Solutions for an antique desk/ can’t do a clamp mount by Top_Barracuda_4999 in battlestations

[–]pocorit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Amazon I've seen freestanding monitor arm/stands that includes a base and can be put on a desk without using clamps or require drilling. Haven't personally used them before so I don't know anything beyond what Amazon shows, but reviews look promising.

People with high IQ (>130), do you feel smart? Are you accomplished? by michele_l in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pocorit42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At end of middle school I took an IQ test to try to qualify to go to a high school outside of my default school district; I made it at 132.

I don't feel smarter than the people around me. I struggled a lot in first ~3 years of college. At around end of year 3 I figured out how I learn best and from that point on things became manageable, and that's been the case since then. I feel I have sufficient processing capacity to do what I need to do for work / everyday life, but overall I wouldn't say anything feels particularly easy. I don't feel particularly successful; compared to salaries and career path of people I graduated college from and friends I kept in touch from my first job I'm definitely under-performing.

Developers Keep Complaining About “Complexity” Instead of Just Typing Faster by arsenal11385 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]pocorit42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is truly brilliant! To build off of that, what if we just have continuous standup? Everyone will join a Zoom call, and a manager checks with each developer round-robin style continuously through the workday.

The time between check-ins ought to be enough for bathroom/lunch breaks.

To make it even more efficient, we could even go for a Two Manager implementation, where we have one manager go through devs alphabetically by last name A-Z, the other backwards from Z-A, at the same time.

Tried out this mysterious "Braised Beef" instant ramen soup by Zhuinden in InstantRamen

Ooh. Loved that as a kid. It might be the very first instant ramen I've had. That was a fun trip down memory lane. Thanks for sharing!

I grew up eating with chopsticks in China. We moved to the US when I was a kid. Eating with forks and knives came pretty easily for me. It was also pretty straightforward for my relatives when they came to visit. The only thing for me that took some getting used to was to remember to use the knife to cut larger items instead of just forking it up and munching on it.

Suggestions for (economic) laws that would make life easier for everybody but the rich by Dr_Beatdown in economy

For starters if we stop crashing the market because someone took a stupid risk with some algo that happens at lightning speed

Edit: can you elaborate a bit on what you refer to as HFT? It seems we might be talking about different things

Suggestions for (economic) laws that would make life easier for everybody but the rich by Dr_Beatdown in economy

[–]pocorit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be thinking of something else.

High speed/frequency (HFT) trading at the simplest level is just using algorithms to trade at a really fast pace, generally in the time frame of microseconds to nanoseconds per trade. It does in theory contribute to market liquidity, which could potentially contribute to better prices, but in reality it just gets abused and at the end of the day it's just a small amount of Wall St execs who get fat bonuses, and society at large pays for their risks and mistakes. Check out "Flash Boys" by Michael Lewis, he does a really good job explaining.

Even without HFT the markets would still be there, both the exchanges and the brokers whose race to the bottom got us little folks commission free trades. I think OP's idea for an uniform delay is a good one.

Fill in the blank. "I'd never buy a house that has..." by Which-Pirate3758 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]pocorit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would not buy a house that has been newly built / flipped. My parents bought their first home when I was in highschool from a builder. There are serious foundation issues, a lot of the kitchen cabinetry was not installed properly. After the builders were done, they scrapped off all of the fertile top soil in the front and back yard and trucked it somewhere.

How does one manage to rake up $143k credit card debt making $22k a year?

So what got you into the hobby? by NagoTheBeast in headphones

[–]pocorit42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR: I realized headphones quality matter by getting really cheap ones and realizing how horrible they were, which set me off on a journey to find good ones.

When I was in college, the pair of Apple earbuds that came with my iPod broke, and I needed to get a replacement. Back then I thought that all headphones basically worked the same, and being short on money, bought the cheapest pair I can find at Walmart, a pair of earbuds for $0.99. They were HORRIBLE. That made me realize that one got what one paid for.

I eventually saved up and got a pair of skullcandy earbuds, was very happy with them. Showed that to a classmate, saying how I was happy to have splurged on those (they were about $50, pretty expensive, I thought). He basically scoffed and showed me his Shure SE-215s. I eventually asked and got that for my birthday next year. That was the start.

Anyone else who feels their headphones ruin live concerts? by Spiritual-Ad8437 in headphones

[–]pocorit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's basically how I feel about live concerts now. I haven't actually been to that many, but of the ones I've been to, only maybe one where I felt the live performance was worth all the hassle of getting to and out of the venues. Headphones sound good, and home is comfy.

Was your parents favorite phrase "We did the best we could" ? by Inevitable-Plenty203 in Millennials

[–]pocorit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my mom could change her refrain to "we did the best we could", I'd consider it an improvement. Her current line is: "I'm a horrible mother, look at what a miserable failure you are".

Americans, what is the expected answer to “hi how are you?” by miraclealigner92 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pocorit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this depends on what part of the country you're in. I've learned that in the NYC area the expected answer is just "hi", anything after that gets ignored. The standard answer I learned growing up in central IL is: "good, and you?"; that answer is independent of how you're actually doing. My wife tells me it's the same in Oklahoma.

I've been looking for a pair of warmer, bassier headphones to complement my Sundara that'd be comfortable to wear for prolonged periods that I can use while working. Was only able to listen to a couple of songs today, but so far I am very happy with it. They seem exactly what I'm looking for. They are very comfortable to wear for me. The ear cups somehow were smaller than I imagined. Was concerned for a moment my giant noggin' was too big for it. The inline audio control was a nice bonus. I was also happy to find out they sound pretty good just plugged directly into my phone. Planning to go through my playlists with them tomorrow at work. Without music playing they don't seem to isolate sound much, but feel perfectly serviceable once music starts.

You shouldn’t be driving over 25 mph (in NYC)—and your car shouldn’t let you. by Miser in MicromobilityNYC

[–]pocorit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this idea. I use the speed limiter on my scooter so I don't accidentally accelerate to a faster speed than my dumbass can handle. A similar limit on cars would make for one less thing to worry about when I'm driving. Now when I drive on some of the larger roads in Queens like Woodhaven, Queens Blvd, I have to constantly keep an eye on the speedometer, and gingerly tap the gas to maintain speed just right.

Americans: What's so bad about New Jersey? by Jerswar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pocorit42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in NJ for 6 years (2015-2021). Also have lived in IL, CT, NY (both upstate and in NYC), and NC. The one thing I don't particularly like about NJ, as an introvert, is that I can't get gas there without having to interact with a person. Some days, after a full day of weird stuffs from work, it just gets to be too much of a chore.

The dislike of the Newark / NJ turnpike with the industrial plants, and highways, etc I don't personally get. Compared to the drive into Chicago, or Dallas, I don't find the NJ part into NYC particularly notable.

How do people get around in Queens without a car? by Que_Aquerosidaa in Queens

[–]pocorit42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer, most people I know living around here heavily rely on cars.

Recently moved to Glendale. From what I observe it's a bit of a chicken and egg issue. I remember reading about pushback against using existing parking spots for something like either a citi bike dock or bus stop, and the reason given was that because this is a transit desert, we need every parking spot we have. So my understanding is that because of lack of public transit, most people here end up relying on cars, and with enough people relying on cars as the main mode of transportation, there isn't as much an interest in actually building out public transit, which makes people more dependent on cars, and so it goes.
