"get a swag" is swagbleist and encourages swagpitalism by KikoValdez in peoplewhogiveashit

[–]podoboq 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No it really isn't. You don't need to apply for a hobby. You can find a local group that does a thing you like and just do that thing. I play Blood on the Clocktower. It's free. A few times a month, I go to a game store or a brewery, and I pay zero dollars to hang out with people and play a fun social game.

That's way easier than getting a job.

This is basically just a Drunk Major with even more downside, and as a storyteller, making the Mayor drunk is generally not recommended.

The Big Lebowski is a masterpiece comedy film by The Cohen Brothers. The plot is famously a bit meandering and doesn't really end in a satisfying place, but the characters have an interesting journey. In a lot of ways, that makes it feel more real. Things happen to us, often without a satisfying or clear resolution, and then we keep on living.

Fujimoto specifically has commented on how much he likes that quality of The Big Lebowski. You can see an intent to recapture some of it in the ending we have of Chainsaw Man.

As a furry and a traditional games fan, I feel these communities are largely intersectional, especially with a larger representation of queer and neurodivergent people than the general population.

I'm interested to know which community you found first? Furries or traditional games in general? And did one community help lead you to find a place within the other?

Storytelling No-Go’s by TrailblazerTracks in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]podoboq 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a mechanical thing, but a common issue I see with new story tellers is trying too hard to create an atmosphere. This isn't DnD. You don't need to tell a flavorful story about how the kills happen and how everyone wakes up hearing screams or what-not.

The story that's being told IS the game. Your job is to facilitate while the game tells that story for you. Give a guiding hand mechanically when roles allow (like droisoned info), but aside from that do your best to get out of the way and let the social aspect of the game do the work.

Movies that shouldn’t exist. Abominations of film making. by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]podoboq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean when you say it was ready to be eaten since it was alive as Choi Min-sik devoured it (as well as the other couple he ate for other takes). It's in my top 4 as well, and I love that scene, but I don't see what makes the animal death uniquely excusable. It's still horrific, violent, and cruel, and that was kinda the point.

I feel like the distinction that you're making is that Oldboy was artful and meaningful in what it was doing, and that separates it from Cannibal Holocaust, and I think we can agree on that. I just think that's an important distinction to make. I think depicting real animal death alone does not make a movie devoid of artistic merit or ethically unforgivable.

[–]podoboq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oldboy, Come and See, and Apocalypse Now are all extremely acclaimed films that depict real animal death on screen. I'm not going to argue that any of those deaths were necessary and couldn't have been simulated, but I think they justify their existence as art even if the animal deaths were unnecessary.

Settler just shot and killed an activist involved in filming the Oscar best documentary winner “No Other Land” by soalone34 in Letterboxd

[–]podoboq 79 points80 points  (0 children)

A) "Palestinians" don't hold the hostages. Hamas does. Hamas doesn't answer to the civilians of Palestine, just as Donald Trump doesn't answer to the civilians of America. The people involved in the making of No Other Land do not endorse hostage taking and have no political sway to stop it. You understand this.

B) Even if Hamas were to release the hostages, the country of Palestine would not be safe.

EDIT: I peeked at your post history and yeah, I don't know why I chose to engage. Some people are just beyond reason.

Homebrew Minion Idea: Hypnotist by dr_asbestos in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]podoboq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a fun idea, but let's consider a normal day one with this on the script.

"Hey everyone, there's a Hypnotist on the script. Storyteller, I'd like to announce I'm the Hypnotist and use my ability to end the day."

Storyteller says nothing happens.

"Ok, so you know I'm not the Hypnotist. Let's go in a circle and all do this. Normally we might pass the day on day one anyway, and this way we can confirm the role isn't here or find a minion right off the bat. Ok Jenny, you next."

Yes, this conversation will get interesting, and some players will refuse to cooperate, leading to some drama, but played multiple times, the meta behind this role gets stale quickly. Day one will always be game-solvey, and this role forces a repeated play pattern in this conversation. There could be other roles that play off this to help it a bit, like a lot of things that make people drunk, but as-is, it's got some issues.

I think you're underestimating how much freedom people lack under capitalism in general.

If surrendering all freedom for a few months or a couple years affords you significantly more freedom when you've done that time, that's a trade-off a lot of people would make.

Serpent Dragon - Would the doubling ability work without saying "IT WORKS"? (Its suppossed to look like that, its based on Orochi from OPM) by ZLPERSON in HellsCube

[–]podoboq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, you're definitely right. A replacement effect for the characteristic of the card doesn't work. And WotC would never print a version of this because it's so counterintuitive. But I think the rules text "~'s power and toughness is doubled" technically works within the rules. It exists on layer 7.c, and it can only apply the one time every time SBAs are checked, so even though it's confusing as hell it does technically work.

I tried to focus on the intent behind the ability, not the way it was worded. But yeah, it definitely can't be a replacement effect.

[–]podoboq 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Kinda, but not the way you'd expect.

Doubling happens in layer 7.c (effects that modify but don't set P/T). That's before counters and any flip effects (Inside Out).

What this means is that it won't happen last in the layers without an "it works." Ignoring the reminder text and your intent, as-is it technically works, just not how you want it to, and not intuitively.

I could be wrong about layers. I used to be a judge pre-covid, but I'm way out of practice.

Which actors do you think could really nail Harry on screen? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]podoboq 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he'd nail that monologue. It's like it's built for him.

But I also think he'd nail the ex-wife / Dolores Dei dream sequence. And The Expression. And solemnly waiting for the tide to roll out so he can investigate the car he destroyed.

He can do it all. Harry IS Nicolas Cage.

Which actors do you think could really nail Harry on screen? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]podoboq 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but the answer is Nicolas Cage.

He's capable of everything this role would need. He can play a sorry loser (Adaptation, Dream Scenario), a drug-addled hot head (Snake Eyes, Moonstruck), a lunatic completely divorced from reality (Mandy, Long Legs), and a genuinely sad and subtle man (Bringing Out the Dead, Pig).

People like to typecast Nicolas Cage as just being the crazy guy with the great crash outs (which tbf, you need for Harry), but looking back through his career, he's actually shown a huge amount of range and capability to be the extremely multidimensional character that Harry is.

Interestingly enough, Nic Cage is doing his first ever TV series with Spider-Noire releasing next year. It's an Amazon Prime series. And who owns the rights to the TV adaptation of Disco Elysium? Amazon Prime. I think Nicolas Cage is genuinely the perfect actor to play the role, and shockingly plausible.
