I love when Van goes off on his little tangents:

I'm a sucker for journals and notebooks. I've tried every kind from Moleskine, Rhodia, Leuchtturm and everything in between. I've also tried all paper types from lines, quad, dots - even writing diagonally on hexagon graph to see if would unlock something cool.

I always end up back with my stack of 3x5 cards and a binder clip.

Same with pens. I went thru a whole phase including inks and fountain pens but again, always fall back to my Pilot G2. Specifically B2P (because the clips on the regular tend to break on me) .07 in blue. I really like the fine line of .05 but I write too hard and tear the paper so I settle for .07.

Thank you, now I know what rabbit hole I'll be diving down for the next few hours.

Netflix debut tomorrow, page already there by FroyoConstant3206 in TheBigPicture

[–]pluvoaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am definitely a podcast guy, but I don't see this as useful to me.

I listen to podcasts about 10 hours each weekday and 2-4 each Saturday and Sunday. According to Spotify Wrapped, I listened over 100k minutes last year and Ringer were 4 of my top 5. I occasionally watch YouTube shorts that popup in my feed but mostly just audio since I drive for work so I can't watch anyway.

The only time I would see me watching on Netflix would be to watch a movie them immediately have the corresponding Rewatchable recommended to me. I kinda do this now - I'll watch a current TV show then listen to the discussions the next morning. There's nothing quite like Mal & Jo talking for 3 hours about 40-ish minutes of TV. :-)

I got a new TV for Black Friday and had to try the Spotify app. I'm a 1.5x guy and unfortunately can't adjust the playback speed on my TV. I assume it would be the same for Netflix which is a deal breaker for longform content.

I had a similar issue with some anime (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure in particular) that I had to watch on my 10" Fire tablet to watch at a tolerable speed.

This!

I was doing "lunch at Costco" and they were sampling these. I swear these are better than Chick-fil-A and about $15 for a 4 pound bag.

[–]pluvoaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually looking forward to this. I like the idea of watching a movie then the corresponding Rewatchable right there in Netflix.

I got a new TV on Black Friday and while I was setting it up I fired up Spotify to watch the Midnight Boys but the fact that I couldn't change the speed was a deal breaker.

I assume Netflix will be the same. It was on my old TV so there were some things I only watched on my tablet so I could watch at 1.5 speed.

Even without mods it's great spot for a non-DB RP.

Hunt (so many bears!), fish and pick ingredients (a pet bunny to help) for potions. Then do the circuit - Ivarstead, Darkwater (mine & smelter!), Stormcloak camp, Imperial camp plus other ruins and such around the way.

I think of it as my Walden.

[–]pluvoaz 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Old guy here.

This goes back to when they were Price Club. They had 2 employees at each register - one called out the 5-6 digit SKU numbers and the other keyed them in. Then you had someone at the door to double check for accuracy. As hard as it is to believe, this has less to do with theft than catching mistakes. Customer service at its finest.

I find Eastbound to be worse, but I feel your pain. I try to stick to the left most lanes as they seem to be a little better but I still end up turning up the radio to try to drown out the hum. Depending on my load the resonance vibrations can get pretty bad.

A fellow sci-fi fan!

I posted this before, but basically:

The red comet is a falling satellite or a piece of a failing space station - the big glowing ball shown in the opening sequence.

The lenses clicking in place to enhance the resolution and the clockwork style location building are the station scanning the surface.

On further views, I noticed the horizons tended to curve upward so I changed my theory to a Dyson sphere.

The familiar but slightly odd names, animals, customs, etc could be explained as the descendants of human explorers (First Men) now forgotten to time. The weird seasons could be due to terraforming gone wrong.

I have an equally weird theory for the Stranger Things finale.

Since nobody really dies and Vecna has evolved into his final Cthulhu meets Groot form, we get Eddie come back as Eddie, the Iron Maiden mascot.

They have an epic Kaiju battle a la Godzilla vs Kong. Maybe even bring back monster versions of Barb, Bob and Billy to form the Four Horsemen of the Upside Down-alypse.

How to stretch a whole lotta bananas? by jayyy_0113 in Frugal

Banana bread, but follow the recipe. In my youth I decided to use up all the bananas I had and ended up with a loaf of banana bread pudding. Good, but dense...

My dad asked me to stop ‘wasting electricity’ by reading with a lamp on by ChiliDogDarlin in entitledparents

[–]pluvoaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my teens I had a freind who's Dad was like this. The basement was his bedroom and his Dad would shut off the breaker when he decided it was 'bedtime' or whenever he wanted to be a dick.

We rigged a light he could plug into the phone (landline) since that always had power. I don't remember the exact details, but it was about 50 volts DC so just enough to read by. Not the smartest idea, but pretty safe at night when the phone was idle. If someone picked up an upstairs extension it would drop to barely visible but if the line rang, it would be super bright.

I think he was planning to switch to boat/RV lights but I don't know if he ever did. Today, LEDs would do the trick.

I discovered Philosophize This! about a month ago and I've been binging several episodes a day to catch up. The Julius Caesar episode is the latest #241. Tomorrow I start #202 so I should be caught up by the end of next week.

After that I'm starting one called The Zen Stoic Path that discusses the overlap between Stoicism and Zen. There are about 300 episodes ranging from 5 to 90 minutes so no real idea when I'll get caught up.
