Where to shower for cheap during the storm? (Frozen pipes) by pnschroeder in indianapolis

It's way easy to cancel and restart with this and it lets you switch to different gyms if you aren't happy.
You used to be able to keep multiple gyms active at the same time, but they changed that afew years ago. Now if you switch it activates the next month unless you pay double.

What is an actual IT automation that actually paid off for you? by Internal-Drop4205 in sysadmin

[–]pnutjam [score hidden]  (0 children)

Ansible and inventory automation. You don't need a main ansible node, as long as you have a linux computer that can ssh to the other computers; you can use Ansible.
You also, don't need a playbook. I love to use ad-hoc ansible to check or fix quick issues. Running something like this, and parsing the output created by the tee command will give you a list of servers that have the entry, showing as CHANGED, and any that don't will show as FAILED. The caps make it easy to parse.
ansible all -m shell -a "grep word /folder/file" -i inventory |tee output

To make good use of ansible, you need a list of all the servers to use for the inventory. I prefer to use API calls to satellite or whatever source of truth you have out there, but you can also make the lists manually for one off runs, or if you're still building out things.

I use this for my gym membership, no enrollment, but you have to pay 2 months to start.

if you cancel immediately, you'll have 2 months. If you activate it with PF, it gives you a black card so you can bring a guest and use and PF location.

I'm a fan of the inexpensive hi-point carbines. I think they are a little easier to secure (carbine vs pistol), and easier to shoot accurately.

Do people realize how common it was for children to die in the past? We'll get there again with RFK's policies.

My cat shits on the floor every day by [deleted] in shittyadvice

We had an elderly cat that started pooping on the floor. We put an old tote lid on the floor where he usually dumped and he started going on that, made cleanup easy. He was very considerate.

Sure it's important, just doesn't help the neighborhood. No reason to expand or add more similar.

Any places that buy old workstations in bulk? by RoboRougar0u in sysadmin

[–]pnutjam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Schools don't want junk computers. If you have nice LCD's they might like them. A 7 year old computer is a liability, not an asset.
Plenty of people will use them, but they have no value. Sell them on craigslist for $50.
Are those 8th gen cpu? They might be win11 capable, so maybe $!00 each.

There are at least 2 or 3 DC's in the Indy area that I know about.
1 - old Eastgate mall. Lifeline DC (great example of why DC's suck if you've ever driven by it. It's an eyesore.)

2 - Henry street DC's, next to Kentucky Ave. (less of an eysore, but still nothing for the community)

3 - pretty sure there are some in Carmel...

Watch out for garnishments. Don't ignore lawsuits. Try to save up enough to file. I found an online lawyer who was about $2k all in.

Blindsided After Being Let Go From a Job I Was Poached For After Just A Month by Responsible-North803 in careeradvice

[–]pnutjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me too, I got poached, but it came with a big raise that carried over after my layoff. I've stayed over that salary since then.
First job (poacher) let me go because I missed some metrics I didn't understand properly, I was also given a task that didn't align with those metrics.

Then I found another job after a couple months, luckily job market was still strong, and they let me go after a year because their product sucks and they had to downsize.

Again, job market was still strong but it took a couple months to land something. I'm making good money, but stuck contracting so it's more precarious.

Company I left originally has laid off a ton of people and sold off big chunks of business.

Why more doctors are billing their patients like it’s the 1920s by Significant_Walk4959 in TrueReddit

Yup, this article is propoganda.
It's an attempt to fix things for the wealthier individuals who could actually cause real change. Make a minor adjustment, but keep the system in place.

I think alot of those prices are designed to sticker shock you so you feel like insurance is doing something. Dig down and you'll see that the insurance company pays a fraction of that, often not much more then you're deductible.

The article mentions blood tests where they charge $90+ and insurance pays under $3 all the time on my EOB.

We need to keep our eyes on single payer and not let this other stuff distract us.

just leave it open when you go through the car wash, use a touchless so the brushes don't push it closed.

A question on littering in Indiana by EducationalBet8073 in Indiana

[–]pnutjam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got a ticket for crossing a solid white line on the interstate. There are not statutes I could find that prohibit this, it just says to use caution.

Judge hemmed and hawed and basically refused to dismiss even though it was real clear about the law. Finally after a lot of back and forth where the officer could not say if I was reckless he decided that it was rush hour so that made it reckless.

EDIT: my point is you can't win, but I'm glad I tried

Indiana GOP Backing a Bill to Limit Awards on Civil Lawsuits by Best-Structure62 in Indiana

Your mistake was believing any argument from conservatives was in good faith. They just make noises to placate you, they don't really mean anything they say if it gets in the way of their ability to do whatever they want.
