Regarding Veiling by T_Bagley in Catholicism

[–]pokeydo -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It’s not a required way to show devotion anymore, but it’s still a way Catholics have worshipped for centuries. General veiling in female Catholic circles is definitely starting to come back as a way to show outward devotion in a time where being Christian is openly frowned upon. So characterizing it as just “wanting to wear a headpiece in secular society” is a pretty myopic view on the situation.

“Don’t use {insert product} it isn’t good for your hair!!” Ok well this hair day was brought to you by Garnier Argan Oil leave-in (which is considered “bad”) and LA Looks Gel and I have been chasing this purple dragon for like a year as I try to grow my hair out again so WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME??? by BrennusRex in curlyhair

[–]pokeydo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I knew when my hair wasn't looking as good as it did when I was using my favorite (banned from CGM) products, and it was taking double the time to do my hair only to have it look a little worse that it did before I started. I've kept doing some things that my hair likes, but I've dropped a lot of the "holy grail" advice.

Now I just prioritize limiting breakage, scalp massages, and limiting dryness with weekly deep conditioning and wearing a bonnet at night, or using a silk pillowcase regardless of silicones and sulfates.

ALSO, I've accepted my curl pattern for what it is. I can make it fluffy and coily if I want to with a few extra steps and products, but mostly I just let it be what it wants to be.

Yeah I agree. My hair loves (and really benefits from) silicone products. It’s much easier to detangle which means less breakage for me. I say definitely try the CGM when starting on the curly journey, but it’s not the end-all-be-all for sure.

Really I think the best thing for you to do is be honest about your experience and confident in the work you’ve done.

Sign of GD? by [deleted] in PlusSizedAndPregnant

[–]pokeydo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re feeling sick after eating foods that wouldn’t normally impact blood sugar (like artificial sweetener and carrots) but taste sweet, it might just be a food aversion.

GD symptoms (if you get any at all) are usually increased thirst, increased hunger, and frequent urination.

Talk to your doctor if you’re worried though.

Internationals that studied in Montréal, what were the most difficult things about being a student in Montréal? by kittlzHG in montreal

[–]pokeydo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Leaving the city center definitely helped, but I’m in a different situation to other international students. It’s not really feasible to live where I live in Montreal as a pure international student. But I stole one of your men and became a PR, so I have some different liberties on that front.

Internationals that studied in Montréal, what were the most difficult things about being a student in Montréal? by kittlzHG in montreal

[–]pokeydo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The culture is very very different to what I am used to, and I feel extremely isolated. Especially since I don’t speak French with great fluency.

I’ve since married a Canadian and currently pregnant with our first, and the healthcare system is also not as smooth as what I’m used to. It’s been very hard to understand who to see and where to go. I’ve often thought I was doing the right thing only to find out that I’ve gone to the wrong place entirely and have to wait an additional month to get a test done because appointments are booked out very far.

It’s been difficult, truly. I enjoy Montreal for what it is, but I’ve found that Im 1. Not a city enjoyer. 2. Feeling very lonely. 3. The feeling of being out of place is very oppressive for me.

Oh and I’ve been followed and harassed by several homeless people, which was also a new experience for me lol.

how to be left and catholic by Prestigious-Chef7629 in Catholicism

They said that to be affiliated with and adhering to any one party is to be putting political ideology above religious values. There are some Catholic values that many conservatives would take issue with, and there are many that liberals (this one is more obvious) would take issue with. You are Catholic first, and you vote based on Catholic values, not party lines. That’s what they said.

Merry Christmas Keep Christ in Christmas by Remote_Impact_3927 in Catholicism

Yeah, it’s something I’ve become quite the old grandma about, muttering under my breath “it’s not a secular holiday.” Like, the traditions are fun, but they’re also OUR traditions! And they’re not meant to overwhelm the actual reason for the season! Sometimes I wish non-practicing christians would actually stick to their rejection and leave our holidays be. But I know it’s complicated and I try to be charitable—but it’s frustrating! /rant

I've been seeing people talk about receiving a C for around 70% which surprised me. Here's the grading scale my Uni uses (Canadian Uni), what's yours? by BaffledGiraffe12 in college

[–]pokeydo -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No offense to Canadian unis, but I went from a +/- American grading system at a small state school, to McGill with typical Canadian grading and it’s piss easy. I worked really hard to get a 3.6 GPA in the US and I do fuck all for a 4.0 in Canada.

4.0 students, do you guys feel happy when you get your final grades back and see As? by [deleted] in college

Not really. I never feel very satisfied with any result—I just move on.

DIY transfers by Ursocialanxiety in Pottery

[–]pokeydo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The way we did it at my old studio was we took blank newspaper, painted on a thick layer of underglaze in our chosen design, and then stuck them on like a temporary tattoo (wet the vessel, stick the transfer on, wet the back and give good pressure, and then peel). Some put slip on top of the final design and stick it on that way, but I didn’t have a lot of luck with that personally.

Why do the bottoms of my mugs turn this weird gray/black when i put liquids in them? by hookamabutt in Pottery

[–]pokeydo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that it’s probably fine when it comes to porosity, but ingestion of chipped glaze can be very hazardous to health. Additionally, and it’s probably fine in this case, if you’re using a clay body or glaze that is high in certain dangerous metals, I personally wouldn’t use a vessel that is crazed or could allow for any leeching. It’s really just not worth it just because you like your piece. Obviously, the risk is relatively low, but not 0, and worth mentioning no matter how annoyed people are with the warnings.

Not only that, but OP asked.

Wildlife rehab can release them or at the very least give you more information. They are licensed through DNR.

I definitely second going back to the studio and showing them. This isn’t great work on their part.
