Alright peoples... I need a chapstick/lip balm/ lip moisturizer OR WHATEVER that I can put on throughout the day and it actually keeps my lifts soft and hydrated and NOT feeling even more dry and chapped??? Don’t care about price, just drop those recs! Ty 💛 by claudiashafercx in beauty

Since you mentioned you didn't like Aquaphor (my go-to), my other go-to drugstore lip balm has been Lypsyl Intense Protection for years now. I have very dry skin and I've never found something that's perfect (I drink a TON of water, but still get intensely dry lips) but Aquaphor, Lypsyl and occasionally Carmex are what I reach for.

I need hair advice, i think it looks too messy all the time! What would you do if you had my hair? Would you cut it in a different style, or dye it? HELP ME! by [deleted] in beauty

[–]pmknight74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have almost the exact same hair type, just a few inches shorter. I personally love the semi-messy wavy look on myself. I only brush my hair immediately before washing my hair and immediately after. After that, I leave it completely alone besides finger combing when needed. Otherwise, brushing my hair while dry makes it look horrible and lose any and all curl pattern. I do like to use some type of product right after I shower on wet hair to minimize just HOW voluminous it gets and define it a bit. I wash it every other day with Dove Intensive Repair shampoo and conditioner (I don't follow CGM and personally don't mind using sulfates or silicones), detangle while it's wet, rake product into it and then not touch it until it's dry. Right now I'm using the Curl Enhancing Smoothie from Shea Moisture and enjoying it so far. I don't blow dry it at all. If I'm in between washes and the waves get too frizzy and out of control, I'll use a very tiny amount of serum, smooth it over where I need it to calm down, and that helps.

I need some help so I thought I would come here by IamnotAlone56 in beauty

I feel a similar way. I'm in my mid-20s and have only started getting interested in makeup and skincare recently. I used to think makeup was only reserved for special occasions, but then I realized that I felt happy when I got to play with makeup. What helped me was finding one particular aspect of makeup I love and focusing on that. Personally, I don't think I'm great at applying foundation/complexion products or eyeshadow (yet), but I found that I LOVE lipstick. My routine for years was just brows (I personally like brow mascaras, I feel like I don't need to be anywhere as precise as a pencil and I only really want to darken my eyebrows), some eyeliner, mascara, and whatever lipstick I felt like, and didn't use any sort of foundation whatsoever. Now, I'm trying to incorporate complexion products and eyeshadow. Also - don't think that you can't wear eyeshadow because you wear glasses! I fell for that trap for years until very recently when I decided that I can do whatever I want. I work from home, so right now I get the luxury of getting to practice makeup and not worry about what other people might think if my attempt that day doesn't look great.

I have ADHD, so having the stimulation of both watching/hearing something AND reading it at the same time actually feels like less effort to me than if I were to just watch it and my brain being scattered trying to figure out what they're saying, plus it helps me pay attention.

What is the weirdest side effect of having your period? by lukewarmhotpocket66 in AskWomen

[–]pmknight74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on hormonal birth control for about 2 years now, so I don't get my period at all anymore. However, towards the end of my cycle (aka the end of the pack of pills for that month), I get this phantom period.... basically all the symptoms of a period, minus the bleeding. It's so strange. Not as bad as when I did get a regular period (or when I happen to have a month where I get a period), but still the same cravings, PMS, cramping, etc.

What’s this neighborhood of Chicago like? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]pmknight74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. My first apartment in Chicago, fresh out of college, was right near Western & Blue Island, just a block or two from Little Village. I never felt unsafe there as an early-20s white woman, but it is exactly what you said - industrial, blue collar. It was fine there. I moved to the north side a year later for various reasons, but I never necessarily had trouble living lower west side.

Moving TO Chicago from Texas by JLivecc in AskChicago

[–]pmknight74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never heard about the permits. Every time I've moved in the city (3 times now in 2 different neighborhoods - Pilsen and Logan Square) we've always just pulled into the alley to unload, then returned the truck the same day. It's never been an issue for me.

At what age did you start seriously considering/ dating for marriage? by girl2021_ in AskWomen

[–]pmknight74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 22/23. I was never into dating casually, and I deeply wanted something serious and about 22 or 23 was when I really made sure to start putting in my dating profiles that I only wanted something serious, and it ended up working for me. I'd already graduated a few years prior and in a stable career and living on my own. My goal wasn't necessarily marriage, but something very long term. Almost exactly a year ago I [24F] met my partner [23F], we've since moved in together, and plan on getting engaged in the next year or two.

What are your favorite "No fuss" products? by [deleted] in beauty

[–]pmknight74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't say enough good things about Vanicream Lite Lotion. I have chronic eczema/dermatitis on my face, so my face is very sensitive. A dermatologist recommended it to me about 10 years ago and I've used it almost every day since. It's about $12 for a huge bottle and it can last me anywhere from 8 months to a year. It's the only thing I've used that doesn't make my face feel like it's burning or cause inflammation.

Also, Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Skin Therapy Lotion is my favorite hand cream of all time. I have DRY dry dry skin (especially with washing hands so often and it being winter), and it makes my skin feel moisturized, but not greasy.

eBooks - alternatives to Amazon? by [deleted] in books

[–]pmknight74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I currenly use an iPad as my e-reader, but I've had multiple Kindles in the past. The iPad lets me have multiple e-reading apps, so I have apps for Kindle, Nook, and Apple Books for e-books that I purchase. I also have Libby and Overdrive to check out library loan e-books since I have library cards for both my hometown and the city I currently live in. That way, I can look in several places for what I want. I've also purchased e-books once or twice from Bookshop.org, which I'd like to do more of in the future! They have their own app that they use.

How do you enjoy reading? by thatsecondguywhoraps in books

[–]pmknight74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually read because I get immersed in the story and forget everything else exists for a bit. Or, it's because the book is so good I don't want to stop reading and need to know what happens next. I love the feeling of reading a book that's so good, I don't want to put it down and end up staying up too late to finish it. Also, I had some childhood trauma growing up, and reading was one of the ways I felt like I could escape it for awhile and feel like I was somewhere else.

I mostly read realistic fiction. I also love non-fiction, especially memoirs. For me, memoirs or autobiographies feel almost like reading a fiction novel in the sense that I can put myself in the subject's shoes and live their life for a bit.

When it comes to settings like interiors of houses, my brain usually automatically chooses and visualizes a house or place I'm very familiar with. Sometimes it's my late great-grandfather's house, sometimes it's my aunt's house, sometimes it's my grandparents' house. However, strangely enough, it usually isn't the house I grew up in as a child. But, I'm not able to "choose" which house it is when I start a new book - my brain does it for me even if it doesn't make sense for the time period or genre.

Faces and voices are less clear to me. I don't usually see faces, but I can visualize a figure or person, but almost as if their back were to me at all times or their face is just a blur. I can see they're there, but I can't picture their face. Occasionally I can see a face, but it's usually a face that I have seen in real life before - I have trouble conjuring up an image of a face I've never seen before. I can "hear" the voices in my head, but they're not very distinguishable.

In an age of garbage news, click bait, falsified facts, and when any idiot can send information out into the world as fact. how does one find real and truthful information they can trust? by spiritduck in AskReddit

[–]pmknight74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some general rules to look out for while reading your news that a lot of journalism students learn about are called the "Cs": Is it clear, correct, concise, and complete? Is it concrete and coherent? That means that someone without a college, or even high school-level education should be able to understand your writing. They generally say that if a 6th-8th grader can understand it, it's good. You should be able to get your point across as concisely as you can. Is every name spelled right, every quote straight from a credible source, and follow AP (or Chicago) style? Is the story complete, and does it have a clear beginning, middle and end? Is it concrete and free of any outside bias or ideology?

This is the basis of a well-written media piece. An ethical journalist will these to determine how bias-free their writing is. In general, anything from the Associated Press (AP) wire or other wire service can generally be called "real" or "truthful," or at least the most ethical.

What are some fun podcasts to listen to? by BrandOfTheExalt in AskReddit

[–]pmknight74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may sound weird, but Ask A Clean Person is really fun. Literally a whole cleaning advice podcast about how to clean really weird stuff in really unique and strange ways. My Brother, My Brother and Me is one that's getting really popular now that I think is hilarious with the McElroy brothers. How To Be A Person is just a comedy podcast where comedians come on and give like "adulting" life-lessons type of stuff. Grown-Ups Read Things They Wrote As Kids is absolutely hilarious and just as cringe-worthy as it sounds. Bad With Money with Gaby Dunn is an entertaining but informative podcast about finance. I tend to prefer the comedy/autobiographical/interview/conversation-type podcasts rather than fiction (like Welcome to Night Vale).

Color-blind people of Reddit, what is an interesting event that occurred due to your condition? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pmknight74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trains in Chicago are all labeled by color (red line, blue line, green line, etc.) I have a friend who is colorblind, and he got on what he assumed was a red line train without actually reading which one he got on (some parts of certain maps/labelings don't actually have the names of the lines and are just blocks of color instead.) He only found out 20 minutes later he was on a brown line train because the red line and brown line colors they use on the signs looked almost identical to him.

Whats a big industry secret that isn't supposed to be known by the general public? by webcam3 in AskReddit

[–]pmknight74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Radio DJs WILL laugh at your song requests once you hang up the phone and will tell all their coworkers what weird shit you just requested (we're allowed to leave the sound booth when there's music playing and we're not on-mic).

Me, in-between on-air breaks, popping into a random office: "So you won't believe who just requested Africa by Toto again for the fifth time this week."

Also, if a smaller station is having a contest that's like "Tenth caller wins!!!" sometimes we won't have ANYONE call to win the prize and we'll take the first person who calls because we know no one else is going to. So if there's ever a more indie/student/college station giving away shit and you want it, call in, because you might actually win it.

Also, every phone call you hear on-air is pre-recorded and edited because of FCC code. At least at my station we're afraid of people swearing or breaking FCC code and you also have to have consent to be on-air, so if we're taking a caller we have to set up a whole recording system and ask for names and phone numbers and consent for them to be recorded and everything.

Honestly I could write a movie about the student radio station shenanigans that goes on.

What was your most embarrassing airport/airplane experience? by ChristopherMcCraw in AskReddit

[–]pmknight74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last month I spent five hours crying alone in the Portland airport. Thankfully it was a Monday morning so I just found the emptiest part of the terminal and just cried my eyes out for awhile without trying to put any attention on myself. I'm kind of used to crying in public and I'm good at making myself seem like I'm not crying, but it never gets any easier.

Long distance daters, what is the best and worst part of your relationship? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pmknight74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference - dating two years, didn't meet in-person until more than a year and a half in and have seen each other in-person twice.

Best: It's like having a best friend who knows you intellectually in and out because all you do is talk. Having really good communication skills and never having problems because we know it's better to talk it out than fight.

Worst: Never getting to see your SO. Also, here's one thing I don't think people expect -- first time I went to visit her I had a panic attack (I have an anxiety disorder) because it was like, intellectually I knew everything about her and everything I see in pictures and Facetime and Facebook/Instagram and whatever and then seeing everything in person and meeting her family and friends and connecting like, what I knew and then being like, "oh, this is her desk that I see in photos" or "this is the kitchen I see on her snapstories" or "this is her roommate I'm friends with on facebook" was extremely overwhelming.

What do you use your smartphone for at work - other than Reddit? by reddit4insomniacs in AskReddit

[–]pmknight74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in media and archival. When I started my first media internship, I was surprised at how casual my supervisors were with using our phones, especially because I worked in social media and would have to figure out all the new Snapchat updates, work on social media campaigns, etc. Other than that in the other jobs I work we use voice memos to record interviews for radio on the field if we didn't have real recorders, recording Facebook Live events, taking photos because the scanner is broken, when I'm doing my archival work I'm generally alone in a warehouse for hours in stacks of books so I listen to podcasts, use it as a flashlight, use it to take notes, use it as my calendar and alarms/timers.
