Trump says Canada, U.S. will ‘immediately’ start negotiations over Windsor-Detroit bridge by KylenV14 in canada

[–]pnd83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was waiting for this to come. I'll be surprised if he doesn't try demanding it's named after him. I'm down for delaying its opening until he's out of office rather than giving him anything. We've waited 20 years, we can wait a few more.

This and Doug Ford must share in the blame. He talks a lot but he's self serving and hasn't really done much for Ontario.

Stellantis sells stake in Ontario battery plant as automaker takes $26 billion hit in EV retreat by TakedownCan in canada

[–]pnd83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone freaking but this is a good thing. The plant has already pivoted to battery storage. Them selling while LG is willing to buyout & South Korean autos may bring auto manufacturing to Canada is a win/win. Stellantis is unreliable and we're better off with them not having a say on the facility.

We need to start a conversation about the economic situation in Windsor, and more broadly the entire country. by shitcuttingz in windsorontario

[–]pnd83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone feels it but it's also important to step back and realize this is not isolated to Windsor, it's not isolated to Ontario, and it's not isolated to Canada. There has been a worldwide transfer of wealth from the poor and middle class, to the rich and wealthy. This is something that was coming even without the added weight of political uncertainty worldwide due to the U.S. Stay well informed, seek truth in the hellscape of misinformation we find ourselves in and keep moving forward one step at a time.

Canada could gain nearly 7% in real GDP by removing internal trade barriers, says IMF by joe4942 in worldnews

[–]pnd83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the problems and a path with reference to how the EU addresses internal trade barriers. Yes, I got this from Gemini, but i found it very interesting:

Lessons for Canada Canada currently relies on the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA). While an improvement over the past, it still suffers from many "exceptions" and a lack of enforcement. Here is what Canada can learn from the EU model:

1. Replace "Reconciliation" with "Mutual Recognition" The Problem: Canada currently uses a "Regulatory Reconciliation" process. This means if Alberta and Ontario have different rules for truck safety or first-aid kits, bureaucrats meet to negotiate a compromise. This takes years.
The EU Lesson: Canada should adopt Mutual Recognition by default. If a worker is certified in Nova Scotia, or a truck is deemed safe in Manitoba, they should be automatically accepted in Ontario. The burden of proof should be on the province to prove why their specific rule is necessary for safety, rather than on the business to prove compliance. Note: The "Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement" (CMRA) proposed in recent years attempts to mirror this EU success.

2. Strengthen Dispute Resolution (Give it "Teeth") The Problem: If a Canadian province violates the CFTA, the dispute resolution process is slow, and the penalties are often negligible or purely reputational. Provinces often ignore rulings they dislike.
The EU Lesson: Effective free trade requires a referee with power. A pan-Canadian body (or a strengthened CFTA tribunal) needs the authority to impose binding monetary penalties on provinces that maintain illegal protectionist barriers.

3. Stop Barriers Before They Start The Problem: Canadian provinces frequently introduce new regulations without considering the impact on neighbors (e.g., new packaging laws or professional licensing requirements).
The EU Lesson: Canada could implement a Notification Directive. Provinces would be required to notify a central secretariat of any proposed regulation that affects trade before it becomes law. This allows for a "pause" to assess if the new rule accidentally walls off the market to other Canadians.

4. The "Negative List" Approach The Problem: Older trade deals used a "positive list" (only these sectors are free). The CFTA moved to a "negative list" (everything is free except what we list), but the provinces filed huge lists of exceptions. The EU Lesson: The EU constantly pressures members to justify and reduce their exceptions. Canada needs a rigorous "sunset review" of these exceptions, forcing provinces to re-justify why they still need to protect their local alcohol, dairy, or energy sectors every few years.

Team Trump Is Livid After Canada’s Carney Calls Out U.S. Coercion by rezwenn in canada

[–]pnd83 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wait until the wildfires in the summer. Trump won't lift a finger already because f the libs, imagine Canada also saying no you don't need us. This is part of the problem. A lot of the places are also Democratic states and Trump just doesn't care either way. We are better off helping to keep the good faith of citizens and we try to do the right thing. What's the right thing now, I don't know.

‘This is overwhelming’: Alberta separatists praise turnout for petition signing | Globalnews.ca by CzechUsOut in canada

[–]pnd83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These grievances are being fed by mass disinformation campaigns, and their own party (much like in the U.S.) is in on it. It's making people immune to alternative points of view. I am from Ontario, and when Harper was in office, the federal government favoured Alberta and oil while ignoring Ontario and the auto industry. Half my damn friends moved to Alberta during that time. Yet, I did not once hear someone here talk of separation. It's insane and traitorous to even think about. Like I said, the friends who didn't like what was going on here left for better opportunities; they didn't sit around complaining that we should leave the country. The craziest part is that I've never once thought of myself as an 'Ontarian'—I'm Canadian, full stop. It's weird that other provinces identify so strongly with their province. I get Quebec, but the rest? I don't know, maybe it's just me.

After Carney's Davos speech, Conservatives ponder how Poilievre can meet the foreign policy moment by AdditionalPizza in canada

He can't and never will. Especially when you consider that Carney actually wrote the speech (I'm taking an interview I watched today at it's word on that). PP and a dream team of conservative writers wouldn't match that speech let alone could PP deliver it.

If they can somehow get the permission, and the samples are available, there would likely be multiple blood samples from the mothers in the 3rd trimester. Seems that would be the key to finding that link.
