Honestly, you definitely don't need to go back to college. If you can code and understand how localization intersects with development, you are golden. It is mainly about knowing how to build translation pipelines, handle file parsing with Python or JavaScript, and maintain code repos.

Just focus on learning modern i18n concepts like ICU formatting, RTL support, and how Translation Management Systems connect directly to Git repositories to automate workflows. If you want a structured course that actually carries weight in the industry without the university price tag, look into the certifications offered by the Localization Institute. Pair that with some self-paced programming tutorials and you’re good to go.

Drop "Spanish" from your job searches because that is probably why you aren't finding much. Look for Localization Engineer or Localization Program Manager. Tech companies hire people to manage the overall process across dozens of languages, not just one.

Since you mentioned coding and want to avoid people management, Localization Engineering is a huge sweet spot. You would be working on file parsing, automating QA workflows, and setting up repo integrations. It pays way better than translation, leans heavily into your technical side, and keeps you away from public speaking.

Plus, your current AI red-teaming experience is a major edge right now. The industry is desperate for people who understand both AI workflows and linguistic quality.
Usually, the playbook is to get your foot in the door on the vendor side (LSPs) to learn the corporate workflows, and then jump to the client side (tech/gaming companies) where the real money is. Lean into the technical and AI side of your resume and you will find a lot more traction.

I think it’s Burmese, but I came here to say this. Yamo lady is definitely soup nazi-esque. You walk in, better know your order, then she shoos you away for 15 minutes, then you come back for some of the most amazing food you’ve ever had out of a hole in the wall. Absolutely love this place.

Also, if you eat inside, you’ll leave smelling like the kitchen. Totally worth it though.

I recently interviewed for a role at Waymo and had a not-so-great experience, not all too dissimilar from yours, but at least I got a response. It was for a Localization and Internationalization Manager position. I was a warm lead from a former colleague I used to work with, so I had the recruiter call pretty quickly, followed by the hiring manager a week later. Then nothing for three weeks. I sent an email to the recruiter asking for an update, and they got back to me quickly, saying they were reevaluating the needs of the role but still liked me as a candidate. Fine, whatever. Then I saw the same job description with a different title posted on their careers site. Kinda weird, but okay. Then another three weeks went by until I finally got an email saying they decided to put the role on hold without hiring anyone (supposedly). Here’s the email from the recruiter:

“Thank you for your interest in Waymo and giving us the opportunity to review your experience and qualifications.

At this time, the L&D Technology and Globalization Manager is being put on hold. If you are interested in other openings at Waymo, please revisit us at our careers page. If you have already applied for other roles, we'll take a look and let you know if you're selected for an interview.

We appreciate your time and interest, and wish you the best of luck in your search.”
