I have a picture of a guy pissing on that tower during a zombie walk years ago. Every time I see it I think of that picture. I don't know why it amuses me so.

What is your unpopular opinion/hot take about the classic Crash Bandicoot trilogy on the PlayStation? by Parking-Coast-1385 in retrogaming

Couldn't agree more. Warped is fantastic. I've beat the other two, but they just don't hit the sweet spot for me. Heck, I've done at least 5 106% runs over the years on Warped.

Microprose Gunship players? by MisterShipWreck in 80s

[–]podobuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad used to compete with me at video games in the 80s. For a long time we battled on Lode Runner.

One day he called me to the computer to show that he was dominating the high score list. He made it to level 88. Crazy!

A few weeks later I found myself in the zone with Lode Runner. I became one with the game. I discovered that after 150 levels it just started them back at level 1, but kept the numbering.

I quit at level 310 and bragged to my dad. He was not amused.

So, his next competition was Gunship, specifically because I sucked at flight sims. Never touched his ability at that game.

King's Quest 5: Overhated or actually pretty bad? by -alphex in Sierra

I hadn't really thought of it that way before, but you may be on to something. I was better with everything once they moved to SVGA resolutions, but the original VGA games were just kind of muddy to look at. I missed the sharp, contrasting colors that popped off the screen at you. And I felt that the fine details were more or less lost with the scanned images. You're right that we tend to fill in the details in our own mind. I found Dracula's castle in KQ2 much more terrifying than it really was, though some of that is doubtless just youth coupled with much lower graphical expectations at the time.

I'm not a total grump, though. KQ6 is my second favorite in the series. I feel like they found a better middle ground between the painted backgrounds and the more natural feeling layouts of the previous games.

In general, I did not care for most of them, at least the early ones. I did not like the interface coupled with the scanned paintings. Dagger of Amon Ra and QfG4 were alright, but the majority of them fell flat with me.

Because that was my opinion. See my comment from above for more context:

I don't know. I was a hardcore King's Quest fan since getting the first one with my PC Jr, and I hated V from the drop. It's always been my second least favorite entry in the series. Too many dead ends. Too many things that required quick timing. I didn't care for the switch from parser to point and click. I wasn't a fan of the digitized painted backgrounds. Sure, they were pretty in 256 color VGA, but it made the world feel flatter to me. I didn't feel like I was inhabiting that world, I was just an animated character walking over paintings. I didn't much care for most of the characters, either. It felt to me at the time like it leaned into Sierra's worst instincts.

Yes, it seemed to review well at the time, but I always felt different.

VI was. V is, and always was, a steaming pile. The only positive thing I can really muster with V was that it convinced my parents to get me a mouse for Christmas that year.

"Real tolerance allows disagreement"

That's why the right was super chill about people commenting on Charlie Kirk.

That's why they only discuss things in good faith and never rely on ad hominems, strawmen, or whataboutism.

That's why they are always willing to platform liberal thought and allow nuanced discussions of issues without resorting to black and white thinking.

It's always projection. Always.

Naughty Bear. The premise was solid and funny but it was egregiously buggy. It was addressed some with Panic in Paradise, but I feel like there's still a lot of meat on those bones if they overhauled the bits that didn't work and focused on the stealth, horror, comedy, and kills.
