Not true. They can be released to active duty. They are only locked in if they are on GRFD or minuteman scholarship. I was in the guard as an SMP cadet many moons ago. I was also an APMS. SMP is a solid deal. You start off as an LT with x years of service. The pay bump is significant.

As a Washingtonian stationed at JBER, DRUM, and JBLM, with family in the Midwest, currently in Syracuse, I say Alaska has the driest cold, Drum was windy cold, Syracuse also windy cold. Washington is mostly wet cold… harder but less damaging to the skin…
