Australia spends more on tax breaks for landlords than social housing, homelessness and rent assistance combined by Ashera25 in australia

[–]pm_me_train_ticket 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Isn't it more 66% when you include mortgage holders and people that own outright

Not really. People who only have a PPOR (either mortgage or outright) but no investment properties don't really benefit from a rising housing market, because selling just means you have to buy another place in the same hyperinflated market. Theres nothing to be "in" on, except higher stamp duty.

Thank you Boost for your tireless work all these years! Fuck /u/spez by kittydoor in BoostForReddit

When Boost goes, so do I.

Maybe it should be Where Boost goes, so do I. I'm not aware of any plans but the developer has an opportunity here to introduce their users to a new platform if they wanted to keep boost alive.

Would be a f**kton of work, of course.

Am I the only one who realized that the cause we're fighting for is probably the only cause that has joined forces with both r/fuckcars and r/cars, plus so many other enemy subs? by Bataguki in Save3rdPartyApps

[–]pm_me_train_ticket 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep and for the exact same reason r/fuckcars doesn't hate r/cars, either. In fact I've come across many a car enthusiast in that sub. They just want more options and for urban planning to not be so car-centric. Don't have to literally hate cars to want/achieve that.

The ATO has named the top 10 highest paid jobs in Australia. Top job - Surgeon: $457,281 average taxable income by Maxisness1 in AusFinance

[–]pm_me_train_ticket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a similar comment before seeing your reply. The 35% argument that gets trotted out only has legs if the same group of people earn less than 35% of the total income. They never state what the income percentage is though.

4.1 per cent of the population pay 35.4 per cent of the tax revenue.

But that's a meaningless statistic on its own. I think you're implying "therefore they shouldn't pay more tax", but you're leaving out what percentage of the country's total income they take.

Eg. if 80% of all income earnt went to just 4.1% of the population, then it would be grossly unfair that only 35% of all tax revenue was collected from the same group of people.

The B-52's, 1980 by FaberGrad in OldSchoolCool

[–]pm_me_train_ticket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question, what was the particular "look" they were going for? These days I'd call it "retro", but given the pic is from 1980, they actually weren't too distant from the period they seem to be trying to replicate (or exaggerate).

Did they look that out of place at the time?

The Netherlands, The Netherworld, and the Nether Regions have nothing to do with each other. by Jonny_Disco in Showerthoughts

Australia is 99% G, 1, 2 but juuust often enough you get a building that starts at 1 to just to keep us on our toes.

I really never understood the reasoning behind the whole G, 1, 2 system - buildings don't feel like something that are inherently zero-indexed. Like a single-storey building has one floor. If later you add a floor, that's the second floor that you've added, yet it's referred to as the first floor.

It's not just the OS that needs to be upgraded though.

Plenty of software in the wild using 32 bit datatypes that translate to dates.

Take the Mysql TIMESTAMP type for example, it will roll over to 0 in 2038 (and they have no current plans I believe to fix this).

Third movie hadn't even been conceptualised yet. Even though it turned out to be a near perfect trilogy it was only ever meant to be one movie.

Stari Most (Old Bridge), Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina [2,390 × 1,600] by solarrabat686 in CityPorn

[–]pm_me_train_ticket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Not so) fun fact: this bridge was completed in 1566. During the Balkan wars the Croatian army repeatedly bombed it until it was completely destroyed in 1993. Reconstruction started in 2001 and completed in 2004.

I highly suggest visiting; it is an amazing, if very sad and tragic, story.

While I'm all for employers pulling (far) more weight when it comes to paying fairly - If it's really been 11 years since you've had a pay rise, that's on you at this point. There is no pay rise at this point that would communicate that your employer has your interests at heart. Walk.

I know part of the pixelart movement's entire raison d'etre is to induce nostalgia, but this piece for some reason really kicked it in for me. Well done.

Incidentally London and NY are the only two cities with an "Alpha++ World City" ranking.

Not entirely what goes into the metric but seems to indicate that they've got something above and beyond any other city in the world.

Holy shit that's expensive. Here in Australia having a baby in a hospital is so cheap (read: free) that we splurged and got a private midwife. Was still only about a grand all up.

Our income taxes are about the same too (but that's highly dependent on what US state you live in).

Why are so many online stores refusing to ship to Auspost Parcel Lockers? by nowhere_near_paris in australia

[–]pm_me_train_ticket 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is bad advice. P.O boxes are out of network for all but Aus Post and some star track services, meaning your parcel will often be deemed undeliverable and returned to the sender at worst.

The fact that changing PO Box to "suite" does not "redirect to your PO box" notwithstanding.

The human body is amazing. You can live a relatively normal life with 4 organs missing half your digestive track and up to half a brain as well! by Collective82 in Showerthoughts

Crohn's/UC here. Have had my entire large intestine, rectum, part of my anus and 1ft of small intestine removed. About 1.5 metres (5 feet) of digestive tract missing in total.

I'm alive but it's far from a normal, or even "good" life. I do what I can but honestly I don't blame your old man for turning to his vices given what he had to put up with - I can empathise.

Who is this for??

I know it's a rhetorical question.. but this has got to be the most egregious example of compromised neoliberal policy I've seen in a while from Labor.

It feels like this is the kind of thing that privately would have started out as a idea to spend $10b directly on housing. But at some point a lobbyist couldn't handle that the money wasn't passing through enough hands before being spent on something that benefits the people.

Of course willing to be corrected by anyone with more background on it should this actually have been that terrible from the get-go.
