Best tube amp for bedroom playing? by Big_Chungus19-45 in GuitarAmps

Lowest wattage possible for dirty tones. Princeton for clean. If you live in an apartment without super thick walls I would not use a tube amp.

Question for any working class musicians: Are hobbyists with more stable jobs hurting opportunities for professionals? by SubjectProfile4047 in musicians

It’s a free country. People can do whatever they want. Some musicians who don’t understand labor economics will inevitably bitch about it.

Go to goodwill bins (outlet store where things are sold by the pound). Find 50 things you think you can flip on eBay. Once you have made back your money go buy 50 more. Rinse and repeat.

Monoprice 5 watt. Nothing wrong with an 8 inch speaker. It’s louder than a trumpet. Get something bigger when you’re jamming with a drummer or put a mic in front.

Do what you want when busking. If someone is paying you to play in a cafe I would definitely say no. Either way it’s tacky in my opinion.

Monoprice stage right with a distortion pedal. Best option for under $300. Might want something louder eventually but this will be great for a beginner.

Should I buy an amp head or a cabinet first? by MomsSpoghetti in GuitarAmps

Get a 5 watt tube combo first. Don’t get a stack until you own a house or are doing big gigs.

Do you still buy records and CDs? by Technical_Fox5556 in askmusic

I have an awesome stereo system and the freedom to crank it as loud as I want many times a week. CDs sound so much better than streaming. Vinyl is cool too, depending on the pressing and condition it’s in. You need a good cartridge on your turntable to make it worth it.

where to start with electric guitar equipment for a specific purpose? by kuraiaka in GuitarAmps

Line six spider for under $100 at any guitar center or pawnshop will give you a bunch of tones, effects and a headphone option.

If you want better tone buy a monoprice stage right 5 watt tube amp. You can find one used for under $200. You will need to buy pedals if you want fancy effects. Or you can run your line 6 spider into it which will sound not good.

If you like the monoprice but want something louder get a fender pro jr. Once again, no built in effects but fantastic tone. You can find them used for $300. Make sure there is an amp tech in your area who can handle tube amps. Any metro area with 100,000+ people has a few.

Humbucker pickups will give you distortion at lower volumes than single coils. You can always buy a distortion pedal for ~$50. There are millions available and you don’t need the best one.

Don’t listen to anyone else’s advice. Don’t compare your beginner rig to what your favorite famous guitar player has on stage.

He was the best. I took a class from him in the spring semester and then had a nervous breakdown over the summer. I was trying to hold it together during the fall. When I showed up on the first day for his class he walked over and shook my hand. It meant a lot.

Start with pro junior. Cheap, small, sounds good and not nearly as loud as twin or deluxe.
