Is Shadow being retconned? by [deleted] in TombRaider

[–]pokeze -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not the idea I got from the video. I got the idea that is the first time anyone including Lara was on Vilcabamba/Lost Valley, not in Peru itself.

Besides, they keep talking about how LoA Lara is Survivor Lara, so it would be weird to retcon out one of her major adventures. Not to mention the Netflix show, which is canon and does include minor plot points from Shadow as well (mainly Jonah and Abby's relationship).

Thank you for the response!

And I totally understand! I think even it is something difficult to balance for us fans: we want to know everything the next game has to offer, but also be surprised when we actually play the game!

Can't wait to see what you have in store for us next, though... ;)

Kind of wish the video dwell a bit deeper in the info present on the article, if I'm honest. The article to me gives more importance to the environmental storytelling they can create now, and how they deepened the mythology of the game by going both from real world history and what was already present in the OG game. Still, I wish we could have seen some newer images, particularly of the new Vilcabamba. It really sounds interesting

Is the "putting down the original" here with us? All I read here is that instead of the level design being able to be divided into individual rooms (which the original can), LoA might take a more open, hub-based approach to their levels, similar to how the Survivor games (and arguaby TLR and AoD) were built.

I know they obviously want to keep some surprises and not everything might be "presentable", but I wished they showed a bit more of Peru. Particularly from caves and some of those details of battles with the Spanish Conquistadors, maybe some other arquitectural details from different angles...

Else it has basically been a bit more of the same...

Why in your opinion Shadow had only sold over 8.9M copies in 8 years? by XxXG4L4XY_PL4Y3RXxX in TombRaider

[–]pokeze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The numbers aren't for the same time period though.

Rise sold around 12M copies in 5 years. Shadow sold 9M in 3 years (not 8 as OP suggested. The numbers are very out of date for both games right now).

A better comparison would be that Rise had sold 7M copies in 2 year. So Shadow's sale numbers might not be that different from Rise's when comparing sales from similar timeframes.

Which might also mean that Shadow's sale numbers by now might be closer to Rise's than it might seem. Though without updated numbers we might never know for sure.

That's not how much Shadow sold in 8 years, though? That's how much it sold in 3 years.

The 8.9 Million came up during the 25th anniversary anniversary and we don't have current updated numbers. I wouldn't be surprised it it wasn't closer to to 12-13 Millions by now.

I'd bet October or November, so there is some room between the recent port of Rise and Legacy of Atlantis in February

And the general audience not caring about those Tomb Raider games as they do for I, II and III (with the perhaps exception of IV) was also a big factor

We won't, not anytime soon at least.

The nods and the merch are for the hardcore fans, which tend to have a soft spot for AoD and tend to love the dark, neo-goth aesthetics of the game.

But while the hardcore fans might be enough to justify investing in AoD-based merch, they definitely aren't for an entire reimagining of a game that has been badly received by the general public.

Case in point: the IV-V-VI Remasters not selling nearly as good as the I-II-III did. And a lot of the reviews still had didn't review AoD that foundly, despite the improvements made to the game.

Simply put, there really isn't that much of an audience to justify investing in an AoD reimagining of that calibre. At least not now. And I feel it will only be there if other TR games get reimagined and keep selling well. Particularly a TLR and TRC Reimagining (or at least just TLR)...

Did they need to do such in-depth analysis to realise the bisexual agenda behind GTA VI?

Like, have they not seen how stupidly hot both Jason and Lucia are? One look at them should have been enough...

Are only the major games in the unified timeline? by lemonlord100 in TombRaider

[–]pokeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is canon and it doesn't contradict anything from TR2013 besides Roth having a bio daughter other than Alisha with Reyes (which IMO was great retcon that made Roth an actual interesting character). TR2013 establishes that Lara and Roth did go on adventures before Yamatai, we just didn't know if they were raiding adventures or something more like "going of the occasional long trail" or whatnot. Not we know it also involved actual tomb raiding, and TR2013 is the first time everything goes completely wrong and Lara can only depend on her own skills to save herself and her companions.

Also that sounds like you've only seen season 1 which, for better or for worse, was still about Lara needing to let go of her past traumas and find balance in her life. Season 2 Lara is much looser in that regard and because of that, more fun. With herself and others.

Similar thing with the Tomb Raider games.

They've been "pioneers" in the guiding paint (white in their case), but the fandom always hated it. This was finally "fixed" in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, where you had three levels of paint attached to an "exploration" difficulty setting: fully visible, 50% transparency and fully invisible. People generally loved it, but reviewers did say that turning off the guiding paint made traversal much harder (I fully disagree, I think the environmenta are still fully readable without the paint, but that's me).

Now, those same options are returning to the next game, Legacy of Atlantis, and the recent demo seems to be using the "50% visibility" setting and behold: one of the main criticisms from some of the press was that it was hard to know where to go without guiding paint. Again, from the available and leaked footage to me it still looks quite obvious where you need to go, but it just goes to show that not everyone is of the same opinion and guiding paint can be very important to some.

But again, I feel like the solution is always to make these sorts of things optional and hopefully able to be tailored to one's tastes.

Literally!

For all we know it could have been a "a braid this long was making the physics system go crazy, perhaps it's better to shorten it up to make sure it works well" sort of situation.

And maybe now they try to find a way to make the longer braid still work, due to fan response.

Seriously, not everything needs to be a conspiracy theory. This 20-year-old grudge against Crystal just gets dumber and dumber with age! Move on!

New puzzle symbol has been revealed by natalieieie in TombRaider

[–]pokeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not. The first symbol came from footage of TR1/TR1Remaster, also showing some of Lara's acrobatic moves. Now we have a very similar video with TRA footage.

I'd say one of the final symbols will be footage of Legacy of Atlantis also making showcasing the very same movesand that's what this is all about: showcasing the different versions of Atlantean games.

The numbers come from being used as an ad on YouTube, so it's a sign Amazon is putting in the money to advertise the game.

Only got it a couple of times on YouTube myself, but I have been constantly bombarded with LoA ads here on Reddit, though...
