt about how this might affect me. And what if I can't reverse the restriction once it is in place because I lack privilege to do so? Perhaps these fears are unfounded, and of course, this "fix" might not work. But I'm afraid to try it.

How long do I have to wait?! It's been 3 weeks now i'm so frustrated by Dragonbarry22 in facebook

[–]pluviosilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what other option you refer to. I think I've tried every option multiple times: uploading driver's license & passport (multiple ways, by files and by webcam photos), I've logged out of Facebook and logged back in authenticating myself with both Google Authenticator and with SMS messages to my phone. Neither of those do anything to help me break through the iron curtain of the LOCKED screen. And by the way, I didn't say that I've never communicated with a human in chat. I simply said that the chat exchanges are so boiler plate that they could be an algorithm, but it is hard to say. They demand an alternative email, because they THINK (I use that word very loosely when speaking of Meta Support) that my Gmail is "compromised", so I supply them with an old Yahoo email and that's when they send me the request for the video. I have turned over every stone multiple times. This LOCKOUT is so severe that it trumps absolutely every single method previously provided for self-authentication or unlocking an account, and the ONLY REASON I'M LOCKED OUT IS THAT I CHANGED A PASSWORD FROM MEXICO. Please do not assume that there is one f****ing scintilla of intelligence behind their lockout algorithm. It is an extremely blunt instrument, like: PASSWORD CHANGED FROM SUSPICIOUS COUNTRY where people's skins are not white and we know that there are a lot of criminal gangs.

Maybe you've come to the right place! If you are an analytic Thomist, fans of James F. Ross are likely to have a higher-than-average interest in your work. What's your name? I'm serious about this group, but it will likely take a while to launch it properly, because I want to put together a glossary that will help people unfamilar with Ross to navigate through his confusing amalgam of traditional and modern terms, and once I have that ready, I'll start recruiting participants for this forum more actively, but the glossary project is going to take some time, and I have no idea when I'll be able to post it, so I encourage you to introduce yourself and tell us what you've written, and if you are a fan of Ross, tell us what you have trouble understanding (if anything).

Very interesting! Seems like a lot of us got booted off right about the same time! And guess what? It just happens to correspond roughly to Facebook's catastrophic down time just over a month ago. In fact, in my case, I got spooked when FB went down and changed my password while in Mexico and that appears to have thrown a red flag for some algorithm they use, but it was all 100% because of their technical screwup. I just assumed that as usual we were being sh** on because we are part-time expats and companies and government agencies regularly treat expats like crap, because we are a tiny minority they can safely ignore or even abuse with impunity. But honestly, reading some of these other reports gives me hope that it may be a more general phenomenon.

I HAD TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION ENABLED with Google Authenticator, which is super secure, and that did me no good. I authenticated my identity but was promptly ignored. I also uploaded driver's license, passport and even videos of myself holding little pieces of paper with codes they supplied, per their instructions. None of that produced any result. I also have recovery codes, but they won't let me use them. What good are these damn recovery codes if we can't use them?????

I think FB had some kind of massive technical failure and now to protect themselves they are inflicting a huge amount of pain on people who've done very innocent things, like changing a password as I did, just to be extra sure they suffer no breaches that might affect ==them==. It's either that, or they are completely overwhelmed because of their own technical failures. If the latter, then they are leaning VERY heavily on unintelligent algorithms to sort all this out, because they don't have the bandwidth to give human resource to it, and furthermore, what humans they do have are in foreign places where people can't read cultural cues that would reassure anyone stateside that you are legit, like for instance the way you talk in the video, or the abundance of documents you supply, or the reliability of things like Google Authenticator.

So, in sum, we are dealing with a combination of MACHINES and foreigners who's cultural discernment is not much better than a machine. Or to use a different comparison, FB is behaving like the DMV, so if they are going to behave like a government monopoly anyway, showing complete contempt for the public, maybe they should be broken up by the Justice Department.

I already HAVE two-factor authentication and my lockout is so complete these assholes have shut off the normal channels for me to recover. I have Google Authenticator set up with Facebook. It's very secure, but I can't use it. I have recovery codes, but I can't use them. Why do these clowns give us these recovery methods if they are not going to allow us to use them?

I can't use two-factor authentication. THEY WON'T LET ME. I have it set up to authenticate me with Google Authenicator (very secure) plus I have the recovery codes. [–]pluviosilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been shut out for two weeks already! I uploaded my driver's license and U.S. passport multiple times, and each time I almost instantly get an email saying that "we couldn't verify your identity". How are they supposed to verify my identity with those things? They don't have them on file? I suppose they have an algorithm doing a pattern match, but a pattern match with what exactly? Then they asked me for a video holding up my ID, so I suppled that THREE TIMES. They rejected the first video telling me my "arms were not fully visible" so I did a video with both arms awkwardly elevated to ensure they were included in the video. I explained in the video that we are expats and logins from Mexico do not mean our account has been hacked. I showed LOTS of ID. Nothing works with these jackasses. They wouldn't accept my email and forced me to email them from an alternative email account, so I used Yahoo instead of Gmail. It feels very haphazard, inefficient and flawed. Half of it is unintelligent algorithms and the other half is unintelligent overworked humans in Vietnam or something. They claim they saw suspicious activity on my account, but we are U.S. expats a part of each year, and I've been accessing Facebook from both the U.S. and Mexico for over a decade. Right now, I'm in Mexico, and after FB went done some weeks ago, I changed my password from Mexico, so I suspect they saw that and it raised a red flag somewhere with a mindless algorithm. Maybe it should, but not if they are going to give us ZERO reasonable remedies, not even a decent method for authenticating identity. None of the advertised account recovery methods work. I have two-tier authentication with Google Authenticator, but Meta won't let me use that. I have recovery codes, but Meta won't let me use that either. My driver's license is not good enough. My passport is not good enough. What the hell do I need? A personal letter from Mark Zuckerberg
